Myobjective in coming on board was to acquire necessary business skills and workexperience relevant to Alaskan Native culture. The value <strong>of</strong> Haa Latseen has been allencompassing <strong>of</strong> my daily schedule here. I have had <strong>the</strong> opportunity to work on severalprojects that focus on streng<strong>the</strong>ning Alaska Native students and providing leadershipopportunities for our Native people. The Latseen Leadership Academy 2013 will support<strong>the</strong> education and training <strong>of</strong> over 50 Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Alaska Native students; it encourageshealthy families and communities by enriching <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students with culturalactivities. Just as those students will sharpen <strong>the</strong>ir character with discipline andadaptability while at camp, so have I throughout my <strong>interns</strong>hip experience.

This summer I amworking my first <strong>interns</strong>hip for <strong>Sealaska</strong> as an intern in <strong>the</strong>Natural Resources department in Craig, Alaska.Values In Action StatementThis <strong>interns</strong>hip has provided me with forestry related experience in part <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>astAlaska that I had previously never visited, as well as experience with a unique business,<strong>Sealaska</strong>. <strong>Sealaska</strong>’s four Values In Action are clearly represented in my 10-week<strong>interns</strong>hip. Natural resources, especially <strong>the</strong> use and sustainability <strong>of</strong> our land, arehighly beneficial and necessary for <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Alaska to thrive. Theforestry practices that we have been instilling include clear-cut boundary marking, cedarseedling research implementation, and thinning inspections. These practices haveenabled <strong>the</strong> social and financial benefits from our natural resources from <strong>the</strong> past to becontinued through <strong>the</strong> indefinite future due to sustainable methods. This position hasprovided us with training from several different entities that will aid us in becomingleaders in our field. The fourth and final value that focuses on institutional partnershipsand collaboration can clearly be seen in <strong>the</strong> cedar seedling research study which iscombining <strong>the</strong> resources, time and effort <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sealaska</strong> Corporation, <strong>the</strong> United StatesForest Service, and Oregon State University employees. This <strong>interns</strong>hip has been aremarkable experience that has provided me with <strong>the</strong> opportunity to gain knowledgeand field techniques that will benefit my future career in <strong>the</strong> wildlife ecology field as wellas providing me with <strong>the</strong> background into <strong>the</strong> four Values In Action.

Working in natural resources I have had <strong>the</strong> opportunity totravel throughout Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Alaska and not only see our land now but also learn aboutits past and envision its future. I participated in many studies that reflect on how ourculture has evolved. One study that embodies every aspect <strong>of</strong> Haa Shagóon is <strong>the</strong>study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> decrease in cedar tree population. The importance <strong>of</strong> cedar trees identifiesand reflects on our heritage, sacred sites, and social and financial benefits for currentand future generations. Cedar trees are a symbolic measure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past, present andfuture. Their past is shown on <strong>the</strong> decades <strong>of</strong> growth presented on <strong>the</strong>ir rings, <strong>the</strong>present is reflected on <strong>the</strong> nurturing given to <strong>the</strong> seedlings and <strong>the</strong> care given to <strong>the</strong>Elders, and <strong>the</strong> future is represented by <strong>the</strong> vision <strong>of</strong> growth and strength. Throughoutmy <strong>interns</strong>hip I have seen how all <strong>the</strong> values interact with each o<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong>y haveshown me how <strong>the</strong>y will lead to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sealaska</strong> vision.

His career <strong>the</strong>n took him toGoldbelt, Ca<strong>list</strong>a, and <strong>the</strong> Alaskan Native medical center. Seeing him work at ANMC,and seeing <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> Natives taking care <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Natives is what inspired me topursue <strong>the</strong> career path in healthcare.
