Background / Spiral 1• TRAC-FLVN hosted IPT for the “Representation ofambiguity and HUMINT in modeling and simulation”through 2007• Execution of Spiral 1 of a three-spiral development effortbegan during that year• Spiral 1 objectives:– Creation / seeding of HUMINT “nuggets”– Transmission of nuggets through interview behavior– GUI to manage / view available information• Implementation:– Addition of HUMINT tab to the Intel battle command frame– Refactoring of Conduct Interview orderable behavior

Representing HUMINT• Lifeform entities (e.g. individual combatants, civilians) maybe configured to possess information "nuggets" that areeither:– Free-format– Descriptive of an activity (task)• Such configuration may take place before or duringscenario execution• Both formats include attributes to indicate subject, content, time of receipt, source, and classification• The HUMINT tab of the Intel Battle Command Frameprovides a graphical interface that exposes nuggetcontents to human role-players / analysts

The Intel Battle Command Frame

Types of HUMINT-generatedinformation• Free-format: Text without any particular structure. Thepreceding slide is an example of this type.• Task oriented: Interview subjects that are participants in afuture orderable behavior• If information transfer is partial, it is expressed using theseincrements:– Free format:• WHO: The interview subject• WHAT: The title of the nugget• WHEN: The nugget timestamp• DETAILS: The content– Task-oriented:• WHO: The ordered actor• WHAT: The title of the behavior (e.g. Construct HVIED)• WHEN: The behavior trigger (at time, on command, orcompletion of previous• DETAILS: Input parameters peculiar to the ordered behavior

Transmission of HUMINT• Information may be transferred from one lifeformto another by using the Conduct Intervieworderable behavior• The ordered actor approaches the interviewsubject, and after an appropriate time delay, information flows from the subject to theinterviewer.• The time needed to conduct the interview, aswell as the subject's inclination to be forthcomingis affected by:– Side relationship between subject/interviewer sides– Level of cooperation between subject/interviewer sides

Attenuating the flow of information• Side relationship: A discrete characterization ofhow entities from each side relate to each other.Side relationships need not be reciprocal.• Cooperation: A sliding-scale characterization ofentities' willingness to divulge information.

Influencing cooperation• Certain activities change the willingness of sides tocooperate:– Civil-military operations - Humanitarian relief operations– Psychological operations - Fires and effects– Coercion - Security• The effects of these activities are represented by theorderable behavior Influence Cooperation• Ordered actor occupies the area within which influence isdesired to be imposed; after an appropriate delay, theeffect on cooperation between the side performing theactivity and the sides of entities transiting the area ofinfluence is modified• The intensity of the effect is:– Proportional to the number of entities performing the actionand the number of influenced entities.– Inversely proportional to the size of the area of influence.

Spiral 2• Spiral 2 commenced in June 2008• Objectives:– Orderable behavior to canvas an area for HUMINT– Interface to map orderable behaviors to inferred intents– Association of skill levels with interviewers– Increased resolution of behavioral / informationattributes– Protocol for conveying incorrect information
