03/04_Skinners’ <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>Newsletter</strong> March 2011Skinners’ <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>Newsletter</strong> March 2011We had a great timelearning about differentcamera shots and how touse the filming equipment.We had a task to create afilm about anything.Inez MiszczykYoung Enterprise Day:Your School,Your BusinessOn Thursday 11th November7 business volunteers fromYoung Enterprise cameto Skinners’ <strong>Academy</strong> todeliver an exciting enterpriseworkshop ‘Your School,Your Business’.The aim of the workshop was to allowstudents to explore our new <strong>Academy</strong>,understand how our <strong>Academy</strong> is like abusiness, and to develop enterprise skills.During the day students workedtogether to identify and unlock theirenterprise potential.The workshop was aimed at inspiringstudents to develop enterprising skills,attitudes and behaviours including:• Confidence and a can-do attitude• Communication and presentation skills• Creative thinking and problem solving• Teamwork and leadership• Resilience, persistence and respondingto changeAchieversInternationalStudents currentlytaking part in enterpriseenrichment have beenselected to participate in anew enterprise programme‘Achievers International’Achievers International is an onlineenterprise project for students, encouragingthem to understand international trading.Students will have the opportunity to forma company and import and export goodswith our partner schools in Malaysia,India, Zambia, Berlin and Georgia (USA).Students will gain an insight into howbusinesses are formed and managed,and increase their awareness andunderstanding of other cultures andcitizenship. It provides a practicallearning context for teaching businessstudies and modern languages, andpromotes the development of ICT skills.YoungChamber CouncilRepresent LondonA Group of 15 Sixth Formstudents have been selectedthis year to participate in anew enterprise programme‘Represent London 2020’.Represent London is an employabilityproject that gives young people theopportunity to gain a wide range ofemployability skills at participatingLondon Legacy companies and to makethe best use of all the opportunities thatthe Olympics will bring. Our studentswill engage in a range of increasinglydifficult modules that provide anexcellent opportunity to enhance theirlife skills and will help them to becomeambassadors for East London.During Games time, our students willhave the opportunity to put their newskills into practice as a volunteer guideeither as an official 2012 volunteer or as aLondon Legacy volunteer.As part of the project our students will berequired to attend several workshops atleading business organisations includingFrench corporate investment bank,Société Générale, London City Airport,ELBA (East London Business Alliance)and the BBC.‘We had a great time at the BBC learningabout different camera shots and howto use the filming equipment. We gotthe chance to make a short film aboutsomething that interested us. This gaveus new information and basic knowledgeabout how to make a film. We were alsogiven a brand new flip camera to useat school. We are going to make a filmabout our experience on the RepresentLondon project.’Inez Miszczyk,Year 12Selda KurtulduBusiness Community Links CoordinatorThroughout the day students puttogether a personal development plan,learned about enterprise capabilities,took part in a problem solving activityand discussed bullying and how torespect one another. The year 7s’ finishedthe day by presenting to the businessvolunteers and their year group.Many thanks to the Young Enterprisebusiness volunteers and to Skinners’<strong>Academy</strong> staff for their help and support.Selda KurtulduBusiness Community Links CoordinatorEu ComeniusTurkish ProjectSkinners’ <strong>Academy</strong> has beensuccessful in securing funding throughthe EU Comenius for an internationalproject partnering with Lutfi EgeAnadolu Ogretmen College inDenizli, Turkey.Students will participate in a textilesand onyx project with Lutfi EgeCollege which will run for 2 years.Students will be researching andcomparing the history of art, textilesand the onyx industry in Turkey andthe UK.Building our international schoolpartnership will increase studentawareness and understanding of ourcultures and enhance one of our keyaims of global citizenship. It willprovide a practical learning contextfor teaching textiles, design andtechnology, art, business studies,modern languages , and promote thedevelopment of ICT skills.As part of the project Mr ZaferDumlupinar & Mr Mustafa Zeybek,teachers from Lutfi Ege College,visited us in December.Following on from their visit 206th Form students from Skinners’<strong>Academy</strong> will be visiting the Lutfi Egein February for 10 days.Ms Selda KurtulduThe Young Chamber Council representsthe <strong>Academy</strong> and is committed to localissues within the community and theschool to make both a better place.The projects it has been working onthis term include producing a surveyon Family Service and feeding backtheir findings to ABM, our in- housecaterers and a project with Transport forLondon looking at bus services in theborough of Hackney and how they canbe improved.
