Fortunately, not all lawmakersare content to stay inthe dark. Rep. Jason Murphey,a Republican from Guthrie, ischairman of the governmentmodernization committee inthe Oklahoma House of Representatives. He makes it hisbusiness to know about highereducation, and in a series ofrecent columns in the EdmondSun he tried to give readers acrash course in higher ed’sinefficiencies and in the disruptiveinnovation that ischanging the entire model. In a column entitled“Higher education spendingcontinues to skyrocket,” Rep.Murphey showed how continualspending hikes arebuilding Oklahoma’s highered fiefdom. “In fact,” he says,“there are now an estimated32,000 full-time positionswithin the higher ed system. To put this into perspective, consider that the remainderof state government agenciescontain about 37,000 positions.”(What’s more, PatrickMcGuigan reported last yearthat 2,086 of those higher-edemployees are earning six-figuresalaries.)In “Suggestions for loweringtuition costs,” Rep.Murphey again mentions “theenormous expansion in highered spending and indebtednessduring the past 10 years,” andsuggests that consolidation isneeded. (Incredibly, our stateof 3.8 million people has nearly30 public higher-educationinstitutions.) “Higher ed can’thold out forever,” Rep.Murphey says. “Eventually, technology will drive downthe cost curve just like it has inso many other areas of life.”In “Popping the higher edbubble,” Rep. Murphey sayshigher education in Oklahoma“is drastically overpriced andwill face a day of reckoning.… By failing to lead the way inoffering reduced-cost onlineaccess, local universities riskfailing to establish marketshare in higher education venuesof the future.”Lastly, in a column entitled“In the future, higher educationwill be free,” Rep.Murphey says that “Harvardand MIT have each invested$30 million in their own onlinefree education platform(edx.org). … Edx.org is justone free online higher educationplatform.
