The two years he wasn’t with the team —1999 and 2000 — the Vikings won itall. His players made sure he reaped the rewards Friday night, wrapping up a dominatingsweep through the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series with a 13-2 victory over SheltonState (Ala.) Community College at Suplizio Field.“I’ve been a part of every trip we’ve been on instead of the two we won,” Hart said, laughing. “I’m not one of those guys who doubts myself, but I don’t think about it that much,to be honest with you. Maybe I’m just a simple man. This is my dream, this is why I do whatI do and this is why I’m in junior college. I want to come to Grand Junction every year.”Hart, in his third year as the Vikings’ skipper, won his first national title thanks to aninspirational pitching performance from Conrad Flynn, who struck out 11, didn’t walk abatter and allowed two runs on six hits in a complete-game performance.“He was unbelievable,” Hart said. “He went out and threw strikes, commanded the strikezone. He didn’t have his breaking ball his first outing and tonight it was outstanding, justoutstanding. He walked 13 guys the entire year. He’s so competitive. I knew we had a goodshot to win the game tonight because of him.”His big first baseman, Alex Johnson, helped out by crushing a three-run home run to thedeepest part of the park in the decisive third inning after Eric Walker beat out an infieldsingle and Bo Coffman lined a base hit to right.“The atmosphere was wild,” Johnson said. “I’m glad everyone came out and supported us.People dressed up like Vikings. All our fans came out and supported us. We did what we setout to do in the fall.”Johnson’s home run turned a 3-2 game into a 6-2 cushion, and allowed the rest of theVikings to relax a little bit. And boy, did they ever relax. After the home run, the Vikingsscored in every inning except the sixth and ninth and Flynn never let Shelton State (49-18)in the game.“Finally, my curveball got over the plate and set up my fastball,” said Flynn, who wasselected as the tournament’s outstanding pitcher, picking up two wins and winning thehearts of the fans — his older brother, Layton, is serving with the U.S. Army in Afghanistanand sent an e-mail message wishing his brother and teammates good luck, which wasdelivered over the public address system in the opener.TOURNAMENT RESULTSSaturday, May 24Game 1 Shelton State Community College; def.
