Go Aussie!Film VictoriaSupporting Victorian practitionersto create great content.www.film.vic.gov.auBalibo | BlessedIntangible Asset Number 82The Elephant PrincessWelcomeWelcome to a terrific not-to-be-missed showcase of Australia’s finest contemporaryscreen productions. While some commentators referred to the range and quality of2009 films as among the best ever, this year’s releases have shaped up impressively. The 2010 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards Screenings includes feature films from worldrenowned filmmakers, together with work from exceptional emerging talents whoare creating waves at home and abroad. And in a landmark year for women, female directors account for eight of the19 features in competition. In an international industry where women are stilldisturbingly under-represented, Australia is heading in the right direction. Whileearlier this year Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the AcademyAward for Best Direction, Australian female directors are among some of the mostprolific and respected, here and overseas. This year’s nominated feature length documentaries are outstanding and thoughtprovoking. Our short filmmaking, the bedrock of future development, is also anexciting space. Last year’s AFI Award winning short film Miracle Fish went on to anOscar® nomination. This year’s nominated shorts are superbly crafted and veryentertaining. Alongside their big screen showcase, members can review these shortfilms when and where they want, via AFI TV.Thanks to all AFI members for your roles, variously supporting many industry juries andawards categories, and to our sponsors and partners for your generous and ongoingsupport. In particular I’d like to acknowledge our cinema partners this year, ACMICinemas, Cinema Nova, Hoyts Cinema Paris and Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace. As always, enormous thanks for all the support of the AFI Board, staff and volunteers.See you at the movies - and make sure your votes count!5Damian TrewhellaCEO, Australian Film Institute
