"Far surpassing wealth unspoken.Ever may they be."During Jan Term, the Board of Trustees announced their decision tochange the name of the College. However, this decision did not sit wellwith many students, parents, and alumni. They wondered why the Boarddecided to announce the name change at a time when most students andfaculty were not on campus. A petition against the name change was circulatedon the internet and lots of media coverage ensued. The Boardasked everyone for their input on a new name suggestion. In mid-April, the Board met and voted on the new name for the College. It remained a secret until the campus-wide announcement on May 10,2002. At that time, the College held a party on campus and gave away teeshirts imprinted with the new name and logo. Those who were not able toattend that evening could log onto a website or dial an 800 number to learnthe new name.On July 1, 2002, Western Maryland College became McDaniel College inhonor of William McDaniel. Over his 6S-year association with the College,William McDaniel was a student, alumnus, professor, treasurer, vice president, acting president, and trustee of Western Maryland College. TheBoarddeemed it quite fitting to honor Mr. McDaniel in this way.William Roberts McDaniel1861 - 194215

Jan TennJan Term 01 -02 proved to be unlike any other. Many plansfor traveling abroad were cancelled because of post 9/11uncertainties. A few brave students and faculty found fish andfun in Belize for 2 weeks. For those who were not a part of the tropical expedition, winter break was passed by working, spending time withfamily and traveling. But word travels fast and by the time thestudents were preparing to return, it was old news; WesternMaryland College day's were numbered. The college's namewas changing and following the announcement was confusion, disbelief, and disagreement. Petitions were made, anti -petitions were drawn; the decision made by President Coleyand the Board of Trustees stood firm. As students returnedfrom Jan Term it was clear that WMC's final semester was tobe savored.16

A Note From the EditorAnother year has come and gone, and I would like to take this moment to reflect on thispast year's events. The events of September 11,2001 will always be remembered. As students, faculty and staff, we will never forget where we were when those planes hit the World TradeTowers, the Pentagon and crashed in Pennsylvania. The amount of emotion felt throughout theworld that day did not go unnoticed. It was amazing to witness how many countries mournedwith us. As a student of Western Maryland College, it was wonderful and comforting for me tosee our school and community pull together in a time of need. .Then in January, the announcement came that the Board of Trustees was planning to changethe name of the school. A lot of time and energy was put forth by all that were involved. Duringan on-campus party on May II 'h, the new name was announced. As of July 1,2002, WesternMaryland College will only exist in our hearts and minds. The new name for the institution isMcDaniel College, home of the Green Terror. My deepest appreciation to all who have contributed to this book. A special thank yougoes to Wes, Aimie, Ivy, Sarah, Crystal, and Amanda for all of their hard work and dedication.Without their help, this book would not have been possible.I would also like to extend my deepest thanks to our yearbook advisor, Susan Cullison, forall of her hard work, time, energy and dedication. She put in numerous after-work hours to helpmake this book a success.I wish the best ofluck to the class of2002. May you be successful in all you do. No matterwhere life may lead you always remember that you are welcome on the Hill. As for those ofyou who still remain on the Hill until your graduation day, keep working hard and strive for success. And to all of the Western Maryland College community, remember that although this maybe the last time we shout out "WMC" at the top of our lungs, it is still the same institution it hasalways been-dedicated to providing a nurturing learning environment for its students. Good luckto everyone and may you have a bright future.E1J.iJm'Melanie PulleySJnjJWes BedsworthIvy DanielSarah LinthicumAmanda LoftonAimieSmithCrystal TurnerA.dri£ill:.Susan Cullison
