In 1920, sheand her parents moved to Raleigh and she took a sales positionwith W.T. Grant Co. She remained with Grant until 1924 when she became a telephone operatorwith Southern Bell.


In 1924, she transferred her church membership to Johnson Memorial Church in Raleigh andthen later in 1932 to Ephesus Baptist Church. She was an active member and church deacon atEphesus for a number of years.On October 31, 1925, she married James Smith from Bladen County. James had moved toRaleigh following his discharge from the Army in World War I. Together they built a home inthe newly developing Oakdale Community just west of Raleigh. After James' death in 1949, shemaintained the household for nearly 50 years. During her widowhood, she developed a practiceof attending to new born infants. In her retirement, she was joined in the household by her sisterRuby and her husband Alton "Goat" Pearce.
