Care andRepair is accessible to those over 65 and provides voluntary assistancewith such tasks as changing bulbs and fuses, hanging curtains, minor painting and decorating, lawn mowing, tacking carpetsor installing home security devices.Youghal Care and Repair evolved from the monthly CommunityAlert meetings, following a suggestion by regular attender PatCarey. The idea was pursued, assisted by Cumman na Daoine andin particular staff member Stacy Quinlivan and Ann MarieMcCarthy. Further help and support was provided by Age ActionIreland which, in partnership with Irish Life, has a programmecommitted to 'creating new services that help other people toacquire independence fulfilling lives for as long as they wish intheir own homes.'The Youghal service is now fully established and held its inauguralmonthly committee meeting last week. Desmond Davis, aWicklow man resident in Youghal for three years, is its first chairman, working alongside PRO and community garda, PeterQueally.Desmond, a former farmer (he once worked the farm that was latercultivated by Biddy and Miley in the Glenroe series) and now aMethodist minister, speaks with quiet pride and confidence of thenew resource. "We presently have a core group of about 15 volunteers,"he explains. They are aged roughly from 20's to 60's andinclude two females. Some are professional tradespeople and others, like me, are just general handymen but it's fair to say we havea wide range of abilities. All our volunteers are garda vetted," headds.Short waitOver 65's who seek to avail of the service are asked to contactCumman na Daoine with details of the task required. The groupwill select two volunteers to visit the client, matching abilities asclose as possible to the job at hand. "Waiting time should not bemore than a couple of days and ideally he jobs we undertakeshould take about two to three hours to complete," says Desmond. While the manpower comes free of charge the onus is on thehouseholder to provide the appropriate materials. The chairman is keen to stress that the service is confined to minormaintenance. "We don't attempt anything like electrical or plumbingjobs and certainly will not take work from tradespeople," heexplains. "Also, we don't climb ladders or undertake anything elsewith a personal safety risk. Computer and television repairs wouldalso be outside our remit. "Thus far the group has answered about a dozen calls amidst "muchappreciation," says Desmond. A gradual growth in requests can beexpected as the profile spreads. "It's still very new in Youghal anda lot of people are probably unaware of the service," Desmond surmises."In that sense we are not just eager for more people to callus but would also welcome new volunteers."SociableIn a world where age and alienation are too often associates thebenefits can extend beyond just painting a skirting board."Because we work in pairs, one volunteer might spend more timejust chatting over tea with the householder. Observes the chairman."So the social benefits cannot be underestimated. In fact theoverall benefits are two-way, with volunteers acquiring great satisfactionas well."Youghal Care and Repair Service is available through Cumann naDaoine on 024-91900 (Mon-Fri, 9.30 am-5.00 pm)

NEW GALLERY IMPROVES THE PICTURE ON YOUGHAL'S MAIN STREETindividual," says Eileen.McGoldrick's Art & Photography,89, North Main Street, Youghal.Tel: (024) 90494; Mob: 087-22865921 or 087-4116483.Web: www.mcgoldrickart.comemail: mcgoldrickart@gmail.comKILLEAGH COURSING CLUBBy Christy ParkerThe credibility of Youghal's main street as a commercial centre hasbeen further reinforced with the opening of new photography andart gallery in a prime location. Consumers and fellow retailersalike on the beleaguered thoroughfare will welcome the advent ofMcGoldrick's Art & Photography at 89 North Main Street. Thesite, adjacent to the Clock Gate, had been idle for mere weeks followingthe closure of the previous fashion accessories outlet.Proprietor Eileen McGoldrick and her husband Will Nick havelived in Youghal for about eight years and reside in Strand Street. The Belfast-born couple have previously lived in Oxford and overpast decades have developed an impressive reputation in the artsworld, hosting acclaimed exhibitions in Oxford and London aswell as Cork and Dungarvan on this side of the pond. With a target market of locals and tourists, the location obviouslyis