High-quality Materials forLasting UseSpecial rules apply in our company concerning the selection ofappropriate materials: We only use materials and components whichmeet the require ments of the market and which are certified by supervisoryauthorities such as the DVGW (German Technical and ScientificAssociation for Gas and <strong>Water</strong>) if necessary. We also set high standards:Not only do the materials we use have to tolerate lasting contact withwater and other highly corrosive media, they also require special materialcomposition for intensive UV light or highly- reactive ozone treatment.We ensure our quality requirement by manufacturing as manycomponents as possible ourselves. As such, Xylem is one of the fewmanufacturers of UV equipment with its own UV lamp production.Quality is relived each dayBeyond material quality, we rely on consistently high-quality standardsin all divisions of the company. Our active quality management systemis geared towards internationally applicable standards and now meetsthe current standard DIN EN ISO 9001. Moreover, product quality andmanufacturing operations are constantly monitored and optimizedin continuous “kaizen” improvement processes. Established qualitycontrols give us and you the security of knowing that WEDECO UV andOzone systems will always operate reliably.16 17


Certifications CreateConfidenceIn order to objectively support our quality statements, WEDECO equipmentis certified according to the highest standards whenever required, such as theAmerican UL standard for electronic components or the European pressureequipment directive (97/23/EC). In regard to water disinfection with UV light,we have even defined strict standards together with the German certificationbody in Bonn, which today meet with the highest recognition worldwide asDVGW certification (German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and<strong>Water</strong>).The general rule is: If meeting a regulatory requirement is required forpermissible operation, there is always a WEDECO system which meets orexceeds that requirement, rest assured.18 19


UV TechnologyDisinfection with ultraviolet lightThe use of chlorine, chlorine dioxide, hypochlorite and otherchemical substances to disinfect liquids can result in effectswhich are detrimental to health and the environment. UVtech nology is the better alternative to chlorine disinfection.The intensively researched and technologically maturedisinfection method with ultraviolet light is adapted from thenatural action of sunlight.20 21


How UV Disinfection WorksUltraviolet light is energy-rich light with a wavelength of 200 - 400nano metres (nm). UV light is very versatile and can be used for disinfectingwater, destroying harmful microorganisms in other liquids, onsurfaces, and in the air. The intensive UV-C radiation, most stronglyin the wavelength range of 254 nm, reaches the microorganisms andimpacts directly on their DNA.By changing the DNA the cell division of the microorganism is interrupted- it can no longer reproduce itself and thus loses its pathogeniceffect. With UV technology it is possible to destroy more than 99.99 %of all pathogens within seconds, without the addition of chemicals,without harmful side effects, inexpensively, highly efficiently andabsolutely reliably.WEDECO UV systems are suited for the disinfection of drinking water,process water, wastewater, salt water, ultrapure water and other translucentfluids, such as sugar syrup.22 23


WEDECO UV LampTechnologyWe at Xylem recognized the potential of UV disinfection and theassociated lamp technology early on. Ever since, we have dedicateda large portion of our research to further development. The coreof our work, which started more than 30 years ago, is the continualimprovement of the performance and economic efficiency of ourUV technology. The result has been a high-performance low-pressureUV lamp which sets benchmarks.24 25


Long-life & Energy EfficiencyThe special characteristics of the WEDECO UV lamp are its special dopingand the unique long-life coating. Because of these futures, a constantly highUV light yield is achieved with a substantially extended lamp service life atthe same time. In addition, by using this technology it is not necessary toapply liquid mercury inside the lamp.WEDECO UV lamps cannot be surpassed economic efficiency. In relationto expenditure of energy, the High-Intensity/Low- Pressure Technologyprovides a light yield three times higher than comparable UV lamps ofwidely used Medium Pressure Technology.A higher light yield also means a lower heat generation at the same time.Thanks to this, WEDECO UV lamps become less susceptible to varyingwater temperatures. Even the formation of deposits on the quartz sleevesas well as lamp aging is considerably lower than with alternative UV lamptechnologies.26 27


