The Academy’s 1,800 fellowsare nursing’s most accomplished leaders in education, management,practice, and research.Sarah Farrell utilizes innovative technology tostimulate learning.Farrell Named ExceptionalNursing EducatorSarah Farrell (BSN ’81, MSN ’83), associateprofessor, has been named Elsevier’s2012 Exceptional Nursing Educator. This isthe publisher’s first annual nursing educatoraward, created to recognize the work of anoutstanding nursing faculty member whoshows exceptional skill, innovation, andeffectiveness in regard to promoting studentlearning, professionalism, and self confidence.Farrell teaches informatics, healthpolicy, psychiatric nursing, leadership, andan interprofessional course on evaluatinghealth information on the Web. In the healthinformation course, she teaches students to besavvy consumers, critique content, and developtheir own web pages. According to the Elsevierpress release, “One of the compelling aspectsof her nomination involves the integration oftechnology into the classroom. She helps otherfaculty with new technologies and inspiresstudents and faculty to use technology intheir work.” Elsevier also recognizes Farrellfor involving students in research projectsusing emerging technologies for patients inhealth promotion and maintenance. The center brings together master teachers who have already helped othersreach a higher level of excellence and who are interested in offering their expertise tocolleagues across UVA Grounds.RN to BSN Students Attend Legislative DayRN to BSN students, along with some UVA alumni, attended the 2012 Legislative Dayin Richmond. Each student followed a bill that has been introduced to the Virginia GeneralAssembly. Many students met with patrons of their bills to share their perspectives and togather research for course projects.
