John F. Fish is the Chairman and Chief Executive<br />
Officer of Suffolk Construction Company, Inc. He is<br />
responsible for providing the vision and strategic<br />
direction of the company, maintaining and<br />
reinforcing the corporate culture, leading the<br />
national executive and management teams, and<br />
overseeing decisions regarding the organization’s<br />
capital expenditures. Under Mr. Fish’s leadership,<br />
Suffolk has grown into one of the most successful<br />
privately-held general building contractors in the<br />
country. With $1.7 billion in annual revenue, Suffolk<br />
is currently ranked #29 in the nation by Engineering<br />
News Record, and is the largest builder in New<br />
England.<br />
In addition to leading Suffolk, Mr. Fish also serves on<br />
a number of Boards committed to the business<br />
agendas of the City of Boston and the State of<br />
Massachusetts. He has also served on many boards<br />
and executive committees to support important<br />
community, environmental and social organizations.<br />
As a result of his community leadership and<br />
involvement, Mr. Fish has received numerous awards<br />
including the 2011 “Most Admired CEO” and the<br />
2011 “Power 50” Most Influential Bostonians from<br />
the Boston Business Journal, the "New Englander of<br />
the Year Award" from the New England Council and a<br />
special Public Service Award from the National<br />
Association of Industrial and Office Properties.

Large Employer Recognition Award<br />
This award is presented to an organization with<br />
more than 50 employees that encourages its<br />
engineers to actively participate in ASCE and <strong>BSCES</strong><br />
activities; allow engineers time off to attend Society<br />
meetings and seminars; support and encourage<br />
technical and professional growth; encourage<br />
engineers to prepare articles for publication in<br />
Society professional and technical journals; and,<br />
assist in the payment of Society dues.<br />
This award is presented to CDM Smith. This global<br />
consulting, engineering, construction, and<br />
operations firm is a strong supporter of ASCE and<br />
<strong>BSCES</strong> paying 100% of the annual dues for the 57<br />
civil engineers in its Cambridge headquarters who<br />
are members of both organizations. CDM Smith is<br />
one of <strong>BSCES</strong>’ 10 Corporate Sponsors whose<br />
financial support enables the award winning <strong>BSCES</strong><br />
member newsletter, <strong>BSCES</strong>News to be selfsustaining.<br />
Following the firm’s example, many of<br />
the engineers from CDM Smith have become active<br />
volunteer members of <strong>BSCES</strong> serving on the<br />
committees which manage the society’s technical<br />

President’s and Special Service <strong>Awards</strong><br />
These awards are presented at the discretion of the<br />
President to Section Members for their contributions<br />
to the engineering profession and especially to the<br />
Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/ASCE.<br />

Small Employer Recognition Award<br />
This award is presented to an organization with less<br />
than 50 employees that encourages its engineers to<br />
actively participate in ASCE and <strong>BSCES</strong> activities;<br />
allow engineers time off to attend Society meetings<br />
and seminars; support and encourage technical and<br />
professional growth; encourage engineers to prepare<br />
articles for publication in Society professional and<br />
technical journals; and, assist in the payment of<br />
Society dues.<br />
This award is being presented to Nobis Engineering,<br />
Inc. Five of the eight civil engineers who work for<br />
this employee-owned multi-disciplinary consulting<br />
firm are members of <strong>BSCES</strong>. The company pays 100%<br />
of their ASCE and <strong>BSCES</strong> dues and allows them time<br />
to attend an average of three professional<br />
development training programs per year. Nobis<br />
Engineering employees are also active volunteer<br />
members of <strong>BSCES</strong> with two employees serving as<br />
technical group chairs and members of the 2011-<br />
<strong>2012</strong> <strong>BSCES</strong> Board of Government.

Technical Group Award<br />
This award is presented for original papers which<br />
have been presented at a Technical Group meeting or<br />
for papers that were submitted to a Technical Group<br />
for review and recommended for publication by its<br />
Executive Committee. This award is open to all <strong>BSCES</strong><br />
members.<br />
This award is presented to William P. Levy, PE,<br />
program manager at Massachusetts Water Resources<br />
Authority, for his paper entitled, “North Dorchester<br />
Bay CSO Storage Tunnel, Boston, MA, Risks,<br />
Response, and Rewards”. Bill was the first ever<br />
geotechnical engineer hired by MWRA and has<br />
provided engineering expertise and guidance for<br />
most of the MWRA’s major tunnel projects. Such was<br />
the case for the Dorchester Bay CSO Storage Tunnel<br />
project that was described in his <strong>2012</strong> Ernest A.<br />
Herzog Award winning paper, which he presented<br />
during The Ralph Salvucci Online Bridge Contest<br />
<strong>Awards</strong> Celebration the past May.<br />
�<br />
Younger Member Award<br />
This award is intended to recognize a member, 35<br />
years of age or less on February 1 in the year of the<br />
award, who has made an outstanding contribution to<br />
the society.<br />
This award is presented to Michelle A. Jose, engineer,<br />
GPI/Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., for her tireless efforts<br />
in support of the <strong>BSCES</strong> Public Awareness & Outreach<br />
Committee and Infrastructure Group. During 2011-<br />
<strong>2012</strong> Michelle assumed leadership roles in both<br />
groups serving as vice chair of the former and chair of<br />
the latter. In these roles her efforts are typically huge<br />
undertakings of great benefit to the civil engineering<br />
profession and the community in which we live.<br />