Ozone TechnologyOzone is one of the strongest industrially producible oxidizingagents, and is commonly used for the treatment of water inmunicipal and industrial applications. The special advantageof Ozone is the environmentally friendly way in which it works.Harmful substances, colors, odors and microorganisms aredestroyed directly by oxidation, without the formation ofharmful chlorinated by-products.We at Xylem use this characteristic of Ozone with speciallydeveloped technology in a variety of applications. Apart fromthe treatment of drinking water and wastewater, our equipmentis used in bleaching processes, such as paper bleachingas well as in other industrial oxidation processes.28 29


Hightech for theEnvironmentOzone (O 3) consists of three oxygen atoms. Under normal near-earthconditions its molecular structure is unstable and thus the gas becomesvery reactive. The Ozone molecule reacts quickly with a number oforganic and inorganic compounds, either through directly acting on theOzone molecule or indirectly through hydroxyl radicals that are created.Ozone is usually consumed completely by this oxidation process anddecays back into oxygen. Any remaining Ozone in the off-gas is convertedback to oxygen (O 2) by a residual Ozone destructor.We developed a compact technology for maximum Ozone generationwith exceptionally low operating costs: WEDECO Effizon® evo. Byutilizing this technology, the production of large amounts of Ozonealso becomes extremely economical and absolutely safe for both theenvironment and the operating personnel. The WEDECO Effizon® evotechnology guarantees the highest performance and uncompromisingreliability at the lowest total cost.30 31


Effizon® evo TechnologyThe Effizon® evo electrode makes reliability possible like noother system. These patented electrodes create Ozone accordingto the principle of silent electrical discharge from oxygen or air.A high voltage is applied between an grounded high-grade steelpipe and an electrode fixed in it. The electrode and the groundedtube are separated by a dielectric, which creates two dischargegaps for the gas flow: both on the inside and the outside of thedielectric. Some of the oxygen molecules in the feed gas breakdown in the electric field and immediately attach themselves tofree oxygen molecules, forming Ozone.32 33

From the very beginning, thecompany’s business policy was shaped by the vision of chemical-free andenvironmentally friendly water treatment.Over the years, WEDECO has become a fixture within the world of environmentallyfriendly treatment of drinking water and wastewater with UV andOzone technology. Milestones of the company’s history are worldwide uniquelarge-scale projects and inventions which made UV disinfection and Ozoneoxidation an integral standard in the field of water treatment.1979 Thefirst lowpressurehigh output(Lo-Hi)amalgamlamp isdeveloped.1988 A hexagonal ozoneelectrode is developed,essentially improving theozone oxidation process.1995 Development of the WEDECO Effizon ® electrode.This patented electrode significantly reduces the cost ofozone generation by allowing substantially higher ozoneconcentrations to be produced from smaller, morecost-effective ozone generators.1992 - 1994 In order to use UV technologyin open wastewater channels,WEDECO engineers develop a daylightblindUV sensor, which allows smoothcontinuous operation of UV systemsin wastewater without special filtertechnology.WEDECO develops an electronic ballastfor low pressure UV lamps. Performanceis thus essentially optimized and energyconsumption is reduced.2001 WEDECO developsthe first multi-barrier system, asystem combining varioustreatment processes.2002 WEDECO develops the first high performance low pressureUV lamp providing highly improved performance and efficiency.Most efficient ozone systems worldwide is put into operation inSao Paulo, Brazil. The system produces more than 360 tons of ozone forpaper bleaching and thus supersedes 700 tons of chlorine - per month!To date, the largest UV disinfection system for wastewater in the worldis started up in Manukao, New Zealand. The installed WEDECO TAKsystem disinfects 16,000 l of wastewater per second.2004 The brandWEDECO becomes partof ITT Industries.2006 Using the most advanced computersimulations, the efficiency of UV disinfectionis further improved. Among other things, theresult is the development and patenting of theCrossMix ® module for optimizing the waterflow.2011 On October 31, 2011ITT <strong>Water</strong> & Wastewaterchanged in Xylem Inc.<strong>Wedeco</strong> becomes a Xylembrand.38 39
