The German-American
Heritage Foundation of
the USA® (GAHF) is an
educational organization
and serves as the national
umbrella organization in
which German-Americans
work together on vital issues
of common concern and
promote their heritage.
Its mission is to preserve
and promote the heritage
of Americans of Germanspeaking
ancestry and to
establish the “German-
American Heritage
Center of the USA”
in Washington, DC.
The organization was founded
in 1977 and chartered in 1978
in Pennsylvania as the “United
German-American Committee
of the USA, Inc.”. It is a
nonprofit, non-partisan 501(c)
(3) organization. In 2006, it
started doing business as the
“German-American Heritage
Foundation of the USA®”.
Few people
have blended
so completely
into the
multicultural
tapestry
oF american
society and
yet have made
such singular
economic,
political,
social,
scientiFic
and cultural
contributions
to the growth
and success oF
these united
states as have
americans
oF german
extraction.

The GAHF will:
• establish the German-
American Heritage Center
as the national institution for
German-Amercan heritage
and culture
• increase public knowledge
about the rich heritage of
all Americans of Germanspeaking
descent
• educate the American
public about the historical
contributions of German-
Americans to growth and
society of the United States
• promote the German
language and culture
• Cultivate German-American
friendship and cooperation
• Support cooperative
efforts among all German-
Americans in the United
States
• Develop a broader
understanding and deeper
knowledge about the
Germany of today and its
role in transatlantic relations
and on the world stage
THE GERMAN-AMERICAN
HERITAGE CENTER OF THE USA
The German-American
Heritage Center with its
exhibition hall will be centrally
located in our nation’s
capital. Built in 1888 by John
Hockemeyer, a German
immigrant who became a
successful merchant, this
townhouse is part of the Penn
Quarter, a historic settlement
of Germans in Washington.
Located at 719 6th Street NW,
the Center is in close proximity
to the National Archives, the
National Portrait Gallery, the
Newseum, the Goethe Institut,
the Spy Museum and right
across the street from the
Verizon Center, Washington’s
prime venue for sports and
entertainment
The German-American
Heritage Center intends to
make “our history” more
readily available to broader
audiences and easy to
comprehend for all ages.
Admission to the Center
and its activities will be free
of charge to make it more
accessible to the general
public.
In addition to the exhibits and
installations, there will also be
an auditorium with seating for
up to 70 people for lectures,
multimedia presentations and
small conferences.
This Center will be partnering
with other museums and
institutions, such as the
“Auswandererhaus” in
Bremerhaven, the “Ballinstadt”
in Hamburg, the German
National Tourist Office in New
York, the German Information
Center in Washington, and
Deutsche Welle Radio and TV
in Bonn and Berlin, Germany.
