StudentsThe <strong>ARC</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Excellence</strong> is theworld’s largest provider <strong>of</strong> graduatetraining in coral reef science. The<strong>Centre</strong>’s goal is to build human capacityand expertise in coral reef science, bysupporting and training outstandingstudents. Approximately $3.5 million<strong>of</strong> our <strong>ARC</strong> award <strong>for</strong> 2005-2010 isearmarked in support <strong>of</strong> the researchcosts <strong>of</strong> student projects. In addition,the <strong>Centre</strong>'s Student Committee hasbeen provided with $40,000 <strong>for</strong> studentmentoring activities each year.In 2006, 22 Honours, 20 Masters and90 PhD students were supportedand supervised by <strong>Centre</strong> personnel.Graduate students are heavily involvedin new multi-nodal (video-conferenced)research seminars and quarterly review/planning meetings <strong>for</strong> each <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Centre</strong>'s Programs. In addition, 35 studentmembers <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ARC</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> currentlyhave multi-institutional supervisoryarrangements. At JCU, 8 <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Centre</strong>’sstudents are also members <strong>of</strong> AIMS@JCU. Students and their projectsare highlighted on the <strong>ARC</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>'swebsite at www.coralcoe.org.au/people-students.htmlThe <strong>Centre</strong> convened a NationalMentoring Day in August 2006following the Australian <strong>Coral</strong> <strong>Reef</strong>Society symposium in Mission Beach,Queensland. The event was attended by54 PhD and Masters students from sevenuniversities, and focused on enhancingstudents’ research and publicationskills. Discussions were led by TerryHughes (JCU), Ove Hoegh-Guldberg(UQ), Laurie McCook (GBRMPA) andMorgan Pratchett (JCU). The <strong>Centre</strong>also provided two workshops in 2006to assist students at JCU, UQ and ANUin preparing postdoctoral fellowshipapplications. As a result, ten fellowshipproposals were submitted in the current<strong>ARC</strong> round. Five $1000 prizes <strong>for</strong> the<strong>ARC</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>'s Best Student Papers <strong>for</strong>2006 were awarded to Tracy Ainsworth(UQ), Bridget Ayling (ANU), MariaDornelas (JCU), Mia Hoogenboom(JCU), and Ailsa Kerswell (JCU). Mariaalso received a University Medal fromJCU <strong>for</strong> an outstanding PhD thesis.At the end <strong>of</strong> 2006, the <strong>Centre</strong> recruiteda new student administrator, OlgaBazaka, who will liaise closely withthe <strong>Centre</strong>'s students and the StudentCommittee. In 2007, student mentoringworkshops will be held in Fremantle,WA , in October. Student members willalso be actively participating in the<strong>ARC</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>’s National Forum <strong>of</strong> <strong>Coral</strong><strong>Reef</strong> Futures, which will be held atthe Australian Academy <strong>of</strong> Science, inCanberra on October 17-19th, 2007.The <strong>ARC</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>’s international network <strong>of</strong> students. In 2006, 64 <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ARC</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>’s graduate students came to Australia from 29 countries.25
