GRANTS PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR<br />

OUTREACH PROGRAMS<br />

New York State Council on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> has awarded<br />

a grant to <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> to help support <strong>the</strong> School<br />

Partnership program at Gribbin School in Glen<br />

Cove and Archer St. School in Freeport, two partner<br />

schools with <strong>the</strong> largest enrollments. Over six<br />

hundred K – 4th grade students will have opportunities<br />

to participate in workshops and attend<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mances at <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong>.<br />

<strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> and Eastern Suffolk BOCES have<br />

partnered to implement <strong>the</strong> second year of a<br />

multi-year U.S. Department of Education grant<br />

which uses <strong>the</strong> arts to encourage creativity and<br />

collaboration in all areas of teaching and learning.<br />

SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM ENCOURAGES CREATIVITY<br />

AND IMAGINATIVE LEARNING<br />

<strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s School Partnership<br />

program, modeled on <strong>the</strong> highly acclaimed<br />

aes<strong>the</strong>tic education program<br />

of Lincoln <strong>Center</strong> Institute, is now<br />

in its eleventh year. The program is a<br />

comprehensive approach to teaching<br />

and learning about <strong>the</strong> arts, applicable<br />

to all grade levels and academic disciplines.<br />

Teaching artists and teachers<br />

work toge<strong>the</strong>r to plan and design<br />

projects which encourage students<br />

Deasy Elementary School, Glen Cove<br />

to explore <strong>the</strong>ir own artistic capabilities<br />

and gain insights into <strong>the</strong> creative process. Experiential in-school<br />

workshops are combined with attendance at professional per<strong>for</strong>mances<br />

at <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> and viewing art works at museums. Through classroom<br />

activities, students streng<strong>the</strong>n essential skills, including abstract and<br />

critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, problem solving and communication,<br />

all of which align with <strong>the</strong> new Common Core Standards<br />

required by New York State’s Education Department.<br />

Our Family Fun series of events presents outstanding per<strong>for</strong>mances from around<br />

<strong>the</strong> world. Children and parents were captivated by Dinosaur Petting Zoo from<br />

Australia, Golden Dragon Acrobats from China, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s<br />

A Brown Bear, A Moon and A Caterpillar: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle, as<br />

well as Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical, MOMIX Botanica, and New York<br />

Theatre Ballet’s Alice in Wonderland Follies. Children and parents also joined in<br />

some “serious fun” at special interactive pre-per<strong>for</strong>mance Family Workshops, designed<br />

specifically to complement each per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />

With our new Passport program, families can journey toge<strong>the</strong>r through an exciting<br />

world of family-friendly music, dance and <strong>the</strong>ater! Families who attend a<br />

<strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> family program can get <strong>the</strong>ir passports stamped at <strong>the</strong> “Customs<br />

Table” in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> atrium. Collect stamps in your passport and receive<br />

prizes, special discounts and even a backstage tour!

opportunities <strong>for</strong> LIU Post students to learn new techniques<br />

and gain insights into <strong>the</strong> professional world of per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />

• In October, <strong>the</strong> State Symphony Capella of Russia and<br />

Maestro Polyansky worked with Professor Mark Shapiro’s<br />

choir in a master class.<br />

worked with LIU Post music<br />

students and held “A Career in<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance” session.<br />

• In December, MOMIX offered<br />

a rich experience <strong>for</strong> LIU Post<br />

students. A master class, led by<br />

dancer Sarah Nachbauer and a<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance PLUS! talk with<br />

Moses Pendleton, Artistic Director<br />

of MOMIX, were highlights.<br />

• In February, LIU Post string majors and Plainview-Old<br />

Bethpage High School students worked with Black Violin<br />

artists in improvisational sessions. LIU Post X-Factor Step<br />

Team and dance department students participated in a stepping<br />

class with Step Afrika! Also in February, Pittsburgh<br />

Symphony Orchestra’s Assistant Conductor Maestro Thomas<br />

Hong held a rehearsal and coaching session with Maureen<br />

Hynes’ LIU Post Orchestra and a master class with <strong>the</strong><br />

Herricks High School string quartet.<br />

• In March, LIU Post dance students participated in a master<br />

class with Complexions Contemporary Ballet. And<br />

in conjunction with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Herbie Hancock<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance, <strong>the</strong> 1st<br />

WORKING TOGETHER<br />

Campus Connections provide unique collaborations between<br />

<strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> and <strong>the</strong> LIU Post campus. In 2011-<br />

12, Associate Professor Karen Ogulnick and Adjunct<br />

Professor Floyd Kessler invited <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> teaching<br />

artist Patti Dunham to work with <strong>the</strong>ir students, future<br />

teachers of ESL/Bilingual Education.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r collaborations included post-per<strong>for</strong>mance “Meet<br />

and Greets” <strong>for</strong> Professor Michelle Mallardi’s Musical<br />

Theater students with Linda Eder, Adjunct Professor<br />

Floyd Kessler’s T.E.S.O.L students with Golden Dragon<br />

Acrobats, and T.K. Blue’s Jazz Studies students with Herbie<br />

Hancock.<br />

AESTHETIC EDUCATION SUMMER SEMINAR!<br />

This past summer, an enthusiastic group of twenty K-12<br />

educators attended <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s aes<strong>the</strong>tic education<br />