Katherine P. Craven<br />

University of Massachusetts Building Authority<br />
(Former Executive Director, Massachusetts School<br />
Building Authority)<br />
As the Executive Director of the Massachusetts<br />
School Building Authority, and now the University of<br />
Massachusetts Building Authority, Ms. Craven has<br />
played a key role in the design and construction of<br />
billions of dollars of school construction in<br />
Massachusetts. Ms. Craven has been instrumental<br />
in developing and implementing capital programs<br />
that have accelerated, and reduced the cost of<br />
fixing Massachusetts’ deteriorating schools. In her<br />
various roles, she has worked closely with every<br />
aspect of the design and construction industry, and<br />
has been a true leader in this industry.<br />

Luisa M. Paiewonsky<br />
Manager, Safety Operations Program<br />
Volpe National Transportation Systems Center<br />
(Former MassDOT Highway Division Administrator)<br />
As a career public servant, Ms. Paiewonsky has<br />
spent her professional life working for state, and<br />
federal transportation agencies. She was the last<br />
Commissioner of the Mass Highway Department,<br />
and the first Administrator of the Highway Division<br />
of Mass DOT. Ms. Paiewonsky was responsible for<br />
over 10,000 miles of roadways, and 5,000 bridges in<br />
the commonwealth, as well as a staff of hundreds of<br />
engineers, planners, and construction professionals<br />
tasked with the delivery of the largest annual<br />
construction programs in state history. Luisa is a<br />
consummate leader, professional, and public<br />
servant, and has been a true partner to design and<br />
construction professionals in Massachusetts.

Citizen Engineer of the Year Award<br />
This award is presented to a <strong>BSCES</strong> member or<br />
registered professional engineer for outstanding<br />
public involvement in local or national legislation,<br />
education at all levels, non-profit volunteer<br />
organizations, community activities and similar<br />
activities improving the image of ASCE, <strong>BSCES</strong> and<br />
civil engineering.<br />
This award is presented to Melissa M. Carter, PE,<br />
principal engineer, MWH Global, Inc., for leading the<br />
effort to establish the <strong>BSCES</strong> Committee on<br />
Sustainability. While serving as a member of the<br />
Government Affairs &Professional Practice<br />
Committee, Melissa was actively involved with green<br />
energy, and sustainability issues leading the effort to<br />
establish this new <strong>BSCES</strong> committee, which will focus<br />
on sustainable development and engineering in<br />
Massachusetts. In doing so, she has advanced ASCE’s<br />
sustainability vision and brought it to the local level.<br />

Lestor Gaynor Award<br />
This award is presented to a <strong>BSCES</strong> member or<br />
registered professional engineer for part-time<br />
elected or appointed service as a city or town official,<br />
whose reimbursement for this service has not been<br />
more than an honorarium.<br />

This award is presented to Ellen Nestervich, president<br />
of LN Enterprise, for her distinguished service as a<br />
long-time member of the Boxford Planning Board.<br />
During her 19 years on the Board, she has taken on<br />
various roles, including chair of its Subdivision<br />
Committee. She is currently the Board’s clerk. While<br />
on the Board, Ellen presented to voters at Town<br />
Meetings more than 20 roads for acceptance. She also<br />
developed several policies including the initial town<br />
policy for “Acquisition of Land for Municipal Use”.<br />

Journalism Award<br />
This award is presented to an individual who writes<br />
about engineering topics, particularly civil<br />
engineering, in a manner that benefits the profession.<br />
This award is presented to Michael B. Farrell, the<br />
technology reporter for the business section of The<br />
Boston Globe, for his article, “Looking ahead,<br />
preschools add tech to the curriculum”. This article<br />
takes a first-hand look into local early childhood<br />
education classrooms, which are introducing the<br />
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)<br />
subjects to students as young as three-years-old. By<br />
examining this topic Michael helped publicize the<br />
nation-wide effort to put a greater emphasis on the<br />
STEM subjects and better prepare graduates to<br />
compete in the workforce, and to consider those<br />
subjects for future careers.<br />

Pre-College Educator Award<br />
This newly created award is presented to a member<br />
of the K-12 education community who integrates<br />
engineering topics, particularly civil engineering, in a<br />
manner that benefits the profession and may<br />
promote students to pursue an engineering career.<br />
This award is presented to Alexandra Montes<br />
McNeil, principal of Mario Umana Academy (K-8), for<br />
her relentless commitment to bringing knowledge,<br />
opportunities, and inspiration to students, giving them<br />
the tools to become future leaders and thinkers. In<br />
Alexandra’s own words, “At the Umana, the<br />
expectation is that all students – regardless of<br />
learning or language barriers – will succeed<br />
academically and socially.” Principal Montes McNeil<br />
backs up such statements with actions, and makes<br />
great use of all available resources including the<br />
<strong>BSCES</strong>-sponsored Future City Competition.
