— 280,000 inhabitants make Greater Turkuthe third largest metropolitan areain Finland.Turku’s transport authoritieshave set the standard with thisecological approach. We areall the more pleased that INITwas chosen as a long-termpartner for this undertaking.Dr. Gottfried Greschner,CEO init AG| INIT’s ID-based fare management solution will demonstratethe future of e-fare technology.concept that runs through 2030. This concept isbased on a long-term development plan drawnup by the Finnish Transport Ministry for asustainably improved mobility plan and lesscarbon dioxide emissions.ID-based fare managementFor Turku, INIT will implement a particularlyinnovative fare management system – with therevolutionary ID-based Ticketing. This meansthat all information is stored and managed inthe back office system – in real-time. The smartcard itself only contains a unique identificationnumber (ID). This solution allows for a flexibleand inexpensive use of various fare media(2D barcode, proximity card, etc.) and offers moreabuse protection in case of card loss. The backoffice system that will process and provideefficient sales management is INIT’sMOBILEvario. It also provides full multi-agencycapability and is individually configurable bythe agencies. At first, some 200 vehicles will be connected tothe system and fitted with the combined onboardcomputer and smart card reader,EVENDpc. In addition, the self-service terminal,PROXmobil, will be installed in the vehicles. Itallows a speedy check-in so passengers can boardmore quickly and waiting times can be cut.EVENDpc takes care of all e-fare and ITCSfunctions within the vehicle and guaranteescommunication with the head office.Real-time information about the trafficsituation, as well as on the position and conditionof individual vehicles, will allow dispatchers toreact quickly to unforeseen circumstances orbreakdowns. This information is also animportant precondition for providing passengerswith reliable real-time information on allchannels, such as wayside displays, over theInternet and on smart phones.INIT technology allows Turku to implement arevolutionary integrated e-fare and ITCS systemsupporting them to realize their future plans. The system will increase the quality of serviceand customer satisfaction, and it will support amore efficient ope ra tions control.|ContactJussi LaaksoTel. +358.50.3536922jlaakso@init-ka.deINITiative 1|2014 7
