S&S ® Step 2: Camshafts and PushrodsCamshaftsS&S <strong>Cycle</strong> is becoming known for camshafts. What you may not know is we grindour own cams in-house, at our facility in Viola, Wisconsin. Cams for the 4-StepPerformance Program are mostly the bolt-in type, although more aggressivecams can be used in Step 4 since the S&S CNC porting package includes high liftvalve springs. High lift springs are also available for stock heads.One unique feature of S&S cams, for <strong>1999</strong> and later <strong>big</strong> <strong>twin</strong>s, is the patentedEasy Start centrifugal compression release system that allows a stock starter tostart just about any engine regardless of displacement or compression ratio.Another unique patented feature available in cams for late model <strong>big</strong><strong>twin</strong>s is the S&S gear drive. Get rid of troublesome stock drive chains andtensioners, and replace them with dependable gear driven cams. Goodtorque, and better horsepower than the 551. If you need your bike to do everythingwell this is a great cam choice. Test bike was equipped with S&S slip-on mufflers andan S&S performance air cleaner. Stock results are shown for comparison.The S&S 585 cam is the one to choose if you are primarily concerned with peakhorsepower. Less low end grunt, but lots of top end. A good choice for lighter bikesand will bring out the full potential of a <strong>big</strong> bore kit when you move up to Step 3.Test bike was equipped with S&S slip-on mufflers and an S&S performance aircleaner.
