CHANCELLOR2011 Mocs Footballroger brownchancellorDr. Roger G. Brown, a proven academicleader and native Tennessean, is the fifteenthhead of The <strong>University</strong> of Tennessee atChattanooga. His appointment as Chancellorwas celebrated by the campus in Februaryof 2006.Under Brown’s leadership, the campus hasexperienced record enrollment growth at alllevels, reaching the significant milestone ofsurpassing more than 10,000 students infall 2009. Since taking the helm of the Chattanoogacampus, he has promoted <strong>UTC</strong>’smission as a metropolitan university withspecial emphasis in the fields of science,mathematics and technology. Brown has alsopledged the campus’ commitment to teacherpreparation, healthcare professions, businessand commerce and cultural appreciation.<strong>UTC</strong> recently completed a strategic planninginitiative that focuses campus efforts on thepower of partnerships, especially relationshipswithin the learning laboratory of Chattanooga.In 2008, Chattanooga earned theCommunity Engagement designation by theCarnegie Foundation for the Advancement ofTeaching in recognition of its many successfulpartnerships in the community.Brown came to Chattanooga from the Uni-versity of North Carolina at Pembroke, wherehe served as Provost and Vice Chancellor forAcademic Affairs since 2000. Previously, hehad served since 1991 in various academicand administrative capacities with the <strong>University</strong>of North Carolina at Charlotte. Brownleft Charlotte in 2000 as Senior AssociateProvost and Associate Vice Chancellor forAcademic Affairs.A political scientist with particular academicemphasis in American government, Brownearned bachelor’s and master’s degrees inPolitical Science from the <strong>University</strong> of Tennesseeand the Ph.D. in Political Science fromThe Johns Hopkins <strong>University</strong>. He beganhis teaching career at Iowa State <strong>University</strong>in 1983 before joining the Charlotte facultyin 1985.In 2002, Brown was appointed to theinaugural delegation of the AmericanAssociation of State Colleges andUniversities Sino-American LeadershipDevelopment Training for HigherEducation Leaders in China. He hastraveled on assignment for the U.S.Department of State to Syria, Jordan,and Israel. He also helped establishinternational exchanges with universitiesin Germany, France, South Korea,and South Africa.In Chattanooga, Brown is a member ofRotary International and has also beennamed to the United Way of GreaterChattanooga Board of Directors, theRiverCity Company Board and theChattanooga Area Chamber of CommerceBoard of Directors. He is a commissionerof the Southern Associationof Colleges and Schools and has beenappointed to the Southeast TennesseePreK-16 Education Council.A strong supporter of athletics, Dr.Brown is the Chair of the Southern ConferenceCouncil of Presidents. This appointmentruns through the 2011-12 academic year.Brown’s wife and partner, Dr. Carolyn Thompson,is also a committed community activist.In addition to her involvement and supportof the university, she currently serves onthe boards of the Community Foundation ofGreater Chattanooga, Memorial HealthcareSystem, Jordan Thomas Foundation, CommunityImpact and Women’s Fund of GreaterChattanooga.The couple has two children, Caroline andAustin.
