4WOMEN’S HEALTH SERVICESNorthfield Hospital now has three obstetrician/gynecologistsfrom Mayo Health System onstaff to address a full range of women’shealth issues.The women services team nowincludes: Deb Suppes, MD; AnnFriedmann, MD; and MichaelSeryakov, MD. Drs. Suppes,Friedmann and Seryakov see patientsat Cannon Valley Clinic, a part of theMayo Health System, 710 DivisionStreet, and perform surgeries anddeliver babies at Northfield Hospital.Dr. Suppes In addition, a fourth OB/GYN specialist,Melanie Dixon, MD, will beginwork at Cannon Valley Clinic inNorthfield in August.Obstetricians/gynecologists providecomprehensive care for women,including preventive healthcare, education,counseling, prenatal care, cancerscreening, sexual and contraceptiveguidance, routine and high-riskobstetrics, infertility, urinary incontinenceand gynecological surgeries.Dr. SeryakovMary Crow, vice president ofPatient Care Services, says she isdelighted to have the level of specialtycare these physicians provide availablehere at Northfield Hospital.“Women will experience a broaderand more complete range of medicalservices right here in their own community,”Crow says, “allowing morechoices for their care.”Dr. FriedmannDr. DixonExpanded women’s services availableDeb Suppes, MDDr. Suppes earned her medicaldegree at Mayo Medical School inRochester. She completed a residencythrough the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Integrated Residency inObstetrics/Gynecology and Women’sHealth. Dr. Suppes has a specialinterest in working with teenagers.“I try to make a teen’s first visit tothe gynecologist a good experience,”says Dr. Suppes. “If a teen has a positiveexperience, she is more likely toschedule regular exams throughouther lifetime.”Michael Seryakov, MDMichael Seryakov, MD, is board certified inobstetrics and gynecology. He received his medicaldegree from the Medical Institute of Leningrad andcompleted his residency at the Riverside RegionalMedical Center in Newport News, Va. Prior tojoining Cannon Valley Clinic, he was in privatepractice in Fridley, Mn. Dr. Seryakov is a native ofRussia. He received his United States citizenship in1991.Ann Friedmann, MDAnn Friedmann, MD, a board certified obstetrician/gynecologistand certified lactation consultant,provides health care to women of all ages,including prenatal care, labor and birth, and generalgynecologic care.Dr. Friedmann received her medical degreefrom the University of Minnesota, and completedher residency and internship at Madigan ArmyMedical Center in Fort Lewis, Washington. Mostrecently, Dr. Friedmann, a major in the UnitedStates Army, was stationed in Tuzla, Bosnia whereshe served as a gynecologist and general surgeonfor troops. Dr. Friedmann is also an InternationalBoard Certified Lactation Consultant with specializedtraining and experience in helping womenbreastfeed successfully.Melanie Dixon, MDMelanie Dixon, MD, received her medicaldegree from the University of North Carolina. Sheis currently completing her residency as chief residentof obstetrics and gynecology at Mayo Clinic,Rochester. Dr. Dixon will join Cannon ValleyClinic in August of this year.
WOMEN’S HEALTH SERVICESState-of-the-art biopsies performed hereA minimally invasive, state-of-the-art biopsyprocedure is now being used as part of surgicaltreatment for breast cancer at Northfield Hospital.Called sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLB), it isa surgical procedure that has been used for manyyears at larger treatment centers and has proven tobe a reliable method in determining if breast cancerhas spread to the lymph nodes that runthrough the armpit.“WE ARE ABLE TO DO THISRIGHT HERE IN THECOMMUNITY. THIS IS AHUGE BENEFIT TO OURBREAST CANCER PATIENTS.”– DAVID RAINIERO, MD,GENERAL SURGEON,NORTHFIELD HOSPITALIn the past,patients onlyhad the optionsof removing aseries of lymphnodes for dissectionor amodified radicalmastectomy toidentify if thecancer hadspread.According to David Rainiero, MD, a general surgeonat Northfield Hospital, these procedures havea higher risk of side effects and complicationswhen compared to SLB. Patients often wouldexperience shoulder weakness or numbness fromnerve injury, wound infections, and fluid collections.SLB uses a smaller incision and causes lesspost-operative pain, leading to shorter hospitalstays and recovery periods, Dr. Rainiero says.Most patients who are candidates for SLB andlumpectomy can be discharged from the hospitalthe same day. Furthermore, the sentinel lymphnode can be more closely inspected by the pathologistwho would otherwise have to analyze 10-20lymph nodes for cancer spread.“In the past, we have had to perform this procedureat a Twin Cities hospital,” says Dr. Rainiero,“but now that we have acquired the necessaryequipment, we are able to do this right here in thecommunity. This is a huge benefit to our breastcancer patients.”The procedure involves injecting both a lowlevel radioactive tracer and a blue dye into thebreast right before surgery. A gamma probe, similarto a Geiger counter, is then used to localize thesentinel node, the node which is first in line tocollect cancer cells which may have spread fromthe tumor. The surgeon then makes a small incisionand looks for blue lymph vessels leading tothe blue and “hot” node.A frozen biopsy can then be performed whilethe surgeon removes the tumor (lumpectomy) orthe breast (simple mastectomy). If no cancer isdetected in the lymph node, no further surgeryneeds to be done. If there is cancer in the node,then an axillary lymph node dissection is completed.Not all patients are candidates for this procedure,says Dr. Rainiero. Sometimes a sentinelnode, which is initially negative on a frozen biopsycan hold small amounts of cancer which can onlybe seen on final pathological analysis. In rare circumstances,a lymph node other than the negativesentinel node will harbor cancer.However, the benefits –accurate diagnosis of cancerspread, fewer complications,shorter hospitalizationand faster recovery– outweigh thepotential drawbacks.David Rainiero, MD, ageneral surgeon atNorthfield Hospital, usesthe new gamma probeto provide a broaderrange of cancer treatmenthere in Northfield.5
