VIII. Standard 3:Accurate Research andSelection of Up-to-dateInformationAccurate COI is obtained and corroborated from various sources, with due attention to find and filter the relevant and up-to-dateinformation from the sources chosen, avoiding the distortion ofthe content. The research process should reflect high professionalstandards and be free of any bias or pre-conception.While the previous standard of reliability deals with the selection and analysis of sources, accuracy is about obtaining the relevant information from the selected sources (i.e. it isthe key quality standard of the research process itself). It is of common knowledge thatCOI research requires a certain ability to use the internet, as well as other communication, technical and methodological skills. Complementing these general requirements,European professional practice has established a more complex norm of accuracy 76 thatis based primarily on the principle of cross-checking or corroboration (from a varietyof sources), and on an unbiased selection of up-to-date information. Both EU law andnational practices reflect to a certain extent these requirements.VIII.1 Obtaining Objective, Impartial and Precise InformationVIII.1.1 LegislationArticle 8 (2) (b) of the Procedures Directive sets a rather general standard of preciseness, which can be interpreted in conjunction with the requirement of objectivity andimpartiality in Article 8 (2) (a):2. To that end, Member States shallensure that:(a) applications are examined and decisions are taken individually, objectively andimpartially;76See also IARLJ Checklist, Para. 21–2453
