1959<br />
The 2 nd Congress <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e was held <strong>in</strong> the Pathology Lecture Theatre under<br />
the Presidency <strong>of</strong> Dr H M McGladdery, formerly Senior Surgeon at S<strong>in</strong>gapore<br />
General Hospital and then later at Lady Templar Hospital <strong>in</strong> Kuala Lumpur,<br />
Malaya. The Congress was held from 28-29 August 1965. It was declared<br />
open by Mr Reg<strong>in</strong>ald Quah, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University <strong>of</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore.<br />

1963<br />
The 1 st Congress <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e was<br />
held at the Pathology Lecture<br />
Theatre <strong>in</strong> the grounds <strong>of</strong> the<br />
S<strong>in</strong>gapore General Hospital from<br />
3-5 May 1963. The President <strong>of</strong><br />
the 1 st Congress was Sir Gordon<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e, University <strong>of</strong><br />

1963<br />
ARMORIAL BEARINGS<br />
The Armorial Bear<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e were<br />
designed by the Pursuivant <strong>of</strong> Arms at the College <strong>of</strong> Arms,<br />
London and were granted by the Sovereign’s K<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> Arms<br />
(Garter, Clarenceux and Norroy and Ulster) on 20 June 1962.<br />
The Coat <strong>of</strong> Arms is as follows: “Per pale and per chevron<br />
Gules and Azure a Chevron cotised between three Leopards'<br />
faces Or And for the Crest On a Wreath, Or, Gules and Azure<br />
Two Eagles’ heads addorsed Azure beaked Or and gorged<br />
with a chaplet <strong>of</strong> Roses - Gules barbed and seeded <strong>in</strong> each<br />
beak a Poppy slipped and leaved proper”.<br />
In the centre <strong>of</strong> the Shield, the Chevron symbolises the<br />
com<strong>in</strong>g-together <strong>of</strong> the Specialties <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e under one<br />
ro<strong>of</strong> - the <strong>Academy</strong>. The three Pards represent the territories<br />
<strong>in</strong> the S<strong>in</strong>gapore-Malaysia region. The two Eagles’ heads <strong>of</strong><br />
the Crest rem<strong>in</strong>d us <strong>of</strong> the privilege we had <strong>of</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
family Arms <strong>of</strong> our first Master, Gordon Ransome, <strong>in</strong> the<br />
early years <strong>of</strong> our existence. The Poppies denote our common<br />
desire to relieve pa<strong>in</strong>. The Motto RECTA SAPERE urges us<br />
to seek and savour the truth at all times.<br />

1981<br />
Mr Goh Chok Tong, the M<strong>in</strong>ister for Health and 2 nd M<strong>in</strong>ister<br />
for Defence paid a visit to the <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e,<br />
S<strong>in</strong>gapore on 16 October 1981. The picture shows the<br />
Master, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lim P<strong>in</strong> greet<strong>in</strong>g Mr Goh on his arrival.<br />
The M<strong>in</strong>ister's team comprised Dr Andrew G K Chew, the<br />
Permanent Secretary (Health)/Director <strong>of</strong> Medical Services.

The <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>in</strong>augurated the Tan Sri Runme Shaw<br />
Lecture <strong>in</strong> conjunction with the Silver Jubilee <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Academy</strong>. This lectureship is set up to promote the<br />
advancement <strong>of</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e on an <strong>in</strong>ternational basis. It is<br />
open to dist<strong>in</strong>guished members <strong>of</strong> the medical pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />
on subjects related to medic<strong>in</strong>e or medical science. The<br />
First Runme Shaw Lecturer was Dr John Baxter, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
<strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Biochemistry, University <strong>of</strong><br />
California, United States <strong>of</strong> America.<br />
