<strong>Sleep</strong> <strong>Disorders</strong><strong>Laboratory</strong>What is a sleep study?A sleep study is an overnight observationof your body while you areasleep in our specialized lab to findpatterns and disruptions in yoursleep.While you sleep, your body functionsare different than while youare awake. Disrupted sleep fromcertain conditions can lead to daytimesleepiness and medical complicationssuch as heart disease, strokeand high blood pressure.What can I expect during mysleep study?Upon arrival to the lab, your sleeptechnologist will show you to yourprivate room and walk you throughthe procedures for the night.The sleep technologist will placemonitoring equipment on yourbody and leave you to settle in.Your appointment will start at 9:15p.m. or 9:30 p.m. You will be wokenup at approximately 6:00 a.m.Please note the technologists do not arriveuntil 9:00 p.m.What is measured during the sleepstudy?Depending on your assessment, the followingareas may be measured withbody sensors:Brain wavesHeart beatsEye movementsMuscle tone and body positionLeg movementsBreathingOxygen levelsHow can I sleep with the sensors onme?Surprisingly, most people sleep reasonablywell. We are only looking forsample of your sleep pattern and weapply the body sensors in a way thatallows you to turn and move duringyour sleep.Will the sensors hurt?No. The entire procedure is painless.Some patients may notice a mild ortemporary skin irritation. Our staff willensure your sleeping environment is ascomfortable as possible.What should I bring to my sleepstudy? Robe Two-piece pajamas Slippers Personal hygiene items(toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.) Medications (continue takingthem as usual) Activities to help you relax, forexample:-Books/magazines-Knitting/needlepoint-MP3 player-Puzzles/crosswords Snacks (not provided by hospital) If you are on a nasal or ContinuousPositive Airway pressure(CPAP) unit, please bring it withyouPlease do not: Drink any caffeinated beveragesafter 3:00 p.m. Bring large sums of money orjewelry with you Nap during the day Use hair spray or gelIf you have excessive daytimesleepiness, make sure that someonedrives you to and from yoursleep study.


How do I access the <strong>Sleep</strong> <strong>Disorders</strong><strong>Laboratory</strong> after hours?Use the Medical Office Buildingentrance and, once inside, press thebuzzer to your right to speak with astaff member.Do you or your partner have troublesleeping at night?
