Howard Safir is currently chairman and chief executive officer
of SafirRosetti, Omnicom Group Inc. SafirRosetti is a premier
company serving the security and investigation needs of
its clients both nationally and internationally. He also serves as
consultant to the chair of Choice Point, a leading provider of credential
verification and identification services.
Howard was appointed 39th police commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor
Rudolph W. Giuliani on April 15, 1996. In his four years as police commissioner, he
achieved a 38 percent reduction in major crime and reduced homicides by 44 percent,
the lowest level in three decades.
Commissioner Safir began his law enforcement career in 1965 as a special agent
assigned to the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, a forerunner of
the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). He advanced through the ranks of the
DEA and in 1977 was appointed assistant director of the DEA. He also served as
chief of the Witness Security Division, U.S. Marshals Service. In 1984 he was named
associate director for operations for the U.S. Marshals Service, a position he held
until his retirement from the federal government in 1990. Howard rejoined
government service in 1994 when Mayor Giuliani asked him to serve as New York
City’s 29th fire commissioner.
Throughout his career, Howard has been recognized frequently for his outstanding service.
In 1996 he was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He was twice awarded
the Presidential Meritorious Service Award and the Attorney General’s Achievement
Award, and is the recipient of Hofstra University’s Award for Alumni Achievement.
Howard is the author of a book entitled Security: Policing your Homeland, Your
State, Your City.
Howard and his wife of 36 years, Carol, reside in Manhattan. They have a son,
Adam, and a daughter, Jennifer.

The Karlans met in history class during Roz’s freshman
year and have been married for 34 years. Drew graduated
with a B.A. in biology in 1966, Roz a B.S.Ed. in elementary
education in 1967.
After graduating from Hofstra, Drew (an ROTC cadet) was
assigned to active duty in the U.S. Army. After serving, he and
Roz moved back to New York, where he began a career in the chemical and pharmaceutical
fields and she continued hers in education. Drew also earned an M.S. in biology and an
M.B.A. in pharmaceutical marketing. He is currently vice president for regulatory and quality
affairs for Wellspring Pharmaceutical Corporation.
They reside in Freehold, NJ and have two grown children (Mara and Adam) and
five grandchildren.

staff as senior financial analyst-mergers and acquisitions, after which, he
was promoted to corporate manager of planning. Ray then was promoted out to
the SCM office products division as director of planning and analysis, and lastly,
director of product marketing.
Ray joined Schumacher as manager of financial planning and analysis. In 1986
he was promoted to vice president, marketing services and administration. By
1994 he was again promoted to vice president, corporate marketing. In 1997 the
board of directors named Ray senior vice president, marketing as part of a senior
management realignment. As the company went through a restructuring in
August 1998 Ray took on the responsibility of acting president for the new
Interior Design Group.

Hofstra University is saddened by the passing of Chairman Emeritus
Allan Tod Gittleson. A generous and dedicated member of the
Hofstra University Board of Trustees since 1967, Chairman
Emeritus Gittleson served from 1973 to 1975, and was named
Chairman Emeritus in 1992. He was the founder and CEO of
the Hofstra Health Dome. In 1979 Hofstra’s life sciences building
was dedicated in his honor.
Mr. Gittleson was the creator and a major benefactor of the
University’s Distinguished Academic Scholar Program, an active supporter
of the NOAH program for under-represented student populations, the
Program for Higher Education of the Disabled, and the School of Law. He was
named an Honorary Alumnus of Hofstra in 1987.
Mr. Gittleson is survived by his wife, Mildred, daughters June and Nancy ’82, ’84,
three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Former Hofstra University Trustee
and American University President
George H. Williams passed away on
May 18, 2003, at the age of 85.
George earned a bachelor of arts in
1939 and continued a strong relationship
with the University. In
addition to serving as a trustee, he
was honored with the George M.
Estabrook Award in 1961 and was
named Hofstra’s Alumnus of the
Year in 1965. In 1969 he was presented
with an honorary doctorate.
He is survived by his wife, Molly;
children Mary Beth, Jeanne, Kevin
and Stephen; and five grandchildren.