of prime relevance. However the "quality of natural light", thatflows through the front and side windows was a major factor inchoosing location. Alongside selected manufactured illumination, the combination brings a focus of perfection to the works on display.Variety The inaugural exhibition stretches across photography, oils and acrylic, though the display will alternate monthly. Withinthe compact space, the visitor can browse, for example, on theastounding depictions of Helvic Head cliff faces and beach rocks, their shapes and pastel hues rendered unique and enchantingthrough the magic of Will's photography. "One visitor said sheadmired 'the aerial view of the Caribbean island," smiles Will. "Infact it was a view of a rock from Ballycotton!"Eileen's inventive cross-media pieces offer the colourful surrealismbegat from subjecting acrylic, cloth netting and scanning technologyto an unfettered imagination. The results reflect 'dreamsequences' but are subject to individual interpretation.Elsewhere a photo of derelict fishing boat's revealed layers ofcolours bear witness to its lives, competing for attention with theacrylic depiction of a woman in a black dress hanging white washingagainst a background of industrial rust. A rainbow finds theFerry Point, Muckross Abbey stands sultry, Moby Dick's pinkperkiness is viewed from the Pier Head past the blue hue of a boat.Other creativities are manifested book form, themed to unravel bythe enamoured page. From envelope-sized originals of €8 cost to30 inch square masterpieces of seventy times that value, the wallsand shelves do their new home proud. If the works are beautiful, they are complimented by their creators'belief. "I have great confidence in selling art, if art can be sold, onYoughal's main street," says Eileen. Yet she equally yearns to createan oasis perhaps "where visitors can browse, with no pressureto buy" and where they can view art for art's sake -evocativelyreminding them of what derives from their own lives.Classes McGoldrick Art & Photography will also host art lessonsweekly, on Mondays. Two sessions, managed by Eileen, will caterseparately for children and adults. Classes are open to all levelsfrom total novices to budding Van Gogh's! Once in the year in the middleof the Lent these children were given a day off to visit their'Mother Church' and worship Virgin Mary. After visiting theMother Church or Cathedral of their home town these childrenvisited their mothers and presented them with flowers theypicked along the way. M O T H E R ’ S D A Y - S U N D A Y A P R I L 3 R DIn most countries, Mother's Day is a recent observance derivedfrom the holiday as it has evolved in North America and Europe. When it was adopted by other countries and cultures, it was givendifferent meanings, associated to different events (religious, historicalor legendary), and celebrated in a different date or dates. Some countries already had existing celebrations honoring motherhood, and their celebrations have adopted several external characteristicsfrom the US holiday, like giving carnations and otherpresents to your own mother. The extent of the celebrations varies greatly. In some countries, itis potentially offensive to one's mother not to mark Mother's Day.In others, it is a little-known festival celebrated mainly by immigrants,or covered by the media as a taste of foreign culture (comparethe celebrations of Diwali in the UK and the United States). In the Catholic Church, the holiday is strongly associated with reverencingthe Virgin Mary.In Hindu tradition it is called "Mata Tirtha Aunshi" or "MotherPilgrimage fortnight", and it is celebrated in countries with Hindupopulation, especially in Nepal.MOTHER’S DAY QUOTESMothers are fonder than fathers of their children because they aremore certain they are their own. ~AristotleMother love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to dothe impossible. ~Marion C. Hitting a pothole can cause serious internal tyredamage, which may result in dangerous sidewall bulges, or resultin cuts to the tyre which may expose cords, rendering it both dangerousand illegal. Potholes can cause significant damage towheels and tyres. It's therefore important for drivers to ensure theirtyres are properly inflated to reduce any potential damage. If theydo suffer the misfortune of hitting a pothole, drivers should makesure both their wheels and tyres are