Her days with are fi lled with visits from family and friends, cooking her favorite Hispanic food and reading biographies and the Bible.Wilfred Roberts, 93, Amesbury, MA ~ Wilfred, a widower, lives in Amesbury is the last of twelve siblings who continues to enjoy his lifelong hobbies of woodworkingand cooking. He shares both with family and friends.Somouen Som,61, Lowell, MA ~ A Cambodian woman, a survivor of breast cancer and a dialysis patient visits her husband, a stroke victim, at a nursing facilitybecause her health prevents her from caring for him at home.Mary Teague, 89, Lowell, MA ~ Mary lives and raised her family in the same neighborhood she still calls home today. A public school teacher for 15 years, shewent on to teach English and Citizenship at International Institute. With a genuine interest in the world, she traveled extensively visiting the Holy Land and becameinterested in biblical archeology.

Chronic medical conditions,limited income, confusing and complexinsurance options, and rising health care costscompound the issue for the American public.Elder Services chose Health Care Equality as afocus for our annual report and our annual meeting.How is justice served when an individual cannot pay for the medicinethey need, or simply find a ride to medical appointments? If elders ordisabled adults are placed in a nursing home – when their fi rst choice maybe to stay at home – why are the services they need under-funded or beyondtheir means? These are long-standing concerns which are only intensified bythe current economic crisis we all face.We believe for health care equality to be realized, constant advocacyand dedication to the cause are required of everyone. All of us together - asexperts in the fields of aging, health, medicine and a host of other disciplines- are witnesses to examples of health care inequality that elders, disabledadults and poor of all ages sometimes experience. Our collective reflectionand perspective, after 35 years of service, expand on the belief that equitablehealth care is not just about good medical practice. It is the engagementof every health care and non-health care provider to advocate and to takeresponsibility for improving access to health care for every person in oursociety.Rosanne DiStefanoExecutive DirectorOur efforts at Elder Services to improve healthcare equality envelopes a broad range of innovativeprograms, advocacy efforts and partnershipsthat help empower elders and families to findtheir voice and their choice in getting the helpthey need. SHINE Program counselors guidethousands of elders though the maze of healthcare benefits and programs to select one that isright for them. Every day our home care casemanagers and nurses address the service needsof more than 5,000 elders with challenges relatedto ill health and limited support. We are workingwith Senior Care Organizations to provide comprehensivecommunity services to elders enrolled in MassHealth, includingthose at risk of nursing home placement. Our Chronic Disease ManagementProgram is a statewide model of empowerment and self-management formany who live with pain and chronic disease.And finally, Elder Services has been selected to be one of three pilot sitesto implement Long Term Care Community Options Counseling, a partnershipwith The Northeast Independent Living Program to provide assessments,intervention and referrals to elders and disabled adults of all ages currentlyresiding in nursing homes – but whose greatest desire is to return to their owncommunities.Together we have made much progress. However, barriers to good healthcare continue to challenge all populations and this requires the commitmentof everyone to do their part. Using our knowledge to improve the lives ofMary ~ 89 Enhanced Supportive Homemaker ProgramThis program expands the existing SupportiveHomemaker program by providing additionalclinical training and supervision to supportivehomemakers. Elder Services provides monthlyclinical in-services focused on helping clients whohave mental health issues. Additional trainingtopics include: hoarding, mood disorders, settinglimits, depression and suicide, habilitation therapy,family dynamics, counter transference and burnout.Because of the complexities of clients inrecent years, in-services will be more in-depth.Clinical Internship ProgramOur clinical internship program includes aMasters Program in social work, mental healthcounseling and clinical psychology. Interns areinvolved with clinical initiatives including ourHoarding Outreach Program and the provisionof in-home mental health counseling. This newinitiative allows our staff to provide needed mentalhealth services to alienated and isolated elders.Students provide weekly therapy to elders with awide array of issues including depression, griefand loss, substance abuse, and compulsive hoarding.The goal is to get isolated elders entered intothe mainstream mental health system. Our currentaffiliations ~ Salem State College, Simmons, MassSchool of Professional Psychology, Universityof New Hampshire, Rivier College, BridgewaterState College and UMASS Boston. Elder Housing InitiativesConstruction has been underway at WestfordVillage at Mystery Spring in Westford tobuild 36 units for low-income elders to move inby March, 2009. Elder Services secured over $6million in funding from the US Department ofHousing and Urban Development and another $1million in state funding. An application was alsosubmitted in July to build another 35 units of elderhousing in the town of Tewksbury.In collaboration with Emmaus in Haverhill, weprovide the service coordination at Murray Court,a 20 unit SRO under construction that will providepermanent housing for homeless elders.My Life My HealthMy Life, My Health, our Chronic DiseaseSelf-Management Program, has positivelyimpacted the lives of more than 500 older adultsin Massachusetts who live with persistent healthconditions. Some of the success stories have beenprofound. At the end of the workshop, one woman,who had isolated herself due to extreme anxiety,purchased a plane ticket to visit her daughter shehad not seen in years.Our successful Master Trainer Trainings, lendMassachusetts 135 Lay Leaders who can offer theprogram in English, Spanish, Chinese and Khmer.New components - My Life, My Health is nowoffered to individuals with severe and persistentmental illness. And, the Administration on Aging,Centers for Disease Control and Centers for Medicare/MedicaidServices selected four states to trya modified version of the program. Elder Serviceswas chosen as the pilot site for Massachusetts. Wewill partnerwith GreaterLawrenceFamilyHealthCenter andHome HealthVNA.Amparo ~ 89

