C.LA.U. Report 472: Land off Barnack Road, Stamford,, Lincolnshire 2.0 ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The archaeological/historical background of the site, and the significance of previous discoveries (as set out in the comments of the South Kesteven Community Archaeologist accompanying the archaeological brief), is as follows: Stamford originated in the 9 fh -l(/ h centuries, when a small settlement was established north of the River Welland. Slightly later, a more substantial Anglo-Danish settlement was established, shortly followed by a Saxon burgh south of the river. Prior to this date, the Romans are known to have settled immediately to the northwest, at Great Casterton. However, there is evidence to suggest that there was prehistoric activity in the vicinity and a number of prehistoric sites are recorded on the outskirts of the town. Located in the field immediately to the east of the development are a number of possible prehistoric features recorded from cropmark evidence from the RCHM(E) (1997). These include a probable Bronze Age round barrow, described as '...an incomplete, circular enclosure, diameter 30m, defined by I ditch', a probable prehistoric or Roman enclosure, '...a rectilinear enclosure measuring 35m by 20m and defined by one ditch with an entrance in the west side' and a probable prehistoric or Iron Age pit alignment, '...an interrupted linear feature, defined by 1 line of pits with a maximum length of 240mIt is therefore highly possible that there may be other features associated with these that may extend into the development area. 3.0 RESULTS A detailed breakdown of the results of the geophysical survey is given in Appendix B, below. 4.0 DISCUSSION OF RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Approximately 50% of the site was investigated by means of detailed geophysical survey, in five individual areas (Areas 1-5). The geophysical survey report (see Appendix B, below) highlighted a pattern of positive magnetic anomalies which appear to provide tentative evidence for a number of silted ditches, of linear and arcuate form. It appears that several of these may comprise the remnants of prehistoric ring ditches which have been eroded by modern ploughing. In addition, the geophysical survey detected the probable traces of linear field boundaries or tracks, and remains of ridge and furrow cultivation. The precise nature, and date, of the features identified by the survey cannot, of course, be determined without further archaeological work, probably by means of a programme of trial trenching. In view of the interpretation of the features both on this site, and in the neighbouring field to the east, it seems very likely that important features are preserved relating to the prehistoric, or Roman, landscape.
