Thephotographs were housed in archival folders and placed with <strong>the</strong> photographcollection. Meghan Lee completed <strong>the</strong> arrangement of <strong>the</strong> collection andproceeded to review and describe <strong>the</strong> collection, which was completed in 2005.4


BiographyHarry Robbins (“Bob”) <strong>Haldeman</strong>, <strong>the</strong> son of a successful businessman, was bornin Los Angeles, Cali<strong>for</strong>nia, on October 27th, 1926. He attended <strong>the</strong> University ofRedlands and <strong>the</strong> University of Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Cali<strong>for</strong>nia. During World War II, heserved in <strong>the</strong> Naval Reserve and completed his education at <strong>the</strong> University ofCali<strong>for</strong>nia at Los Angeles, where he graduated in 1948 with a degree in businessadministration.In 1949 Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> joined <strong>the</strong> J. Walter Thompson advertising agency in NewYork. Ten yeas later he was promoted to <strong>the</strong> post of vice president and managerof <strong>the</strong> Cali<strong>for</strong>nia office.Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> first met Richard <strong>Nixon</strong> when he was serving as Vice Presidentunder Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952. Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> later assisted Vice President<strong>Nixon</strong> in his unsuccessful 1960 <strong>Presidential</strong> campaign against John F. Kennedy.He also managed Richard <strong>Nixon</strong>'s unsuccessful campaign <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> governorship ofCali<strong>for</strong>nia in 1962.In 1968, H. R. <strong>Haldeman</strong> became <strong>the</strong> chief of staff of Richard <strong>Nixon</strong>'s successfulcampaign <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presidency. During <strong>the</strong> campaign, Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> becameresponsible <strong>for</strong> maintaining <strong>the</strong> candidates’ schedule, supervising <strong>the</strong> advanceteam, and participating in <strong>the</strong> development of campaign strategy and plat<strong>for</strong>ms.After President <strong>Nixon</strong>'s election, <strong>Nixon</strong> appointed H .R. <strong>Haldeman</strong> Assistant to<strong>the</strong> President and <strong>the</strong> White House Chief of Staff.H. R. <strong>Haldeman</strong>’s duties included maintaining <strong>the</strong> President’s schedule andcoordinating <strong>the</strong> White House staff. Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> was responsible <strong>for</strong> running<strong>the</strong> administrative functions part in <strong>the</strong> White House. He supervised <strong>the</strong>administrative staff responsible <strong>for</strong> appointments and dispersed <strong>the</strong> President’sinstructions to his staff.Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> was a key figure in <strong>the</strong> Watergate scandal, and by April 30, 1973,<strong>the</strong> scandal <strong>for</strong>ced Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> (along with John Ehrlichman, President <strong>Nixon</strong>’sdomestic policy advisor) to resign (on this same day, <strong>the</strong> resignation of JohnDean, White House Counsel, was accepted by <strong>the</strong> President). On New Year’sDay, 1975, he was convicted of conspiracy and obstruction of justice, and he wassentenced February 21 to an 18-month prison sentence, which he served inLompoc Federal Prison in Cali<strong>for</strong>nia.On his release from prison Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> became vice president of <strong>the</strong> David H.Murdoch real estate development company. In 1978, Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> published hisautobiography The Ends of Power. Harry Robbins <strong>Haldeman</strong> died of cancer onNovember 13, 1993, at his home in Santa Barbara, Cali<strong>for</strong>nia. At <strong>the</strong> time of his5


death, H.R. <strong>Haldeman</strong> had been working on a publication of his diaries from histime in <strong>the</strong> White House. The <strong>Haldeman</strong> Diaries: Inside <strong>the</strong> <strong>Nixon</strong> White Housewas published in 1994.6


Scope and Content Summary: The H.R. <strong>Haldeman</strong> <strong>Collection</strong> consists ofpapers, photographs, books, objects, and audio-visual materials. The objects havebeen transferred to <strong>the</strong> Curatorial Department <strong>for</strong> preservation reasons. Thephotograph section of <strong>the</strong> collection is maintained with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r photographcollections in <strong>the</strong> archive, and <strong>the</strong> audio-visual materials are maintained with <strong>the</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r audio-visual collections. The books are maintained with <strong>the</strong> rare bookcollection, and are available <strong>for</strong> research.The H. R. <strong>Haldeman</strong> paper collection is separated into six series. The first seriesconsists of Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong>’s campaign files <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1960, 1962, 1968, and 1972campaigns. The second series is Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong>’s White House AdministrativeFiles. These papers consist of working files from Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong>’s office,materials from his tenure on <strong>the</strong> board of <strong>the</strong> Ford Theater committee, and pro andcon correspondence in response to Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong>’s appearance on <strong>the</strong> TodayShow on NBC. O<strong>the</strong>r sub-series include Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong>’s diary and materialsrelating to <strong>Presidential</strong> trips.The third series includes materials regarding <strong>the</strong> civil suits Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong> wasinvolved in during and after his tenure in <strong>the</strong> White House. The lawsuits arearranged in <strong>the</strong> order <strong>the</strong>y were filed. The fourth series contains material relatingto <strong>the</strong> “Watergate” break-in, and <strong>the</strong> related trials that followed. This includes Mr.<strong>Haldeman</strong>’s notes taken during <strong>the</strong> trial and notes taken by John Ehrlichman ofmeetings with President Richard <strong>Nixon</strong> which were used in <strong>the</strong> trial. Alsoincluded are transcripts from <strong>the</strong> initial trial and subsequent appeals. The fifthseries deals with <strong>the</strong> years following Mr. <strong>Haldeman</strong>’s tenure in <strong>the</strong> White Houseand trial.
