Huckleberry House 2012 Annual Report Youth Outreach Program Helping outside of our home. Taking our services to the streets. Teens don’t have to come to Huck House for the help they need to improve their lives. Huck House will go to them. Through a patient, persistent approach, the Youth Outreach Program connects with kids on their turf—at schools, community centers and playgrounds, shopping centers, and on the streets. The Youth Outreach Program is the only local program that brings counseling services and support directly to teens in need to help them improve situations at home, at school, and in their lives. Youth Outreach counselors work with teens to address family, school, employment, and housing problems. They distribute literature, health and hygiene packets, and food and drink items. And they connect at-risk young people with resources in the community that can help them resolve their problems and lead healthier, happier lives. 11
Huckleberry House 2012 Annual Report FY2012 Focuses and Improvements This past year, the Youth Outreach Program concentrated on strengthening relationships with at risk-youth as well as with community stakeholders and advocates for teenagers and young adults. By enabling young people in need to take advantage of the help available to them, the Youth Outreach Program empowered troubled teens to take charge of their situations, work things out at school and at home, and stay off the streets and out of crisis. Positive Youth Development Model The Youth Outreach Program bases its efforts on the theory of Positive Youth Development, which believes that with guidance and support from caring adults, all young people can grow up healthy and happy. Following this model, counselors worked with youth to identify their individual strengths and apply those strengths to problem areas, such as school issues or trouble at home. By helping youth recognize their unique capabilities, the Positive Youth Development Model empowered youth to leverage existing strengths to enhance all areas of their lives. Housing for Transition-Age Youth More and more transition-age youth are faced with the problem of homelessness. By continually seeking out and strengthening its housing-related connections, the Youth Outreach Program helped transition-age youth find housing of their own and offered support to these teens during their time of transition. Bullying and Violence Prevention Because of the prevalence of bullying within our schools and communities, the Youth Outreach 12