elders in all aspects of agingMoney Management ProgramMoney Management has evolved into a multifacetedprogram with over 61 volunteersserving 90 clients with basic bill paying, checkbookbalancing and budgeting. Our Rep Payeeprogram serves 25 clients, with five waiting forapproval from Social Security.Our staff presents professional programs onfinancial literacy to the community, including howto recognize scams and financial exploitation. TheMoney Management program was presented at theNASUA convention in Boston and the MerrimackValley Financial Crime Network. It reinforcesthe collaboration between these two agencies andhelps protective service workers who investigatefinancial exploitation cases.Elder Services also helped over 100 elderscomplete the necessary paperwork to receive theirEconomic Stimulus check. Wilfred ~ 93The Hoarding ProgramThe Hoarding Outreach Program, originallyimplemented in Lowell and Lawrence, hasexpanded to other communities across the MerrimackValley.Over 50 elders were referred by emergencypersonnel, housing managers and family members,with 35 screened to participate. Elder Serviceshelped these elders to manage the clutter in theirhomes – sorting, organizing and discarding toachieve a safer environment. The program alsohelps elders understand why they save so muchand it provides a caring, therapeutic relationship,which allows them to let go of the barriers holdingthem back.The program, Personal Space, CommunityRisk, was presented at annual conferences whichincluded, the Massachusetts Council on Aging, theMassachusetts Aging and Mental Health Coalition,and the Scientific Conference of the GerontologicalSociety of America. Also presented at theNational Association of Area Agencies on Aging,it received an Aging Innovation Award. Elder Brown Bag ProgramThe Elder Brown Bag Program, in collaborationwith the Greater Boston Food Bank, serves1,100 low-income elders across the MerrimackValley. It continues to be the largest Brown Bagprogram in the state and now operates from twodistribution sites each month. In Haverhill the siteis Pentucket Lake School and in Lawrence, it is atthe former Lawrence High School, in partnershipwith the Lawrence Council on Aging.Hilda ~ 89 20th Annual Alzheimer’s ConferenceIn collaboration with the Merrimack ValleyAlzheimer’s Partnership, the 20th, and to date,the largest conference ever, drew more than 265caregivers, family members and professionalsfrom the Merrimack Valley, So. New Hampshireand Connecticut.Experts from the legal, medical and behavioralfields expanded on this year’s theme - 20 Years ofSharing Hope, Support and Solutions. Many ofthe caregivers who attended provide 24/7 care toloved ones with Alzheimer’s or similar dementia.This being the largest audience in the historyof the conference is a clear indicator that there isa crucial need to continue providing up-to-dateand topical information for family caregivers whoconstantly struggle with all issues related tocaregiving.

Campbell Award‘vision, leadership, service’Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley was pleasedto present Jeanine Murphy, Executive Director ofEmmaus, with the 2007 James L. Campbell Awardfor Vision, Leadership and Service. It is named after anagency founder, an advocate dedicated to helping improvethe lives of older people.Since 1988, when Jeanine became Executive Director,Emmaus has grown from a small shelter to a significantservice provider and developer of affordable housing, offeringone of the most innovative and comprehensive approachesto homelessness in the country. Her vision is notonly to provide shelter, but to address the underlying causesof homelessness. This vision expanded services to includeshelter, meals, counseling, case management,clinical services, substance abuse treatment,employment training and placement, and lifeskills education for over 17,000 individualsand families. This approach insures a continuumof care – providing stability and support aspeople establish new and productive lives.Jeanine’s leadership style has cast her asa magnet for change in the Greater Haverhillarea, and as instrumental in the effort to buildaffordable housing for special populations thatinclude elders. Her model focuses on serviceto give residents the support they need to leadproductive lives.She is an advocate in statewide initiativeson homelessness and a founding member ofthe Interfaith Network of Compassion linkinglocal churches with nonprofit service organizationsto address the needs of congregants.Jeanine also takes a leadership role withinthe nonprofit collaborative of the HaverhillChamber of Commerce which addresses theneed for greater efficiencies, fundraisingopportunities and visibility of nonprofitsthroughout the Merrimack Valley.James L.
