2002 - McDaniel College

"Far surpassing wealth unspoken.Ever may they be."During Jan Term, the Board of Trustees announced their decision tochange the name of the College. However, this decision did not sit wellwith many students, parents, and alumni. They wondered why the Boarddecided to announce the name change at a time when most students andfaculty were not on campus. A petition against the name change was circulatedon the internet and lots of media coverage ensued. The Boardasked everyone for their input on a new name suggestion.In mid-April, the Board met and voted on the new name for the College.It remained a secret until the campus-wide announcement on May 10,2002. At that time, the College held a party on campus and gave away teeshirts imprinted with the new name and logo. Those who were not able toattend that evening could log onto a website or dial an 800 number to learnthe new name.On July 1, 2002, Western Maryland College became McDaniel College inhonor of William McDaniel. Over his 6S-year association with the College,William McDaniel was a student, alumnus, professor, treasurer, vice president,acting president, and trustee of Western Maryland College.
