SECTIONEIGHTUncertainties and LimitationsSECTION 8UNCERTAINTIES AND LIMITATIONSOnly a very small portion of the pertinent subbottom conditions has been explored. It should berecognized that the explorations are miles apart and variations in subbottom conditions could occurbetween the explorations. The preliminary engineering characterization of the subbottom sediments couldchange based on the results of additional explorations and testing. The Salton Sea is in one of the most seismic areas of California. It is anticipated that a major earthquakewill occur on the San Andreas Fault, and other nearby faults, during the lifetime of the project. Therefore, the potential seismic hazards that could impact the project will need to be further evaluated.Geotechnical engineering and the geologic sciences are characterized by uncertainty. Professionaljudgments presented here are based partly on our understanding of the proposed project, and partly on ourgeneral experience. Our engineering work and judgments rendered meet current professional standards;we do not guarantee the performance of the project in any respect.W:\27663042\00005-c-r.doc\1-Mar-04\SDG 8-1
