<strong>All</strong> <strong>Geared</strong> <strong>Up</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Westward</strong> <strong>Expansion</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Westwood</strong> <strong>Elementary</strong><strong>Westwood</strong> <strong>Elementary</strong> 5th graders are learning about how the west was settled in theirWestern <strong>Expansion</strong> Unit. They are learning about transcontinental railroad constructionand travel, homesteaders, ranchers and c<strong>at</strong>tle drives, miners, and N<strong>at</strong>ive Americans.Students celebr<strong>at</strong>ed this unit with a Western Day in which students were encouraged towear items used in the west, and research the item's function. For example, one studentreported th<strong>at</strong> "Bandannas were worn around their necks to cover their noses and mouthsto protect them from bre<strong>at</strong>hing in dust and dirt, and un<strong>for</strong>tun<strong>at</strong>ely sometimes to disguisetheir identity when making poor choices, such as train robbing or stealing c<strong>at</strong>tle."Photo 1: Cowboys and Cowgirls of the <strong>Westwood</strong> Range