thoroughly inspected by a professionalfor signs of damage. This may occur in the form of cutsor bulges in the tyre or in increasing cases hairline fracturesappearing in alloy wheels. In fact, whatever time of year it is motorists should always checktheir tyre pressure at least once a month and especially if they areplanning any long journeys.Other effects of hitting a pothole include wheel misalignment. Ifthere is significant misalignment the car may pull to one side orcause vibrations in the steering wheel which can be distracting andmake the vehicle difficult to control. In less severe cases this cango unnoticed by the driver yet still result in increased or irregulartyre wear and higher fuel costs. Many garages and tyre dealersoffer free tyre safety inspections for drivers. Properly equippedworkshops can also perform some quick and simple checks tomake sure the wheels are properly alignedHow to check your tyre pressurescorrectly:1. Check your tyre pressures atleast once a month.2. Tyre pressures should bechecked against the vehicle manufacturer'srecommended levelwhich can be found in the vehiclehandbook and on a platewhich is often located inside thefuel filler cap or on front doorsills or pillars.3. Check the pressure when tyresare cold (i.e. when you havetravelled less than two miles).4. If you are carrying a full load of passengers or luggage or willbe towing a trailer or caravan, pressures should be increased inline with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.5. Ensure a reliable and accurate gauge is used.6. Check the pressure in all four tyres not forgetting the spare.7. When checking pressures, give the rest of the tyre a visualinspection. Remove any stone or other objects embedded in thetread. Look out for any bulges, lumps or cuts.8. If you are unsure on any aspect of tyre pressure or tyre conditiontake your vehicle to an approved fitting centre and speak to aqualified specialist.

YOUGHAL AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY ALERT MEETING MARCH 2011By Christy ParkerThe March meeting of Youghal and District Community Alert washeld at 11 am in the Red Store on Tuesday March 1st. Guest speakerson the occasion were Peter Butler form TASK, a communitycare organisation that supplies, installs and monitors socially monitoredalarms and Desmond Davis of the local Care and Repairservice.Crime figures Community Garda Peter Queally the crime statisticsfor the previous month. There were 29 persons stopped andsearched for drugs and four premises searched under warrant. Tenpersons were found in possession of drugs for personal use andtwo with intent to supply. The total street value of drugs seized€3,500.There was one assault causing harm and one common assault at ahouse party. No statements were forthcoming. A file had been forwardedto the DPP regarding an assault in a licensed premises inJanuary. Of two reported burglaries, investigations were ongoinginto theft from a holiday home in Cork Hill, while a man was incustody following a burglary at a licensed premises in whichapproximately €200 had been stolen. There were seven public disorder incidents, with six arrests andsix reported criminal damage cases with one detection. Tworeported thefts involved a Lithuanian gang targeting a pharmacyand the gang were in custody. Secondly, high-powered batterieswere stolen from a road sign in Garryduff.ScamsRetailers were warned of 'a change scam' in which foreign nationalshave confused shop staff with requests to change notes in asynchronised, complex that leaves victims confused and conned. Also, ATM's are targeted in which a plastic device known preventsthe cash from exiting, before the criminal removes both it and themoney.Socially monitored alarmsTASK representative Peter Butler reviewed the availability andfunctionality of socially monitored alarms thus: grant funding isavailable for over 65's living alone or in couples with a landline. They can also be purchased privately @ €250 (TASK price). Anannual maintenance fee of €66 is required and not grant aided. The base unit is usually installed in a hallway. It permits a twowaycommunication with the unit's Dublin-based central monitoringstation. This is achieved by pressing a device (or 'panic button')usually of a neck pendant or wristwatch. The station callsthree phone numbers representing family/house key holders, inorder of preference and the gardai if these