Awards

Journalism Award
This award is presented to an individual who writes
about engineering topics, particularly civil
engineering, in a manner that benefits the profession.
This award is presented to Michael B. Farrell, the
technology reporter for the business section of The
Boston Globe, for his article, “Looking ahead,
preschools add tech to the curriculum”. This article
takes a first-hand look into local early childhood
education classrooms, which are introducing the
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)
subjects to students as young as three-years-old. By
examining this topic Michael helped publicize the
nation-wide effort to put a greater emphasis on the
STEM subjects and better prepare graduates to
compete in the workforce, and to consider those
subjects for future careers.

Pre-College Educator Award
This newly created award is presented to a member
of the K-12 education community who integrates
engineering topics, particularly civil engineering, in a
manner that benefits the profession and may
promote students to pursue an engineering career.
This award is presented to Alexandra Montes
McNeil, principal of Mario Umana Academy (K-8), for
her relentless commitment to bringing knowledge,
opportunities, and inspiration to students, giving them
the tools to become future leaders and thinkers. In
Alexandra’s own words, “At the Umana, the
expectation is that all students – regardless of
learning or language barriers – will succeed
academically and socially.” Principal Montes McNeil
backs up such statements with actions, and makes
great use of all available resources including the
BSCES-sponsored Future City Competition.
