The <strong>German</strong>-<strong>American</strong><br />
<strong>Heritage</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> of<br />
<strong>the</strong> USA® (GAHF) is an<br />
educational organization<br />
and serves as <strong>the</strong> national<br />
umbrella organization in<br />
which <strong>German</strong>-<strong>American</strong>s<br />
work toge<strong>the</strong>r on vital issues<br />
of common concern and<br />
promote <strong>the</strong>ir heritage.<br />
Its mission is to preserve<br />
and promote <strong>the</strong> heritage<br />
of <strong>American</strong>s of <strong>German</strong>speaking<br />
ancestry and to<br />
establish <strong>the</strong> “<strong>German</strong>-<br />
<strong>American</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong><br />
Center of <strong>the</strong> USA”<br />
in Washington, DC.<br />
The organization was founded<br />
in 1977 and chartered in 1978<br />
in Pennsylvania as <strong>the</strong> “United<br />
<strong>German</strong>-<strong>American</strong> Committee<br />
of <strong>the</strong> USA, Inc.”. It is a<br />
nonprofit, non-partisan 501(c)<br />
(3) organization. In 2006, it<br />
started doing business as <strong>the</strong><br />
“<strong>German</strong>-<strong>American</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong><br />
<strong>Foundation</strong> of <strong>the</strong> USA®”.<br />

have blended<br />
so completely<br />
into <strong>the</strong><br />
multicultural<br />
tapestry<br />
oF american<br />
society and<br />
yet have made<br />
such singular<br />
economic,<br />
political,<br />
social,<br />
scientiFic<br />
and cultural<br />

to <strong>the</strong> growth<br />

states as have<br />

• increase public knowledge<br />
about <strong>the</strong> rich heritage of<br />
all <strong>American</strong>s of <strong>German</strong>speaking<br />

• educate <strong>the</strong> <strong>American</strong><br />
public about <strong>the</strong> historical<br />
contributions of <strong>German</strong>-<br />
<strong>American</strong>s to growth and<br />
society of <strong>the</strong> United States<br />
• promote <strong>the</strong> <strong>German</strong><br />
language and culture<br />
• Cultivate <strong>German</strong>-<strong>American</strong><br />
friendship and cooperation<br />
• Support cooperative<br />
efforts among all <strong>German</strong>-<br />
<strong>American</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> United<br />

• Develop a broader<br />
understanding and deeper<br />
knowledge about <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>German</strong>y of today and its<br />

THE GERMAN-AMERICAN<br />
HERITAGE CENTER OF THE USA <br />
The <strong>German</strong>-<strong>American</strong><br />
<strong>Heritage</strong> Center with its<br />
exhibition hall will be centrally<br />
located in our nation’s<br />
capital. Built in 1888 by John<br />
Hockemeyer, a <strong>German</strong><br />
immigrant who became a<br />
successful merchant, this<br />
townhouse is part of <strong>the</strong> Penn<br />
Quarter, a historic settlement<br />
of <strong>German</strong>s in Washington.<br />
Located at 719 6th Street NW,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Center is in close proximity<br />
to <strong>the</strong> National Archives, <strong>the</strong><br />
National Portrait Gallery, <strong>the</strong><br />
Newseum, <strong>the</strong> Goe<strong>the</strong> Institut,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Spy Museum and right<br />
across <strong>the</strong> street from <strong>the</strong><br />
Verizon Center, Washington’s<br />
prime venue for sports and<br />
entertainment<br />
The <strong>German</strong>-<strong>American</strong><br />
<strong>Heritage</strong> Center intends to<br />
make “our history” more<br />
readily available to broader<br />
audiences and easy to<br />
comprehend for all ages.<br />
Admission to <strong>the</strong> Center<br />
and its activities will be free<br />
of charge to make it more<br />
accessible to <strong>the</strong> general<br />
public.<br />
In addition to <strong>the</strong> exhibits and<br />
installations, <strong>the</strong>re will also be<br />
an auditorium with seating for<br />
up to 70 people for lectures,<br />
multimedia presentations and<br />
small conferences.<br />
This Center will be partnering<br />
with o<strong>the</strong>r museums and<br />
institutions, such as <strong>the</strong><br />
“Auswandererhaus” in<br />
Bremerhaven, <strong>the</strong> “Ballinstadt”<br />
in Hamburg, <strong>the</strong> <strong>German</strong><br />
National Tourist Office in New<br />
York, <strong>the</strong> <strong>German</strong> Information<br />
Center in Washington, and<br />
Deutsche Welle Radio and TV<br />
in Bonn and Berlin, <strong>German</strong>y.<br />
