�� Page 4 • The BELTSVILLE NEWS • MARCH 2005 Neighbors in the News Beltsville Students Make Dean’s List at Salisbury University Beltsville area students were recently named to the Deanʼs List at Salisbury University. They earned a 3.5 or better grade point average. Beltsville area students achieving the Deanʼs List were Natalie Day, Suzanne McArdle, Janet Reed, Lisa Robinson, and Gary Stewart. At Salisbury University some 6,800 students in 43 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs pursue liberal arts and professional degrees. U.S. News and World Report rates Salisbury University among the top 10 universities in the North. Morris Named to Dean’s List at Mount St. Mary’s University Erin C. Morris of Beltsville is among 394 students who achieved the honor of deanʼs list for the fall ʼ04 semester at Mount St. Maryʼs University, located in Emmitsburg, MD. Morris is a senior at the Mount and achieved this honor by maintaining a 3.4 or higher grade point average. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Kevin N. Morris. Mount St. Maryʼs, founded in 1808, is the second oldest Catholic University in America. Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary Names Officers for 2005 The Ladies Auxiliary to the Beltsville Volunteer Fire Department have elected and installed new officers for 2005. The current officers are: President Peggy Zembower, Vice President Pam Casagranda, Recording Secretary Nancy Moore, Corresponding Secretary Cathy Alexander, Treasurer Barbara Parsly, Chaplain Lois Hetz, and Historian Diana Conley. The Ladies are also pleased to report that eight Beltsville students received the following awards in the County Fire Prevention Poster Contest: Kindergarten 1st Place - Nicolette Nitis, St. Josephʼs School; 2nd Place - Jacob in Mrs. Fridieʼs Class, Beltsville Elementary School; 3rd Place - Jessica Ramos and Lisa Whitsett, Mrs. Sonja Festerling is pleased to announce the marriage of her son, John Peter Thompson, to Oksana Garashchenko of Penza, Russia. Oksana is the daughter of Viktor Ivanovich and Tatiana Ivanovna also from Penza, Russia. They were married on December 30, 2004. Warner to Wed Disabella Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth R. Warner of Beltsville, Maryland, announce the engagement of their son, Kenneth Jumper Warner to Nicole Disabella, daughter of Ms. Davadine Disabella, of Weston, Pa., and Mr. Nicholas Disabella, of Hazelton, Pa. The bride-to-be is a 1999 graduate of Hazelton Area High School and attended Penn State University. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Lena Ulshafer and the late Mr. Archie Ulshafer and Mrs. Rose Disabella and the late Mr. Peter Disabella. Ms. Disabella is a Real Estate Consultant for the firm of Cannon Management Company in Riverside, California. The prospective groom is a Beltsville Elementary School; Honorable Mention - Daniel Douglas, Beltsville Elementary School 2nd Grade 3rd Place - Erica Stevens, Beltsville Adventist School; Honorable Mention - Brittany Jones, Kenneth Jumper Warner and Davadine Disabella to wed in June. 1992 graduate of High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland, and a 1997 graduate of Penn State University and the University of Maastricht, The Netherlands, with degrees in International Business and Logistics. Mr. Warner is the grandson of the late John and Grace Timony and the late Kenneth and Charlotte Warner who resided in Freeland, Pennsylvania. Mr. Warner is the Facility Director of Jevic Transportationʼs new Southern California Facility. The couple reside in Corona, California, with their two-year old son, Kellen Jumper Warner. The wedding is planned for June 25, 2005, in St. Paulʼs Methodist Church, Drums, Pa., with the reception to follow at the historic Correale Grove in Drums, Pa. As I See It ... By Charlie Deegan, Metro Board member Metro is a huge public agency. It transports a million customers a day, by rail, bus and paratransit services. In such a big agency, sometimes the customerʼs voice is lost. So I was happy to hear that the incoming Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will continue to reach out to our customers. On February 17, Dana Kauffman of Fairfax County took the gavel for the first time as the new chairman. His emphasis during his one-year term will be accountability and transparency of the agency. Customer-focused changes announced by Mr. Kauffman included: • Establishing Metroʼs first-ever ʻRiders Advisory Committee,ʼ to provide regular, formal feedback from customers who use our services. • Beginning in April, implementing a public comment period at the start of each monthly Board meeting. This will allow Metroʼs top managers and the Board of Directors to hear from customers directly. • Holding three town hall meetings between the public and the Board of Directors, to be held in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Virginia. • Starting in June, broadcasting the monthly Board meetings live over the Internet. • Making Board materials avail- Beltsville Briefs Continued from page 1 and a variety of household goods. Public Speaking Course Offered The Crown of Laurel Toastmasters Club is offering a public speaking course for eight consecutive Tuesday nights starting on March 8 and concluding on April 26, 2005. The classes will be held from 7:00-9:00 p.m. each evening. Each participant will receive expert instruction in 10 areas of communications skills, a course manual, and free refreshments. In his February 17 remarks, Mr. Kauffman also endorsed the “back to basics” management approach taken by General Manager Richard White to address Metroʼs service problems. Mr. Kauffmanʼs initiatives build on some of those begun last year by my Maryland colleague, Bob Smith, when he chaired the Board. As chairman, Mr. Smith held the first-ever town hall meeting of the Board of Directors. He also called for revising WMATAʼs records policy to make it consistent with the Freedom of Information Act. Mr. Kauffman is building on those successes. I applaud Mr. Kauffmanʼs no-nonsense agenda, and the efforts of Mr. Smith before him. MNCP Police Accepting Applications The Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Prince George's and Montgomery County Divisions, are currently accepting applications for lateral and entry-level law enforcement officers. The next test date for applicants is Friday, April 1, 2005. To qualify, an applicant must be a United States citizen, 21 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED, and possess a valid driver's license. The starting salary is $38,524. The Park Police offer excellent health benefits, tuition assistance and a take home vehicle program. Open Meeting of EMERGE By Margaret Stanton EMERGE, the Mental Health Ministry of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, is sponsoring an educational meeting open to the community on Monday, March 7 from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in Room 24- 26 of the Education Building. The more opportunities to hear from our customers. I am also a firm proponent of making Metro a more transparent public agency - one that takes its actions openly, and holds itself accountable for those actions. Sunshine makes any agency healthier. Iʼd rather give people the facts instead of limiting information made available to the public out of excessive concern about spin or public relations. In my judgment, an informed public will have more confidence both in the Metro system itself and in the Board's decision-making process. Again, I applaud Mr. Kauffman for his agenda and look forward to working with him. Loss in the Metro family On Valentineʼs Day, WMATA lost one of its employees in a senseless crime. Robert Gail, 41, of Lanham, had been a WMATA bus driver for 10 years. At the time of his death, he drove the number 70 route, carrying passengers along Georgia Avenue from Southwest Washington to Silver Spring. He was a husband and father of three. He was also a part-time youth basketball coach. On February 14 th , as he was on his way to a practice at the New Carrollton Boys and Girls Club, he was shot and killed, allegedly after his car was struck by two carjackers on a crime spree, according to media and police reports. His coworkers at Metro and the customers on his route mourn his passing. Please keep his family in your prayers. topic of the meeting will be "Coping with Depression - and Bipolar Disorder." The author describes her child's experience at a co-op preschool, where she "painted, heard stories, and ate cookies for the sum total of $150 a month." She calls for more institutions like this in our country, a place where busy mothers can get quality parttime day care.
