Tag 125 HeavyOne <strong>of</strong> the feature classes at <strong>Ipswich</strong> along with the Light class, and both were to qualifyprior to the first heat, Heavy, and the presence <strong>of</strong> National Champion Brendan Nelson puteveryone on their best behaviour. After qualifying was over the first two heats <strong>of</strong> racingwould start with Klinton Hancey (#21) the fastest with a 51.168 lap time, second NationalChamp Brendan Nelson (#1 with a 51.332 lap - the closest driver to a full time kart racer thatI know <strong>of</strong> – I am sure there are more) third fastest Scott Howard (#3) with a 51.653 lap,eight tenths <strong>of</strong> a second covering the top ten. Heat one saw a great battle develop betweenBrendan Nelson and Klinton Hancey with Nelson getting the better <strong>of</strong> the dice to procurefirst place in the heat, Hancey went on to finish second with Scott Howard third and PatrickMaher (#8) fourth along with Ashley Lester (#90) in fifth starting from P8 with a 51.790 lapin qualifying, to pick up three or four places in a quality field such as this was a very goodresult indeed. Heat 2 started from the same grid positions as qualified, Brendan Nelson withanother win from Klinton Hancey and in third Grant Gatland (#75) who qualified with a51.744 lap. The pre-final was a copy <strong>of</strong> the second heat <strong>of</strong> racing for first and second, achange in third with Ben McKinley (#14) moving forward to make his present felt, AshleyLester finishing fourth (third in the second heat) in front <strong>of</strong> Shawn McNamara (#95 – wh<strong>of</strong>inished fourth in the second heat). The final saw Brendan Nelson at his National Championbest with a comfortable win over Klinton Hancey (both these drivers finishing the day fourfrom four in first and second position respectively) third place to Ben McKinlay (we lookforward to more great battles between these three over the ensuing months), again afterpoints counted the final results stood as Brendan Nelson first from Klinton Hancey secondand Ashley Lester third, Ben McKinlay finishing in fourth position, just <strong>of</strong>f the podium.RookiesA smaller field than we have come to expect after 2012 record attendances, but twelveyoungsters ready as ever to battle for the win. Heat one saw Jayden Gollan (#6) run awayfrom the rest <strong>of</strong> the field from P2, Ryan Suhle (#5) who started from P8 drove through thefield to record a good second, third went too Josh Radford (#84) starting from P3.Thesecond heat was with the mandatory luck and reverse draw and the previous winner JaydenGollan starting from P8, Max Adams (#4) <strong>of</strong>f the front row alongside Ryan Suhle, with OliverBayliss (#46 – name ring any bells?,) and Josh Radford <strong>of</strong>f the second row then JarrodCostello (#47) and Benjamin Deissler (#78) with Josh Goddard (#25) P7 and NathanGallagher (#34) <strong>of</strong>f P9, we had three P Plate drivers, Daniel Murrell (#99P), Dillon Rhoda(#32P) and Samuel Poulsen (#28P) welcome boys to the <strong>Ipswich</strong> <strong>Kart</strong> <strong>Club</strong> and Rookies. Theheat progressed with Max Adams <strong>of</strong>f the front and taking the win, second was Ryan Suhle,two and two after two heats, and third to Jayden Gollan (similar drive as Ryan Suhle in theprevious heat, but from eighth to third) Points counted and the pre-final saw Jayden Gollan<strong>of</strong>f P1, Max Adams (after a fourth and a second) P2, Ryan Suhle <strong>of</strong>f P3 the Josh Radford fromJarrod Costello, they finished the pre-final with the number six kart from the number five


kart and Oliver Bayliss finishing third (worked it out yet? – Oliver is the son <strong>of</strong> Troy Bayliss,World Superbike Champion 2001, 2006 and 2008). The final results after the running <strong>of</strong> theFinal and points were added and worst points dropped finished with Jayden Gollan on thetop spot on the podium with Ryan Suhle second and even with a D.N.F. in the final, MaxAdams in third.Junior National LightGood numbers for the first <strong>of</strong> the year with twenty one drivers primed for the racing, heatone saw Harrison Oddie (#2) <strong>of</strong>f P2 lead for the first five laps with Cameron Shields (#73)starting <strong>of</strong>f P10 moving into the lead on lap six, William Brown (#31) who had been trailingShields for the first six laps moved into the lead on lap seven and remained in this positionfor the remainder <strong>of</strong> the heat, Cameron Shields dropped back to second and was to see theheat out in this position, Harrison Oddie (#2) picked up third after a good effort in thebeginning <strong>of</strong> the race. Heat two with the compulsory draw and reverse was to see JoshuaRogers (#92) <strong>of</strong>f P2, in great form take the win with a start to finish run, Cameron Shields(#73) moving forward from eighth through to sixth in lap six