SPORTBasketballBasketball reportThe year 2006 will be remembered for the fixtureagainst the Old Boys which we won 60-45; the hometriangular held between ourselves, AISJ and St Johnsfor the first time; the KES/Sacred Heart Festival held atWits University which included the U14, U15, U16 and1st team from Durban High School and the successfulinstallation of the electronic scoreboard. All of these achievements go a long way in depictingbasketball as the sport of choice for minority groups atthe school and surely we must stop being treated as asecond-class sport. The year should be forgotten for the results producedby the 1 st Team but in retrospect it has been a characterbuildingseason. They say you learn more from defeatthan you do from victory. Well, in that sense, we alllearnt a lot. The 1st Team played 28 games, won 14 andlost 14. I would like to thank all our coaches and refereesfor the commitment given (some more than others) andtheir dedication to the boys and the school.Ofentse ‘Loxx’ Molonyama was an inspiring captainwho often led from the front; however, talking doesnot always produce results. Sometimes leaders need tolead by example. Sbu Mthombeni was playing in the1st Team for the third consecutive year and served asvice-captain. I thank them both for a job well done. The Johannesburg League has been officially namedthe Rainbow Basketball League (RBL) as coaches andadministrators begin to formalise structures. Results inthe first term are as follows:The U14As played 11, won 6, lost 5. This includedfamous victories against the American School and StJohns. The U14Bs played 3, won 2 and lost 1. The U15Asplayed 8, won 4 and lost 4. Their important victorieswere over Jeppe, DHS and Sacred Heart but they losttwice to St benedicts. The U15Bs played and won 1against KES. The U16As played 10, won 5 and lost5. Some memorable wins were against the AmericanSchool, St Johns and KES whereas they suffered defeatat the hands of Bishop Bavin, St Albans and DHS. The2nds played and lost 1.In the RBL there are no easy games and youundermine your opponent at your peril. The 8 th annual AISJ Tournament took place andseems to be growing from year to year. Once again our1st Team beat Sacred Heart, ISSA and Waterford beforesuccumbing to AISJ in the semi-final 39–55. AISJ wenton to win it for the second consecutive year. PHSGsuccessfully defended their girls’ title for the secondyear as well. The RBL prepared us for the Pretoria Schools’Basketball League and the semi-final results in the Adivision were: PBHS U14A beat The Glen U14A 27-11, the PBHS U16A beat St Albans U16B 44-24 and theKefilwe Ndala going in for the basketPBHS 1st Team beat The Glen 1st Team 50-30. The finalswere held the following day on 3 June at the St Mary’sDSG courts. The PBHS U14A beat St Albans U14A 25-20 to defend their title. The U16A side lost to St AlbansU16A 13-25 and the PBHS 1st Team lost to St Albans 1stTeam 19-30 in a pulsating final. On a positive note our U16Bs won the B Divisionfinal by beating Willowridge U16A and the PBHS 2ndnarrowly lost to Clapham 1st Team, 49-36, in the openB Division final. The First Team capped the season by participating inthe ESPN Tuks Basketball tournament for high schools. This year also witness the launch of our website www.schoolbasketball.co.za.The following awards were made at the Pretoria League finals.U14 All-Stars: H Mhlongo, N Stevens1U14 MVP: B NtsalubaU16 All-Stars: P Liao, C AshworthU19 All-Stars: M Cross, T MatsebulaThe following boys were selected for District, Provincial andNational teams during the course of the year.U15 District: C Ashworth, F Mabolo, L Shakung, BTsabadi, A ZawadaU17 District T Matsebula, W Jumat, S BiyamaU17 Gauteng: T Matsebula, W JumatU17 SA Schools: T MatsebulaU18 District: S Makgamatha, T Matsebula,,W Jumat, S Magagula, B TheronU16 Gauteng: W JumatColour AwardsHalf Colours: O Molonyama (re-award),R Maswanganye, K Ditsebe,S Biyana, T Motombothi, G Semyalo, BTheron, M CrossFull Colours: T Matsebula (re-award), W Jumat,S Mthombeni, S MakgamathaServiceHalf Colours (Basketball):A MolefeTim IrakaMaster-in-Charge BasketballResults 4 th TermOur 1st Team won 5 out of 6 games in the fourth term146The PretorianThis page is sponsored by the Ntsaluba Family

