BRYAN STATION BAPTIST CHURCHTHE PIONEER BAPTISTINDEPENDENT ▪ MISSIONARY ▪ ESTABLISHED 1786“Preaching the same truth since before Kentucky was a state.”Volume 40, No. 12Introduction: Preaching is notprimarily for pleasure but for profit. The objective of the true minister isnot a plentiful purse and praise ofmen, but the glory of God andsafety of souls. The safe and soundpreacher will emphasize the fact, the enormity, the terrible dangerand God’s sure remedy for sin.Sin is a patent fact; its existencedoes not need to be argued. Sin is afact of experience, of observation, and of revelation. Sin is somethingI feel in my own heart; it is somethingI see in others, even in mybest friends; and it is somethingrevealed in the Bible.Sin is dangerous beyond expressionand description. Sin isviolation of the moral law of Godand violated law cries for retribution.Sin is against God; crime isagainst society. Human societymay punish crime; only God canpunish sin. Human society may failto punish the criminal; God will notfail to punish the sin. Every sinnerwill either be punished in his ownperson or in the person of a suretyor substitute. The only hope of anysinner is in a surety to pay his sindebt, and the only real surety isChrist. God will forgive the sinnerbut He will not forgive his sins. The only way for a sinner to bebrought into the favor of God is forSINBy: C. D. Colethe Just One to die for the unjustones. I Peter 3:18, “For Christ alsohath once suffered for sins, the justfor the unjust, that he might bringus to God, being put to death in theflesh, but quickened by the Spirit:”Romans 5:8, “But God commendethhis love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christdied for us.”FALSE DEFINITIONSModernism. “Sin is good inthe making.” “The brute inheritancewhich every man carries with himin the process of evolution is an advancetowards salvation.” No hopefor the sinner as an individual; onlysalvation is a racial salvation andwill be complete when evolutionhas made the race perfect. This islike the process of improving therazor-back hog by breeding. Butthe Bible says that which is born ofthe flesh is flesh and the fleshprofiteth nothing. Facts as well asSpirit give the lie to evolutionarysalvation. Burning cities andscorched earth, wailing women, crying children, and dying men repudiatemodernism.Christian Science. “A merefigment of a perverted imagination;”“an imaginary creation ofabnormal minds.” In other wordssin does not actually exist; sin is notSEPTEMBER 2009a reality. People just imagine theysin and this imagination is a diseaseof the mind. The man who is convictedof sin is unbalanced; off inhis upper-story, and the man whomourns over sin is terrible insane;but this nonsense is refuted senseand sceptre. When the prodigal soncame to himself he said in Luke15:18, “…I have sinned againstheaven, and before thee,…” Soaccording to scripture the insaneman is the one who denies his sin.I John 1:10, “If we say that we havenot sinned, we make him a liar, andhis word is not in us.”The popular view. Confuses sinwith crime and vice. Sinners areyoung men sowing their wild oats,or women of the brothel; men whoare murderers and gangsters. TheBible teaches Romans 3:23, “Forall have sinned, and come short ofthe glory of God;” Paul Kanamari’spreaching was resented bythe Japanese. They said he talkedto them as if he were an officialtalking to convicts. They confusedsin with vice. Every person is asinner, but all are not vicious orcriminals. There is many a virtuouswoman but no sinless women. There are many law-abiding menbut no sinless men. There are manybeautiful babies, but no baby iswithout a sinful nature. Psalm 51:5,

PAGE 2 VOLUME 40, NO. 12“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity;and in sin did my mother conceiveme.”SOME TRUE DEFINITIONSWestminister Confession:“Sin is any lack of conformity to ortransgression of the law of God.”A. Strong: “Sin is any lack ofconformity to the law of God,whether in act, disposition, orstate.” He recognizes sin as a conditionof nature. They are sinnerswhile asleep, although sinful natureis not breaking out in acts of rebellion.I John 3:4, “Whosoever committethsin transgresseth also thelaw: for sin is the transgression ofthe law.” Literally: sin in lawlessness.MISSING THE MARKThere is a word which means“to miss the mark” and nearly 200times in our English Bible, it istranslated sin. Man has missed themark; he has missed the purpose forhis being. Why did God makeman? For His own glory, but manhas sinned and “…come short ofthe glory of God;” Man has failedin the biggest business ever committedto his care, he has failed toglorify God. Like a clock that failsto tell the time of day, man is goodfor nothing if he does not glorifyGod.There is another word whichmeans to turn aside from thestraight path. This conception ofsin is expressed in Psalm 78:40-41,56-57, “How oft did they provokehim in the wilderness, and grievehim in the desert! Yea, they turnedback and tempted God, and limitedthe Holy One of Israel…Yet theytempted and provoked the mosthigh God, and kept not his testimonies:But turned back, and dealtunfaithfully like their fathers: theywere turned aside like a deceitfulbow.” Isaiah 53:6, “All we likesheep have gone astray; we haveturned every one to his own way;…” Man is off-center. Instead ofrevolving around God, making theglory