University of Michigan – Radiology IT Support

DEPARTMENTAL STAFF SUPPORT• Radiology IT Division – 12.5 FTEs• Responsibilities:–PACS Analysis– PACS Support– PACS System Administration–Project Management– Data Mining and Reports– Help Desk

RADIOLOGY VIEW OF HYBRID STRUCTURE• Structure works if MCIT staff is dedicatedto supporting only Radiology• Trust between groups is essential• Effectiveness of structure can hinge onrelationship of two directors• Radiology IT Director must be able tolead/initiate projects and deploy MCITstaff as needed

MCIT VIEW OF HYBRID STRUCTURE• Support of many clinical departments -can be difficult to balance the haves andhave-nots• Need to understand different specialtiesand how they deliver care. (400 differentapplications)• Need to communicate institutionalprojects and initiatives to departmentsand department IT personnel• Need to balance department andenterprise needs

ADVANTAGES OF STRUCTURE• Institutional cost sharing of IT staffsalaries• Radiology receives benefits of applicationsand improvements implemented at MCIT• Diverse application and hardwareexperience of both groups is beneficial toboth departments• Department benefits from having MCITmanage the infrastructure (servers, network, desktops)

DISADVANTAGES•There is increased bureaucracy•Occurrences of “them-vs-us”behavior•Current structure in Radiologycauses IT director to have non-IT responsibilities

DOES HYBRID STRUCTURE WORK?YES!!!Both MCIT and Radiology IT agree that itworks due to:• Collaborative behavior by both groups• Desire to provide excellent support to allstakeholders• Excellent leadership from both directorsand manager