then fifth on lap seven andfinally second on the last lap, Nicholas Lane (#8) starting from P3, drove to second on laptwo remained in this position throughout until passed by Cameron Shields in lap seven t<strong>of</strong>inish in third. The pre-final was a good race with Cameron Shields (#73) leading after thefirst lap followed by William Brown(#31) Brown taking the lead on Lap 2, Joshua Rogers(#92) in third, then Harrison Oddie (#2) and Greg Gallagher(#34), Brown lead lap three,four, five and six before being passed by Joshua Rogers(#92),William Brown taking the leadback on the final lap to take the win from Josh Rogers who struggled with Cameron Shieldsthroughout the heat, Shields finally finishing third, with Oddie finishing in fourth fromGallagher in fifth. The final this time over twelve laps produced some fine racing, withWilliam Brown taking control right from lap one, the race between Brown with Josh Rogerstrailing went on throughout the final with Rogers jumping to the lead on the last lap to takethe win, Oddie, Shields and Gallagher pitched a battle royal for the minor placing with Oddiesecuring third birth in the final. After the worst was dropped the podium saw Joshua Rogers(#92) receive the major trophy from William Brown (#31) and Cameron Shields (#73).Tag Restricted LightThe largest field <strong>of</strong> the day saw some great action, the first heat got under way and MarkVroegop made a statement that it was his turn to take a win leading from lap two throughuntil the chequered flag, closely followed by Simon Pitt in second another drive from thesecond lap on, third and Christopher Orders followed a similar theme from start to finish.Donnelle Walden and Rachelle Dodd suffering D.N.F.’s early. Heat two and Rachelle Dodd(#16) drove magnificently to grab the win after the early leader Nigel Ward (#34) suffered aD.N.F. on lap six, Rachelle held <strong>of</strong>f a fast finishing Christopher Orders (#13) who also was tobe advantaged by Wards misfortune. Kyle Zink (#85) was fortunate to move up into thirdplace after running sixth for the majority <strong>of</strong> the race passing both Grahame Hall(#6) and


Morrissey relegated to fourth with Sorenson moving past Morrissey into fourth on lapeleven, Morrissey finishing in fifth, Brendan Nelson sixth after a pass from Sorenson in lapnine. Daniel Sirvent with an untroubled run in seventh, Dalton Ellery finishing in eighth,ninth to Thomas Pomroy after a pass on Sean Butcher in lap ten, and the top ten roundedout by Sean Butcher, well worth a mention eleventh Adam Briggs. The format being finalonly counts, the results stood after post-race technical inspection.Junior National Heavy.The last <strong>of</strong> the day saw Nicholas Andrews the <strong>Club</strong> Champion in this class, watching from thegrand stand obviously having a well-deserved rest after a great 2012. Heat one got underway with Jacob Bright (#88) <strong>of</strong>f P8, taking the winning pass on Ryan O’Sullivan (#21) on lapfour, Jordan Kidas (#2) moving past John Finch (#53) from fourth to third on lap six, Finchholding this position through until the end <strong>of</strong> the heat, Ryan O’Sullivan (#21) leading for thefirst three laps before the pass from Bright on lap three, relegated him back one spot, Kidasfinally getting the past on O’Sullivan (#12) to take second on lap seven. Heat two and JacobBright continued his form from the previous heat, Kidas fifth after lap one moved through t<strong>of</strong>ourth then third on lap three past Tom Davidson and Trenton Dunstan, Dean Weigmanback as far as eighth moved forward to fifth then fourth past Alexander Uzzell on lap six,John Finch as far back as tenth on lap one moving forward first past Ryan O’Sullivan with aD.N.F. in lap four then Alexander Uzzell on lap six to finish in sixth, the result was Brightfrom Kidas and Trenton Dunstan (#9) in third. Pre-final and Bright continued his formfinishing first, Jordan Kidas second and Ryan O’Sullivan finally getting up to third with a passon Tom Davidson in lap six. The final went the way that was expected with Jacob Brightcontinuing his streak to take the top spot from Jordan Kidas second the only real fight wasfor third with Trenton Dunstan able to better Ryan O’Sullivan on the final lap. Overall resultsafter the worst were dropped, Jacob Bright first, second to Jordan Kids and third to RyanO’Sullivan.That ends a great day <strong>of</strong> racing for the <strong>Ipswich</strong> <strong>Kart</strong> <strong>Club</strong> and the first <strong>Round</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Club</strong><strong>Championship</strong>; it is my intention to write a similar report for all rounds <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Championship</strong>throughout 2013, if I do not have your email address to send to directly you will find thisreport on www.sportsvoice.com.au until round 2.Bye for nowGe<strong>of</strong>f Salmon
