ENGINEERED PANEL SANDINGAcontinually increasing amount of “engineered” panel products are being utilized throughout the woodworking industry. From banded core stockutilizing particleboard to cabinet doors utilizing medium density fiberboard with an overlay, these materials are used in the production offurniture, cabinets and architectural doors, as well as RTA (ready-to-assemble) furnishings. Norton abrasive products are used extensively in themanufacture of these board products.The sanding applications include a variety of abrasive belt and grit sizes that are dependent on the size and the required surface finish of the itembeing sanded. For instance, coarse grits are used to dimension and to impart a scratch pattern that allows for proper bonding of high-pressurelaminates and heavy veneers. Norton abrasives play a key role in the sanding of rough sawn lumber.ROUGH LUMBER SANDINGRough sawn lumber is kiln dried prior to dimensioning. Exacttolerances are important to the success of subsequent machining, gluingand surfacing operations in the Machine Room. The operation requiresmachines with board-centering mechanisms and directly-opposed125-200 HP sanding heads. These heads equally dimension two sides atonce at feed-through speeds ranging from 50 to 125 FPM. Grit 24H isthe most commonly used for this operation.
