ANAESTHETIC SUPPORT NURSE (CNM 2)JOB TITLE:ACCOUNTABLE TO:Anaesthetic Support NurseDirector of Midwifery/Nursing.REPORTING / RESPONSIBILITY RELATIONSHIPS:• Reports to CMM3 in Theatre or the Assistant Directorof Midwifery and Nursing on duty• Liaise with Clinical Area Managers in relation topatient needs and assessment• Liaise with the Clinical Director of Anaesthesia andother Consultant staff as necessaryThe Anaesthetic Support Nurse is based in the Operating Department. The post holder will lead inthe development of nursing practice in the area of Anesthetics. It is envisaged that this role willdevelop into that of a Clinical Nurse Specialist.ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS1. To be registered in the General, Division of the Register of Nurses kept by Bord Altranais agusCnáimhseachais na hÉireann or to be entitled to be so registered.2. Five years post registration experience.3. Two years experience in Operating Theatre / Anaesthetic Room / Recovery Room.4. Have a Higher Diploma in relevant Nursing Studies or be willing to undertake such study within atwo year period.


RESPONSIBILITIESThe Anaesthetic Support Nurse will have responsibilities in the following areas:CLINICAL• Lead in the development of pain management service.• Have responsibility for a defined caseload within the pain management service.• Demonstrate vision, innovation and flexibility in anaesthetic nursing practice and postoperativepain management.• Demonstrate leadership ability and good communication skills.• Work as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team to meet the needs of patients inimplementing the anaesthetic and pain control service.• Co-ordinate referral of women attending the Anaesthetic Clinic.• Work with the Anaesthetic Consultants / Anaesthetic Team.• Provide specialist knowledge, expertise and care for the anaesthetised patient.• Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the needs of women undergoing surgery.• Be aware of “best practice”, recent research and new developments in anaesthetic servicesand pain control.• Develop knowledge of equipment used in anaesthesia and pain management, and evaluatethe effectiveness/efficiency of new equipment.• Monitor, audit and evaluate ongoing practice and outcomes in anaesthetic nursing practices.• Provide support and advice to women pre and post surgery.• Contribute to the development of hospital policies and procedures, and collaborate withother healthcare professionals to ensure that these are observed.• Promote a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.• Be aware of and implement all Policies, Guidelines in relation to Infection Prevention andControl / Decontamination.• Liaise with and assist the Resuscitation Officer with the co-ordination and implementation ofthe Basic Life Support Programme for all staff in the hospital.• Actively contribute, participate and ensure compliance with the key areas identified in thefollowing:o Infection Prevention and Control / Decontaminationo National Quality / Hygiene Schemeso B.F.H.I.RESEARCH• Implement changes in practice to reflect best practice as determined by research/audit.• Identify areas within the speciality relevant to nursing practice that would benefit fromresearch.• Develop audit/ research methodologies to use and obtain service users opinions, needs andexpectations in relation to anaesthetic and pain management services.• Participate in and assist with all other audits deemed necessary by the <strong>Rotunda</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>Management Team.• Membership and participation in appropriate courses, conferences and professionalorganisations.


EDUCATION• Use models of adult education that are enabling and facilitating.• Advise on in-service education and professional growth opportunities for staff, pertinent tothe area.• Have an active teaching role for postgraduate students and other disciplines as required.• Lead in the development and management of in house CPR training.• Use relevant educational opportunities to maintain the highest standards and up-to-datecare offered to the patient.PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT• In consultation with the Head of the Clinical Team and Director of Midwifery & Nursing agreelearning objectives designated to meet <strong>personal</strong> and professional development goal.• Take steps to pursue professional development objectives in accordance with Bord Altranaisagus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann policy.NOTE:This job description is subject to periodic review in the light of changing circumstances andmay include other duties and responsibilities as may be determined by the Director ofMidwifery/Nursing.