Creative Classrooms seminar. This annual one-week “journey<br />

of imaginative learning” is open to educators of all levels<br />

and disciplines, school and district administrators, curriculum<br />

specialists, artists and arts administrators. It is also<br />

<strong>the</strong> starting point <strong>for</strong> teachers who are joining <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s<br />

School Partnership program.<br />

Aes<strong>the</strong>tic education is a process-based approach that encourages<br />

active, experiential, student-centered learning.<br />

Participants are encouraged to “take off <strong>the</strong>ir teacher hats,”<br />

be students <strong>the</strong>mselves, and explore, create, observe, listen,<br />

question and reflect. Facilitated by trained <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong><br />

teaching artists, participants explore <strong>the</strong> creative process<br />

through guided activities that balance aes<strong>the</strong>tic education<br />

philosophy and practice, activity and reflection, and personal<br />

and group inquiries.<br />

Highlights of <strong>the</strong> seminar included a per<strong>for</strong>mance of Cuentos,<br />

Tales from <strong>the</strong> Latino World by nationally acclaimed<br />

master storyteller David Gonzalez, as well as a visit to <strong>the</strong><br />

Nassau County Museum of Art to explore <strong>the</strong> photography<br />

of Richard Avedon and o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

Summer Seminar


2011 TILLES SCHOLARS<br />

Six young Long Island musicians were named <strong>Tilles</strong> Scholars,<br />

following a competitive audition process that was held<br />

under <strong>the</strong> auspices of <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Per<strong>for</strong>ming<br />

<strong>Arts</strong>. Each student received partial financial support to attend<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2011 LIU Post Chamber Music Festival.<br />

Directed by Dr. Susan Deaver, <strong>the</strong> festival is an intensive<br />

three-week program that focuses on <strong>the</strong> study and per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

of <strong>the</strong> standard chamber music repertoire. The<br />

<strong>Tilles</strong> Scholars program is made possible by <strong>the</strong> Gilbert<br />

and Rose <strong>Tilles</strong> Endowment <strong>for</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> Education.<br />

CLARA ZAHLER, CAMPUS ARTS LIAISON<br />

students, faculty and staff, through<br />

programs. Clara is an accomplished<br />

violinist and has per<strong>for</strong>med professionally as a soloist and<br />

chamber musician. Clara also has extensive experience in<br />

arts education in grades K-12 as well as college teaching<br />

experience.<br />

Campus Connections, an initiative of <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> <strong>Arts</strong><br />

Education, encourages LIU faculty to enhance <strong>the</strong>ir curriculum<br />

with <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mances. <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong><br />

underwrites <strong>the</strong> cost of tickets to per<strong>for</strong>mances that faculty<br />

members assign as part of <strong>the</strong>ir coursework. To obtain<br />

SWING FOR KIDS 2011<br />

<strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong>’s annual Golf & Tennis Outing last June<br />

raised $129,941 <strong>for</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> Education, helping to support<br />

many programs including residencies, workshops, professional<br />

development and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Tilles</strong> Scholars program. A big<br />

<strong>the</strong> first professional company in <strong>the</strong> world dedicated<br />

to <strong>the</strong> tradition of stepping, and Black Violin, a three-time<br />

Apollo-winning duo, shared <strong>the</strong> stage, in an evening filled<br />

with dynamic dance and <strong>the</strong> ultimate synergy between classical<br />

and hip-hop music.<br />

Dinosaur Petting Zoo, an eye-popping, jaw-dropping show, made<br />

its U.S. debut at <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> with record setting sales. Presented<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Australian company Erth, Dinosaur Petting Zoo transported<br />

kids and adults on an interactive, prehistoric journey through<br />

an amazing cast of dinosaurs. Children got up close and personal<br />

with amazingly life-like puppets brought to life via various <strong>for</strong>ms<br />

<strong>Arts</strong> Education programs at <strong>Tilles</strong> <strong>Center</strong> share <strong>the</strong>se common goals: to allow participants to<br />

experience <strong>the</strong> per<strong>for</strong>ming arts firsthand, and to develop a greater awareness of how <strong>the</strong> arts<br />

relate to our lives and <strong>the</strong> world. Professional per<strong>for</strong>mances by world-class artists are enhanced<br />

by in-school artist workshops and residencies, professional development workshops<br />

<strong>for</strong> educators and intensive school partnerships. Students who participate in our programs<br />

range from elementary school through college level. Enriching events are also scheduled <strong>for</strong><br />

adult audiences. Our programs encourage self-expression, in <strong>the</strong> belief that <strong>the</strong> arts provide<br />

insight into <strong>the</strong> nature of human experience and are essential to every learner, at every age.
