Body ArtABCDAre you a fan of body art? Have you ever thought of getting pierced or tattooed?Among young people in the United States tattoos and piercings are becoming moreand more popular. Some people admire this and even call it "body art". Otherpeople don't understand why anyone would want such "ugly things" on their bodies.Why do so many young Americans like body art? People's motivations for piercingor tattooing could be anything from attracting a romantic partner to just trying to bedifferent from others. A tattoo can be a reminder of an important event insomeone's life or it can show their taste in fashion. lt can also make people appear"cool" to their social group and so increase their status. Jonathan Daulton, aged 19,has ten piercings on his face. "Honestly, I do it to shock people", says the Universityof Nebraska student. Another student, 21-year-old Marina Harding from Seattle,Washington, gives her reason as: "This is how I express myself." She likes to weara T-shirt that says: "l dress this way to shock youl" This statement refers to herbright green hair, and piercings on her tongue, lip, nose and eyebrow, as well as sixearrings in each ear.