options prove unsuccessful.Mr Butler stressed the importance of wearing the pendant/watchat all times, to offset the unexpected.Other aspects of the alarm units include 10 year batteries and afacility to warn the householder if the house temperature fluctuatesdangerously. The signal operates up to 100 metres extendingto outdoors. .Smoke and CO2 alarmsMr. Butler said our sense of smell ceases during sleep. The monitoredsmoke alarms work similarly to the accident equivalent, except smoke activates the system. The service was also valuablewhen a householder was absent from home. These alarms cost €75but again grant assistance is available through the Seniors AlertScheme. The criteria of 'living alone' was not compromised byregular or overnight visits from family members etc. He advisedthat smoke alarms not be located in kitchens, where heat detectorsare more appropriate. Also featured were carbon monoxide detectors. Mr, Butler saidgas and oil posed a risk of exposure to carbon monoxide. Hedescribed various ways by which to lessen the danger; a) cleanchimney, b) have boilers regularly serviced and beware of blackdeposits, c) ensure house is well ventilated. He said there werevarious levels of exposure -two hours' exposure of 200 parts CO2might cause headaches, 400 parts induce nausea also, while 800parts could cause unconsciousness. The detector sets off a signalonce exposure surpasses 300 parts. This alarm could be purchasedprivately for €100 but grant-aid was available for the over 65's.(All three alarms can be acquired with grant assistance under theSenior Alert programme. Any grant application needs submissionof quotes from three distinct companies. The €66 annual maintenancefee covers any or all alarm systems and is not grant-aided)Application forms for all devices are available at Youghal gardastation (Tele: 024-92200). Mr Buler concluded his address withadvice on how to minimise risk of falls: i) get eyes tested; ii)makes sure floor space is uncluttered; iii) wear safe shoes and iv)provide adhesive maths in bathroom.Senior Alert SchemeThe Senior Alert Scheme is a project under which voluntarygroups register for grant aid on behalf of individuals. Other servicesprovided under the scheme include exterior home securitylighting (€120), with dawn-to-dusk systems preferable to the sensoronly version that a wandering cat is liable to activate! TASKcontact number: (01) 8435889; Peter Butler 086-0568155; net:www.taskltd.com.Caring and RepairingIn a comparatively brief address, Mr. Desmond Davies, ofYoughal Care and Repair service spoke. Mr Davies explained that the workersundertake minor jobs on behalf of the elderly (65+) and themore vulnerable members of society. Exemplary chores includelawn mowing, changing bulbs, tacking carpets, installing locks, curtain hanging, etc.The householder provides the work materials and the volunteersprovide the free service. The mostphysical and quickest game of the season so far, but all of the ladsstood up for themselves very well. After three minutes JoshSheridan had to be taken off with a bang to the head. The gamestarted with both sides going flat out, and that was the way it progressedright up to the final whistle. Some brilliant tackling, ruckingand mauling by both sides. The first try came from KelvinYellop but it was followed shortly by a try from Old Christians, that was the kind of game it was.The game finished 5 all which was a fair result because nobodydeserved to loose. Scorers for Youghal Kelvin Yellop 3 tries,Gerry O'Riordan 1 try, Ben Ingomells 1 try & Oran Finn 1 try.Team: Gerry O'Riordan, Tiernan McCarthy, Finn O'Brien, ConorKenefick, Thomas Power, James O'Shea, Conor O'Neill, KelvinYellop, Ben Ingomells, Josh Sheridan, Daniel Power, Oran Finn,Tiernan Power & Olan Coleman. Coach Warren Terry.U8's V Old ChristiansTeam: Catal Hunt, Oisin Hill, Enda Cronin, Brian Coleman, RoryFitzgerald, Jack Nicholson & Owen Ingomells. Result: Draw 7 allCoaches: Brian Gaynor and Alan Fox.In a free flowing match with plenty of tackles and tries, a hardworking Youghal team did very well against worthy opponents. Amixture of swerving and straight running from Oisin produced thelead for Youghal. Oisin went on to be the top scorer in this gamewith some fine service from his team mates. Notable tackling fromBrian Coleman and Jack Nicholson kept the teams close. The secondhalf saw Old Christians and Youghal