I am sure everyonehas been watching the events and supporting the AustralianTeam with great enthusiasm. It has meant some very earlymornings watching the medal events, however it’s a greatchance to bond and cheer together before the day begins. In allthis excitement, I wonder if you have visited the Early YearsOlympic display in the office foyer. The Early Years VisualArtists, wonderfully lead by Erica and Kitty ( who has replacedNicky while on Family Leave ), have been extremely busy theselast weeks in making sure the Olympic spirit is alive and welland this display certainly adds to the Olympic Spirit. We alsohave a very exciting time ahead with Erin Collins flying out toCanada to represent Australia in the World BaseballChampionships. We are so proud of Erin and her achievementsand feel very lucky to have a world class athlete on our staff. We wish her the very best of luck.To think we have come to the end of Week 3 and we havealready hosted visitors from other schools, participated in anumber of sporting events and have enjoyed some specialevents on both campuses. Last week Bill, Kerrie and I, had thepleasure of attending the Prep 100 Days of School celebration. We were greeted by many happy faces and joined in thebreakfast celebrations throughout the pod. What a fabulousachievement for both our Prep students and our staff. Theorganisation of the event was fantastic and the energy andenthusiasm of the students was wonderful. I commendeveryone who was involved in the organisation of this day. They certainly made the day very special for our Prep students. While I mention celebrations, it would be remiss of me not tohighlight the Blue Light Disco on Friday. The number ofsparkles, spikey hairdos and bling outfits that danced aroundthe Early Years gym on Friday night was amazing. Studentsfrom Prep to Year 6 made a great commitment to the event bycoming out into the cold and rain to participate in a great funnight. Students were dancing, laughing and generally having afabulous time enjoying each other’s company. Many staffmembers were moving to the beats and I thank them for theircommitment to the students by supporting the evening. Specialthanks go to Laura P and Amanda B for their leadership andorganisation of the evening event. This week our year 5 / 6 girls and boys football teamsparticipated in the Bridge Inn District Primary Sportstournament. Our students represented the school with greatpride and showed sportsmanship when playing against otherteams. It is a huge honour to be asked to represent the schoolin any team or activity and students should feel very privilegedto be selected to participate in teams. Part of being in any teamdoes include training and returning notices before the deadline, however it is unfortunate that some students do miss the finalopportunity to participate in an event due to something as sillyas forgetting to hand in their forms. Hopefully we havecemented this expectation within The Lakes community and thatstudents are now making a greater effort to bring back theirnotices and payments. Finally, I wish to remind you all that the school will not be openon Monday 6 th or Tuesday 7 th August as we have our LakesConference. This two day Conference will provide staff with asolid opportunity to continue sharing and developing PowerfulLearning processes, skills and understandings. Many of thestaff will be presenting outcomes from their student focusgroups and discussion around maintaining and further improvingoutcomes and student attitudes will be provided. Our LeadingTeachers have done a brilliant job in organising and preparingfor this two day event. We are extremely lucky to have staff ofsuch a high calibre at The Lakes.I wish you all a wonderful week and hope you enjoy all that youdo.Chris

ADVANCE NEWSLETTEROn the 25 th March 30 students and 3 staff involved in the Advance program attended their first camp for the year. Thestudents left school early Monday morning and travelled along quarry hills (hills surrounding The Lakes) to the lookoutpoint. It was a great view from the top with the group able to see from The Kinglake Ranges to the city skyline. Thestudents did a fantastic job on the hike that took close to 3 hours to complete. We eventually made our way to Nioka BushCamp in the Plenty Gorge National Park and set up camp for the night. We were extremely fortunate that we only receiveda small amount of rain during the day. Everyone spent the afternoon and night around the camp fire or visiting the hauntedchurch. The temperature overnight got as low as 2 degrees so everyone was up early to once again get around the fire. The students had to cook their own meals for the camp which was a great experience for them. Also for some it was theirfirst time camping. After completing our final walk on the Tuesday we arrived back at school a little cold and tired.Everyone enjoyed the experience and are really looking forward to our next camp later in the year.HPL Update! What a big end to Semester One HPL! The last few weeks of last semester saw the Year 9's complying their SCOPEYoung Ambassadors Bronze Award, and traveling to Highpoint Industries to spend the day working alongside people withboth physical and mental differingWhat a big end to Semester One HPL! The last few weeks of last semester saw the Year 9's complying their SCOPEYoung Ambassadors Bronze Award, and traveling to Highpoint Industries to spend the day working alongside people withboth physical and mental differing abilities. Our students did us proud and have really been able to take away a specialunderstanding of the ways in which people of differing abilities can lead very full and rich lives. In the second last week ofterm the Year 9's also participated in the Wheeltalk program which saw participating students playing Round Robinwheelchair basketball games and races. Again this proved to be a very enriching experience for all involved. Also in the second last week of term, Year 8 students participated in a Reach workshop (founded by the late Jim Stynes). All students involved were challenged to 'peel back their onion layers' and expose the person they really were, the valuesthey stood for and what motivated them in their lives. This was a very moving experience that bought many to tears at thehonesty and raw emotion that was shown. This semester we are again looking forward to continuing with the term rotations, and also preparing for Year 9 subjectselection and City Experience. This term teams have changed slightly in Year 7 with John, Zac, Katie and Bonnie being the core teachers and we areexcited to announce that Nicole will be focusing her Teacher Professional Learning project on further developing andenriching the HPL program across Years 7-9.Page - 5 -
