Howard Safir is currently chairman and chief executive officer<br />
of SafirRosetti, Omnicom Group Inc. SafirRosetti is a premier<br />
company serving the security and investigation needs of<br />
its clients both nationally and internationally. He also serves as<br />
consultant to the chair of Choice Point, a leading provider of credential<br />
verification and identification services.<br />
Howard was appointed 39th police commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor<br />
Rudolph W. Giuliani on April 15, 1996. In his four years as police commissioner, he<br />
achieved a 38 percent reduction in major crime and reduced homicides by 44 percent,<br />
the lowest level in three decades.<br />
Commissioner Safir began his law enforcement career in 1965 as a special agent<br />
assigned to the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, a forerunner of<br />
the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). He advanced through the ranks of the<br />
DEA and in 1977 was appointed assistant director of the DEA. He also served as<br />
chief of the Witness Security Division, U.S. Marshals Service. In 1984 he was named<br />
associate director for operations for the U.S. Marshals Service, a position he held<br />
until his retirement from the federal government in 1990. Howard rejoined<br />
government service in 1994 when Mayor Giuliani asked him to serve as New York<br />
City’s 29th fire commissioner.<br />
Throughout his career, Howard has been recognized frequently for his outstanding service.<br />
In 1996 he was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He was twice awarded<br />
the Presidential Meritorious Service Award and the Attorney General’s Achievement<br />
Award, and is the recipient of <strong>Hofstra</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Award for Alumni Achievement.<br />
Howard is the author of a book entitled Security: Policing your Homeland, Your<br />
State, Your City.<br />
Howard and his wife of 36 years, Carol, reside in Manhattan. They have a son,<br />
Adam, and a daughter, Jennifer.

After graduating from <strong>Hofstra</strong>, Drew (an ROTC cadet) was<br />
assigned to active duty in the U.S. Army. After serving, he and<br />
Roz moved back to New York, where he began a career in the chemical and pharmaceutical<br />
fields and she continued hers in education. Drew also earned an M.S. in biology and an<br />
M.B.A. in pharmaceutical marketing. He is currently vice president for regulatory and quality<br />
affairs for Wellspring Pharmaceutical Corporation.<br />

staff as senior financial analyst-mergers and acquisitions, after which, he<br />
was promoted to corporate manager of planning. Ray then was promoted out to<br />
the SCM office products division as director of planning and analysis, and lastly,<br />
director of product marketing.<br />
Ray joined Schumacher as manager of financial planning and analysis. In 1986<br />
he was promoted to vice president, marketing services and administration. By<br />
1994 he was again promoted to vice president, corporate marketing. In 1997 the<br />
board of directors named Ray senior vice president, marketing as part of a senior<br />
management realignment. As the company went through a restructuring in<br />
August 1998 Ray took on the responsibility of acting president for the new<br />
Interior Design Group.<br />

HOFSTRA BIDS FAREWELL TO ALLAN TOD GITTLESON<br />
<strong>Hofstra</strong> <strong>University</strong> is saddened by the passing of Chairman Emeritus<br />
Allan Tod Gittleson. A generous and dedicated member of the<br />
<strong>Hofstra</strong> <strong>University</strong> Board of Trustees since 1967, Chairman<br />
Emeritus Gittleson served from 1973 to 1975, and was named<br />
Chairman Emeritus in 1992. He was the founder and CEO of<br />
the <strong>Hofstra</strong> Health Dome. In 1979 <strong>Hofstra</strong>’s life sciences building<br />
was dedicated in his honor.<br />
Mr. Gittleson was the creator and a major benefactor of the<br />
<strong>University</strong>’s Distinguished Academic Scholar Program, an active supporter<br />
of the NOAH program for under-represented student populations, the<br />
Program for Higher Education of the Disabled, and the School of Law. He was<br />
named an Honorary Alumnus of <strong>Hofstra</strong> in 1987.<br />
Mr. Gittleson is survived by his wife, Mildred, daughters June and Nancy ’82, ’84,<br />
three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.<br />

Former <strong>Hofstra</strong> <strong>University</strong> Trustee<br />
and American <strong>University</strong> President<br />
George H. Williams passed away on<br />
May 18, 20<strong>03</strong>, at the age of 85.<br />
George earned a bachelor of arts in<br />
1939 and continued a strong relationship<br />
with the <strong>University</strong>. In<br />
addition to serving as a trustee, he<br />
was honored with the George M.<br />
Estabrook Award in 1961 and was<br />
named <strong>Hofstra</strong>’s Alumnus of the<br />
Year in 1965. In 1969 he was presented<br />
with an honorary doctorate.<br />
He is survived by his wife, Molly;<br />
children Mary Beth, Jeanne, Kevin<br />
and Stephen; and five grandchildren.<br />