of God his chief business, man has become a wandering star, living for his own selfish ends.COMPETITION WITH GODSin may be defined as competitionwith God in realm of authority. This view of sin is seen in the storyof the first human sin. Genesis2:16-17, “And the LORD God commandedthe man, saying, Of everytree of the garden thou mayestfreely eat: But of the tree of theknowledge of good and evil, thoushalt not eat of it: for in the daythat thou eatest thereof thou shaltsurely die.” Genesis 3:4-6, “Andthe serpent said unto the woman, Yeshall not surely die: For God dothknow that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, andye shall be as gods, knowing goodand evil. And when the woman sawthat the tree was good for food, andthat it was pleasant to the eyes, anda tree to be desired to make onewise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto herhusband with her; and he did eat.”The word sin does not occur in theaccount but the fact of sin does, andit is described as competition withGod. Satan told Eve that by eatingthe forbidden fruit they would becomeas gods, knowing good andevil. And when the deed had beendone, Genesis 3:22, “And theLORD God said, Behold, the man isbecome as one of us, to know goodand evil:…”In the first sin man became likeGod. In what sense? Not in thesense of character. In eating thatfruit man did not improve his characterbut lost the good characterwith which he was created. Not inthe sense of acquiring the divineattributes such as power, holinessand wisdom. In eating that fruitman lost power to live and died; helost his original holiness and becamedepraved; and he lost his wisdomand became a fool. Sin is consummatefolly. Every sin is an actof playing the fool. The only possible way in whichit can be truly said that man becamelike God was in spirit and aim.Adam and Eve would compete withGod and determine for themselveswhat they could do. They assertedtheir independence of God. Theywould determine (know for themselves)what is good and evil. Theywould no longer be tied to God’sword about what they could do orhave. They would be a law untothemselves and do as they pleased.Do that which was right in theirown eyes. They entered into competitionwith God for sovereignty. They started a rebellion againsttheir Maker and Ruler and that issin.Every sin is in competition withGod in realm of authority. If I havea right to say what is right andwrong, then I am God; I am supremein realm of authority. Sin isa declaration of independence beforeGod and this means war.Isaiah 43:10-11, “…before me therewas no God formed, neither shallthere be after me. I, even I, am theLORD; and beside me there is nosaviour.”SIN IS DANGEROUSGreat Britain could do littleabout it when her American coloniesdeclared their independence

VOLUME 40, NO. 12and threw off her yoke of authority,Britain lost the war. But there ismuch God can do with his rebelliouscreatures. The sinner is waginga hopeless war against God.God will allow no rivals or competitors.God is the only personwho has the right and ability to doas he pleases. God is the only personin all the universe who cansafely consult his own pleasureabout what he does. God the onlyperson who has the right to be selfishand live for His own glory; allmoral creatures are obligated toglorify him in all they do. I Corinthians10:31, “Whether therefore yeeat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do,do all to the glory of God.”WHOM TO FEARMatthew 10:28, “And fear notthem which kill the body, but arenot able to kill the soul: but ratherfear him which is able to destroyboth soul and body in hell.” Manypeople have a woefully inadequateconception of sin. Sin is more thana slight demeanor for which Godgives men a scolding; sin is a speciesof high treason against an almightyGod. Jesus teaching inMark 9:43-48, “And if thy hand offendthee, cut if off: it is better forthee to enter into life maimed, thanhaving two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall bequenched: Where their worm diethnot, and the fire is not quenched. And if thy foot offend thee, cut ifoff: it is better for thee to enter haltinto life, than having two feet to becast into hell, into the fire thatnever shall be quenched: Wheretheir worm dieth not, and the fire isnot quenched. And if thine eye offendthee, pluck it out: it is betterfor thee to enter into the kingdom ofGod with one eye, than having twoeyes to be cast into hell fire: Wheretheir worm dieth not, and the fire isnot quenched.” Sin is somethingmore than a puncture of good resolutionson the highway of life; sin isa blow out that sends men to deathand destruction. But there is hope; I Corinthians15:1-4, “Moreover, brethren, I declareunto you the gospel which Ipreached unto you, which also yehave received, and wherein yestand; By which also ye are saved,if ye keep in memory what Ipreached unto you, unless ye havebelieved in vain. For I deliveredPAGE 3unto you first of all that which Ialso received, how that Christ diedfor our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, andthat he rose again the third day accordingto the scriptures;”PASTOR GORMLEY’S NEW EMAILalfred.gormley@gmail.comBLUE GRASS BAPTISTSCHOOLBryan Station Baptist Church has been a long time supporterof Blue Grass Baptist School in Lexington, Kentucky.Blue Grass provides a Christian education to children from