swapping the lead withneither able to stretch into a big lead. With Cathal, Oisin, Enda and Jack amongst the scorers the try ofthe match without doubt was a great team effort. Initial workpushing forward by Cathal and Oisin, then Brian, Jack and Endain support, saw Rory pick and go down the touchline dodgingtacklers before he was eventually stopped 5 metres out. Roryquickly offloaded a perfect pass to Owen who broke through twotacklers to score, completing a team move in great style.Darragh Nolan, Mike Jieresme & Harry Yellop. In a pitch that was heavy under foot, Youghal faced a tough OldChristians side that had the advantage of playing downfield withthe kick off. In the blink of an eye Christians showed their potentialwith a fine try down the right wing. Within minutes afterstringing a few passes together, that resulted in Ben Donovan findingspace, he didn't hesitate in making sure of Youghals first try. There was no question of commitment from either side during thefirst half with plenty of hard tackles, fine passing and plenty ofshouting to "get in line"! In the second half Youghal started withthe downhill advantage. Maybe it's the fact that Youghal are usedto playing on a sloping pitch but when they re-started they openedup Christians like a tin of tuna! Trys from Liam Moylan (1),Thomas Ahern (1) and Martin Mulcahy (1) gave Youghal a cushion. But alas, Youghal showed their inexperience at the breakdownlosing possession time and time again allowing Christians to comewithin shouting distance of Youghal. Defensively Youghal performedwell, especially with the presence of Darragh Nolan, MikeJiereseme, Dylan Roche and Kane O'Keeffe. However Christianssuperior knowledge of the line-outs and scrums showed howmuch Youghal need to practice these set pieces in the comingweeks. With only ten minutes left in the second half Youghal got to gripswith Christians to push over the line with plenty left in the tank.Additional tries by Thomas Ahern (3), Padraig Quilligan (1) andLiam Moylan (2). Crucial to Youghals win but not limited to wereMark Mulcahy, Harry Yellop, Ethan Power, Ruairi McSweeneyand Simon Kelly. The most improved player in this encounter wasMartin Mulcahy. In his first match as scrum half he showed greatperseverance in a tough environment. YOUGHAL UNITED AFCGirls U14 Soccer Youghal Utd 6 - Avondale Utd 2Youghal Utd moved to second place in the table after this comprehensivevictory at Ardrath Park. This was the first time this seasonthat Youghal could draw from a full squad of players and itshowed in a dominant display. Youghal spurned a number ofopportunities early on in the game before finally breaching thetough Avondale rearguard marshaled by the excellent AislingFitzgerald. From Holly Twomey’s short corner Rachel Galvinreturned the ball first time to the striker whose excellent crossfound Rachel Geary unmarked inside the area. Rachel controlledsuperbly before slotting the ball home into the net. For almost theentire half, Youghal pressed for a second. Holly Twomey continuedto torment Avondale down the right assisted by the outstandingClaire Keniry with Amy Benaim, Rachel Geary and RachelGalvin all having chances to extend the lead. Avondale’s resiliencewas rewarded shortly before the break when a fortunate reboundoff the referee fell to Avondale forward Jane ? who finishedsuperbly. Despite the 1-1 scoreline, Youghal had a superb firsthalf playing their best football of the season. That form continuedearly after the break when Holly Twomey cut in from the right, beating two defenders and a great pass found Amy Benaim. Amy’sfirst-time attempt got caught under her feet and when the ballsquirmed loose Rachel Geary again pounced to make it 2-1 wit alooping effort. Rachel Galvin then made it 3-1 again from a HollyTwomey assist. However, plucky Avondale caused nerves in theYoughal ranks when Aisling Fitzgerald struck from distance toscore a beautiful goal, reducing the deficit to 3-2. With AllyMcCormack’s influence growing down the Avondale right thegame was now in the balance. With Youghal visibly tiringAvondale pressed for an equaliser with the influential AislingFitzgerald pushing into midfield. All of Youghal’s backline stoodfirm and their commitment allowed Rachel Galvin to score a furthertwo goals for Youghal to break Avondale’s resolve. Her firstcame courtesy of a slight deflection. Set up by Holly Twomey hershot from the