It is also essential to thetreatment of many types of cancer and blooddisorders.Barbara Blanche, lead donor relationsmanager for the Merseyside area, said: “Asthere are only 28 days in February, there’salways the chance that people may intend togive blood this month but leave it too late tomake an appointment. As a result, we wouldurge both existing and new donors to help savelives by booking into one of their local sessionsas soon as they can. This can be done quicklyand easily by going to www.blood.co.uk orcalling 0300 123 23 23.”Anyone aged between 17 and 65, weighingmore than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in generalgood health can apply to become a blooddonor. Over the last few weeks therehave been two outbreaks of measles in Sefton, one ina nursery and one in a high school. Measles is highlycontagious and can spread rapidly among children. Itcauses an unpleasant illness, which can cause manyside effects and complications and your child mayneed to be admitted to hospital.Dr Janet Atherton, Sefton’sDirector of Public Health(left), said: “Many schoolaged children have notreceived both doses of MMRvaccine and are at risk frommeasles. Parents may notbe aware that their childrenare not fully protected.“For this reason we will beoffering children who havemissed their vaccination an opportunity to have thefull course of MMR. Parents of primary school agedchildren will be offered the vaccination at their GPpractice. Secondary school aged children will beoffered the vaccine by a school nurse at school overthe next few months.”The MMR vaccine is safe and effective. It protectschildren against mumps and rubella (Germanmeasles) as well as protecting against measles.Dympna Edwards a Consultant in Public Health andmother of two children said: “When I heard aboutmeasles affecting children locally I checked with myGP practice to make sure that my children were up todate with all their vaccines. I know that we had missedsome appointments a few years ago and it is easy tothink that everything is ok when something has beenmissed. I wouldn’t want to take the risk- not when Iknow about how poorly it has made some children”If you are unsure whether your child is fully protectedagainst measles contact your GP.