BasketballU16B BasketballThe U16B was, without doubt, the best team Boys Highfielded this year as they won the Pretoria league. If theycontinue to play at the same level next year, they willremain the champions. The MVP was Shakur, the best shooter Brian and thebest defender was Chris but these three would neverhave achieved the results they did were it not for theunstinting support of the rest of the team.Donald Malinga, CoachSPORTThando Matsebula on his way back on defence and Sbusiso Mthombeniapply8ing pressure of the GlenThando Matsebula going up strong for two points, while SbusisoMthombeni looking onReinard Schmidt rising over the defence of St AlbansDavid Roebuck on the fast breakBjorn Theron, Karabo Ditsebe, Sbusiso Magagula and SiyabongaBiyana putting in a team effort to secure the possessionThis page is sponsored by the Booth FamilyThe Pretorian 147

BasketballSPORTUnder 14 BasketballThe trials were attended by a large number of veryenthusiastic Form 1 pupils and an equally largenumber of boys who had no intention of playingbasketball. None of the boys had any experienceof playing matches but a number consideredthemselves experts because they had played somestreet ball. On the first Saturday we held an informalInter-House Basketball Tournament which waswon by Abernethy House. At this tournament thenucleus of the teams which were to represent theschool began to emerge. We had only one formal practice before the firstscheduled match, which was not played due to thenon arrival of the opposition. The first terms resultswere a mixed bag. We had a very tall team anddominated under the basket but our inexperiencedplayers could not score on a regular basis and weseldom reached 20 points. We had wins against StJohns, Jeppe and St Peters andsuffered heavy losses againstSt Albans and Bishop Bavin. An under-strength teamcompeted in a tournamentat the indoor courts at WitsUniversity and was soundlybeaten by St Benedicts andlost narrowly in extra timeto eventual winners, DurbanHigh School. We manageda win against Sacred HeartCollege. The followingweek we played against StBenedicts and had a decisivewin. This was the turningpoint for the team whichsubsequently went throughthe rest of the year with 100%success.In the second term weThe team worked hard during the third term eventhough there were no matches. The players honedtheir skills and by the fourth term were playing withconfidence. There were big wins against St Stithians(41 B19), St Albans (49 B 20), St Benedicts (38 B 13),St Johns (31 B 8), Jeppe (68 B 6), Bishop Bavin (33 B19) and King Edward (30 B 20).Nikita Stevens in Form 2 was the only playerwith experience at the start of the year and scoredmost of our points in the first term and played avital role in winning the Pretoria League. Howeverin the third and fourth term he expressed a wishto play with his peers in the under 15 team andwas released. Bula Ntsaluba became the star of theteam. He developed good ball handling skills, a finedefence, a strong pass and a reliable lay up, but itwas his ability to find his team mates in space thattransformed the team. Hlangi Mhlongo became astrong aggressive player whowas generally brought on afterthe opposition had been lulledinto a false sense of security tochange the pace of the game. Our tall players continued toimprove their co-ordination andthere is a promising future inthe game for D Tshimbombo, MNgwato, D Mjo and A Mosito. TK Maubane was our all rounderwho was prepared to play in anyposition and successfully did so.Z Petane held the key position atcentre throughout the year andL Nteta fitted in as reserve forcentre and shooting. Bula wasnamed as Most Valuable Playerin the Pretoria League andNikita and Hlangi were namedas two of the five All Stars.were involved in the PretoriaLeague. The team won all‘Shorty’ Mathlotse bringing up the ball The B team had a successfulyear but few schools had Bits pool games rather easily and progressed to thesemi-finals as group winners. After a comfortablewin against Willow Ridge we progressed to the finalagainst a St Albans team which had beaten us by 25points earlier in the year. St Albans started well andearned an early lead of 8 points. The team settleddown and whittled away at the lead and the teamswent into half time at 12 B12. Boys High dominatedteams so we often ended up playing otherschools A teams. The team won all its games in term1 but lost narrowly to St Albans, Glen and WillowRidge A teams in the Pretoria League. In the thirdterm we had wins against St Stithians, St Albans, StBenedicts and KES B teams and against Jeppe A andsuffered the only loss to Bishop Bavin A by 13 B 19.It has been a great pleasure to coach and be associatedthe third and fourth quarters and built up an with such a dedicated group of Basketball playersunassailable lead. In the last few minutes we had theluxury of playing our second string and St Albansmanaged to fight back. Final score 25 B 20and I look forward to continuing the association atUnder 15 level in 2007.Dave Jordan, Coach148The PretorianThis page is sponsored by the Webber Family