edge of the area spun inside the right post. The number7 added a second and needed no assistance as she outran thevisitor’s defence and struck an unstoppable shot beyond thedespairing keeper. The game now looked safe at 5-2 but greatcredit to Avondale who continued to test Youghal’s resolutedefence. A brilliant interchange of passing between Rachel Galvin,Claire Keniry and Holly Twomey should have resulted in anotherscore but Holly’s well placed effort beat both the keeper and thepost. Youghal scored a sixth with the last kick of the game whenEmma Varney’s low, hard cross was turned in by the tireless AmyBenaim. A great performance that saw hard work matched by greatpassing and finishing to collect a well-deserved three points.Squad: Stephanie Fitzgerald, Sarah Roche, Katie Manning,Marie-Louise Keane, Jen Geary, Rachel Galvin, Rachel Geary,Claire Keniry, Emily Roche, Holly Twomey, Amy Benaim, EllenBenaim, Emma Varney, Lynda Galvin.YOUGHAL ATHLETIC CLUB(Sponsored by Youghal Credit Union)The following are the results and up coming fixtures of YoughalAthletic Club:The only result worth mentioning this week must be the worldfamous Ballycotton 10. On a very good day for running, nice andmild over 2400 runners got to the start line. First home was SergivCiobanu of Clonliffe Harriers in a time of 49.36. First lady homewas Cork girl Lizzie Lee (of Leevale AC) in a time of 58.48. Asthere was a load of Youghal athletes too many to mention I justpicked out a few good results. Our fist athlete home was NoelCurtin finishing in the top 100 and breaking the hour mark in atime of 59.30. Also breaking the hour mark was Martin O'Brienin a time of 59.53. Unfortunately they just missed out on the top100 lucrative t-shirts. Our first lady home was Niamh Walsh in atime 105.43. Also well done to William O'Mahony whose completedhis 34th Ballycotton 10. I was trying make out his averagetime over the 34 years which is impressive but I gave up. So welldone to all the other athletes and the stewards on the day for a jobvery well done. On Sunday March the 13th under the Cork BHAArules you had the 5k Fota Island road race in Fota/Carrigtwohill.This race was always held up in the Mahon area and this is the firsttime it is getting held in Fota and they got a very good sunny day, results on the next issue. Our prestigious athlete of the month for February was a very closebetween a lot of athletes but the man who battled most for thisaward was Mossie Cahill. He mightn't have the performances ofthe month like other athletes but for his over all dedication andcommitment both on and off the road, his organisation in gettingathletes to races, people to training and encouraging other athletes. The next time I am in a race with you and I catch up with you Iwill give you your prize. Here are the upcoming fixtures:- On Thursday the 17th Marchat 11.00 am (Paddy's day) you have the Ballinhassig 4 mile roadrace in conjunction with the Rising Sun AC. On the followingSunday (20th March) also at 11.00am under Cork BHAA Rulesyou have the Janssen 4 mile road race in Little Island or as thoseof us working up there call it "the Island". On the 15th of April, the eveningswill be truly getting brighter when the first race of Ger Wileyseries will start with the Marine climb. Then on Sunday the 22ndof May don't forget the 10k Emer Casey road race in Youghal at1.30. This is a very important race to raise funds and highlightawareness of the early detection of ovarian cancer. Looking at thefacts there seems to be an 80% chance of curing this disease if theysucceed with early detection through their studies and there is onlya 15% chance of curing this cancer if it is not detected early as itgoes by it's name "the silent Killer". So if you were told you'dhave an 80% chance of winning the Lotto tomorrow everybodywould be out doing it and at the end of the day that's only money! So why not run, walk or jog on the 22nd of May and in doing sohelp this vital cause and help yourself by becoming more activeand if you enjoy it why not join our running club in preparation forthe race and stay with us and enjoy, training and some more racesduring the year.Be safe and be seen and watch the pot holes and remember thehibernation period is over for some of you - ye know who ye are!KILLEAGH/INCH PLAYGROUNDFUNDRAISERThe above committee are hosting a table quiz in theHalfway Bar on Friday, 25th March at 8pm.
