Greetings from Annapolis! I
want to touch base with an
update of projects going on
in Beltsville and in District 21, and
also on some legislation and projects
I am working on this session.
Before I get too deep into the
report, let me invite you to my
first annual “Evening in Tuscany,”
an Italian-themed reception for the
community to be held in the Senate
Building on Monday, March 14,
from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. There will
be Italian music, Italian food, and
some great Italian desserts. I look
forward to the chance to meet you
in person. Call my office for more
details.
Now, on to business. There are
many exciting things coming out of
my office. Iʼm going to go through
as much as I can now and if there is
anything in here that you would like
any more information on, please
donʼt hesitate to call into the office.

By the fourth week of session,
four of my bills had already passed
through the Senate, which is really
exciting for so early in the session.
One of those bills was submitted
to help College Park create special
districts to benefit public safety to
enhance police, fire protection and
rescue services.
Another bill I am particularly
proud of would create a new felony
for assault on a law enforcement
officer. Iʼve been working on this
legislation for three sessions and
with the addition of Senate President
Mike Miller as the primary
sponsor, I am confident that we will
see it signed into law in the coming
weeks. Third timeʼs a charm!
I have a bill that may be of
LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE
WHY YOU MAY NEED IT!
You may need long-term care insurance to provide financial assistance when
you require two or more of the following:
• You can't feed yourself • You can't dress yourself • You experience incontinence
• You have difficulty bathing (daily toiletry) • You have trouble moving yourself
from your bed to a wheelchair.
Who will quit their job to take care of you?

particular interest to folks in Beltsville—one
based on technology
developed at the Beltsville Agricultural
Center. This bill would require
vehicles in the state vehicle fleet
that use diesel fuel to instead use
a blend of fuel that is at least 20%
biodiesel fuel to benefit the environment.
Biodiesel burns cleaner
than full diesel, and the state
should step up and set an example
for the rest of the state. This bill
is being heard in the Senate Education,
Health and Environmental
Affairs Committee on March 3rd at
1:00 p.m. and if you have any interest
in this legislation or testifying
for this bill, please give me a call.
Another piece of legislation I am
particularly fond of is a bond bill
to help restore and stabilize Paint
Branch Creek as it follows Route
1. The creek has eroded the parking
lots of businesses, and action
must be taken now. The 21st delegates
have agreed to file the bill
in the House and hope to see it pass
this session. Iʼve just started up
a coalition to “Save Paint Branch
Creek” and if you have any interest
in joining those efforts, please
let me know.
In addition to several important
bills on juvenile justice and
on drunk driving, I have a bill to
require the owners of apartment
buildings and complexes to provide
recycling facilities for their
residents, and another bill to use
video technology to present arrestees
to the district court commissioner
and allow our police to stay
on the street. For details on these

On the home front, the Governor
included sidewalks for a portion of
Powder Mill Road in his budget,
as part of a 23-million-dollar package
of projects for the 21st district.
Ammendale Road is moving forward
quickly, as is the widening
of Cherry Hill Road—residents are
getting offers from the State for the
strips of property the state needs to
widen the road. As you likely know,
the ICC is also marching forward, as
is the study of a roadway from the
beltway to the back of the University
of Marylandʼs Comcast Center
to help ease Route 1 traffic. Iʼve
also had fruitful discussions with
the administration concerning
moving Vansville Elementary up
in construction priority, and weʼll
be making an announcement on
the Beltsville/Laurel Senior Center
soon. All these stand as a testament
to the promises I made two and a
half years ago—Iʼve been working
tirelessly and Iʼm not easing up.
