Welcome AddressWelcome to Wiesbaden and the 17 th International Vascular Biology Meeting! It is with great pleasure that we would like to welcome you all to the 17th International VascularBiology Meeting 2012 (IVBM 2012), the largest meeting of its kind, and to the congress venue inWiesbaden, the capital of the state of Hessen in Germany. Together with our friends and colleaguesfrom the Local Organizing Committee and the International Advisory Board, we hope thatyou will enjoy your stay in Wiesbaden and look forward to a scientifically challenging and sociallyenjoyable meeting. Many thanks to all of you who actively contributed to shaping the scientific program of the meeting. You all have made a major contribution to the now 32-year-old success story of the IVBM:The program covers all aspects of contemporary vascular biology research including the mostrecent developments in technology development and therapeutic translation. As such, IVBM 2012aims at cross-fertilizing the basic and translational branches of vascular biology and medicineas well as demonstrating the latest developments in laboratory methods that are necessary tomove the field forward. The core program of plenary and theme-orientated concurrent sessionswith more than 90 invited speakers will be complemented by a significant number of oral presentationsselected from submitted abstracts. Ample time and space has also been allocated forposter presentations and discussions; all posters will be on display for the duration of the meeting. It is an honor for the Organizing Committee to play host to so many distinguished speakers fromEurope and further afield. The Local Organizing Committee together with the Congress Managementhave combined their efforts to make your stay in Wiesbaden exciting, pleasant and comfortable. We sincerely hope that you will find the time to enjoy the social events including theWelcome Reception in the "Rhein-Main-Hallen" Congress Centre on Saturday evening, June 2,and that you will also be able to join us at the Congress Party at “Jagdschloss Platte” on Mondaynight, June 4, 2012.IVBM 2012 highlights include:ü 8 plenary sessions with outstanding speakersü 30 concurrent symposia with leaders in the field and young scientists´ presentationsü Poster presentations throughout the meetingü Daily meet-the-expert sessionsü An informal job fairü Best abstract and poster awardsü Exhibits by our industry partnersThe success of a meeting primarily depends on the high quality of the scientific contributionsand the enthusiasm of the speakers. We would therefore like to thank in advance all authors ofsubmitted abstracts, speakers, chairs and moderators for helping to make what we anticipatewill be a most successful and memorable congress, the IVBM 2012. Moreover, we would like toexpress our sincere thanks to the many financial contributors who have made this meeting possible.Above all, generous support was provided by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. All4

Welcome Addressmembers of the Local Organizing Committee also made substantial financial contributions forwhich we are particularly thankful. Our corporate partners and sponsors were extremely loyalto the field of vascular biology, and their support is gratefully acknowledged. We are confident that this meeting will be an intense learning expedition for all participants. Wesincerely hope that it will provoke and stimulate discussions, challenge old dogmas, ignite newideas, raise the bar of scientific excellence, and continue to foster scientific collaborations whichwill advance our common goal: The passion and love for the field of vascular biology research.Make sure that you get the very best out of four intense days of science in Wiesbaden:Keep your thoughts and blood in flow. The IVBM 2012 ChairsProf. Klaus T.
