4 IEEE VICTORIAN SECTION ANNUAL REPORT 2012Chairman's ReportGreg AdamsonOUTSTANDING results for 2012 included the launching ofa Student Branch at Swinburne University of Technology,the creation of a Vehicular Technology chapter, a newseries of Tutorial Workshops, and co-sponsoring a multinationalconference on Technology and Society in Asia.But for me, the really satisfying result was to see manynew volunteers joining our Section, Chapter and StudentBranch committees, making their respective contributionswith new ideas and a serious commitment to IEEE.Membership for the end of December for the past threeyears has grown from 1,942 and 1,936 in 2010 and 2011,to 2,007 in 2012. Australia represents the seventh largestcountry in terms of IEEE membership, and Victoria makesup approximately 25% of the national total. Our chaptersand affinity groups have convened an excellent range ofTechnical and Special Interest meetings, consistent withour recent practice of organising around 50 activities peryear. The latter include those run in collaboration withEngineers Australia and other learned societies.A major initiative for our Section was the cosponsoringof an international conference, "Technologyand Society in Asia", jointly with IEEE Singapore Sectionand the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology(SSIT). This was the first time we have engaged in aninter-section activity of this type outside Australia, withthe complexities of such an enterprise reflected in a smallfinancial loss. Nevertheless, in networking terms, theconference was an outstanding success. Invited speakersincluded Infosys founder NL Narayana Murthy, and formerJapan head of nuclear safety, Prof Kenkichi Hirose. Theirpresentations were highlights of the conference.At home, we had our own highly effective networkingevents: a student dinner in September 2012, and ourAnnual Dinner in December. Special thanks to long-timevolunteer Anthony Gascoigne for organising theseactivities, which we hope to repeat in the coming year.During 2013 I will continue as Chair, along withundertaking the role of Vice-President of IEEE SSIT.Within the Section, priorities include supporting activitiesin Tasmania, engaging longer-term members to train ournewer volunteers, and building the public profile of IEEEin Victoria. I want to extend my sincere thanks to all ourmembers and active volunteers who have made 2012 anotable and successful year, and my task such anenjoyable one.GREG ADAMSONSection Chair 2012g.adamson@ieee.orgWe have had expressions of interest in the formationof a Systems, Man and Cybernetics chapter, and it ispossible that this new venture will proceed during 2013.We now have fourteen specialist chapters in our Section.Our six Student Branches had a very active year, allorganising interesting and successful activities. Around 70people attended a social event marking the foundation ofthe Swinburne Student Branch. A series of hands-ontutorial workshops was launched by La Trobe Universityand La Trobe Student Branch, with later support fromMonash Student Branch and VU Student Branch, both ofwhom hosted similar events.

Since no positionreceived more than one nomination, no formal electionswere required. Treasurer – Anthony GascoigneCongratulations to each of the successful candidates.Also, thanks are due to all outgoing members of the 2012Committee for their valuable service during the past year.Annual General MeetingTHE Annual General Meeting of IEEE Victorian Sectionwas held at the Metropolitan Hotel, William Street,Melbourne, on 12th December, 2012. About sixty (60)IEEE Members and their partners and invited Guestsattended, including many student members. A briefreview of section activities was presented by SectionChair Greg Adamson, augmented by a summary offinancial results by Section Treasurer Enn Vinnal.#During the evening, Cash Awards were presented tothe two winners of the Student Paper Travel GrantCompetition (see details under Student Paper Awards,overleaf). Also, Certificates of Commendation werepresented to outstanding Student volunteers and otherswho made a notable contribution to section affairs during2012.Special thanks are due to all who assisted in theorganisation and running of the AGM, and especially EeHui Lim and Mehrnaz Shoustarian.Membership DevelopmentTHE Section membership growth during the past year isshown in the table below. Victorian Section now hastwelve (12) IEEE Fellows, which is twice the number ofjust three years ago, and more in keeping with academicand professional attainments in Victoria and Tasmania.Seventeen (17) Members were elevated to SeniorMember grade, indicating a favourable response to our"SM" promotional programs; and the Graduate StudentMember grade continues to attract young graduates,displaying a growth of 17% in 2012.Both Associate Member grade and Studentmembership decreased during the year, reflecting theknown volatility of both groups. 6 IEEE VICTORIAN SECTION ANNUAL REPORT 2012Student BranchesWE are pleased to record the formation in August 2012 ofan IEEE Student Branch at Swinburne University ofTechnology (SUT), based at the Hawthorn campus. Thereare now six (6) Student Branches within the geographicboundaries of IEEE Victorian Section. A summary ofactivity in each of these Branches appears in a latersection of this Annual Report.ChaptersFish Dish à la Metropolitan HotelLATE in 2012, we received approval for a new VictorianSection Chapter affiliated with the Vehicular TechnologySociety (VTS). There are now fourteen (14) technicalchapters within IEEE Victorian Section.The Section Committee has identified VehicularTechnology as one of the strategic growth sectors of theIEEE as a Learned Society. There have already beenstrong expressions of support for the new chapter fromboth academic/research rganization and industry.Activities already planned and/or undertaken by the newchapter are described in a later section of this AnnualReport.In other chapter news, The Education Chapter and theElectromagnetic Compatibility Chapter both held therequisite number of technical meetings during the year,after several years of marginal or zero activity. Activityreports by these chapters are found in a later segment ofthis Annual Report. We look forward to the furthercontributions of these subunits during 2013.All our Chapters are constantly in need of activevolunteer support. If you have specialist interests and areable to assist in the planning and rganization oftechnical activities, your Chapter will be very pleased tohear from you! If there is currently no Victorian Chapteroperating in your field of interest, there are often othermeans of approach available. Members in such a situationare urged to discuss their ideas with a member of theSection Executive (see contact details appended to thisAnnual Report).#Students continue to participate widely in IEEEVictorian Section affairs, and in recognition of this fact, aninformal dinner for Student Officers was held inMelbourne in September 2012. This event allowedvolunteers from the various student branches to becomebetter acquainted. Also, students had an opportunity todiscuss their activities with senior members of the SectionCommittee, in a low-key social environment. The dinnerwas deemed a notable success and is likely to become acalendar event in future years.A further student initiative during 2012 was thelaunching of a series of tutorial workshops on practicaltopics not normally covered (in any depth) in theconventional undergraduate program. Initially led byLa Trobe Student Branch, several other Student Branchesare now planning similar workshops in 2013. The StudentActivities Coordinator, Victorian Section, will providecoordination and advisory services in this ongoingproject. Further details are given in the Student Branchessegment of this Annual Report.Student Paper Awards#THE Student Paper Travel Grant competition providesfinancial support to IEEE Student Member authors wishingto present accepted papers at IEEE (or approved non-IEEE) conferences. Due to minor administrativedifficulties, there was only one such competition heldduring 2012 (normally two), and two awards were madeto partly compensate for this. The successful authors andtheir papers were:-Isuru Wijesundera (University of Melbourne), for "AComputationally Efficient Framework for StochasticPrediction of Flood Propagation";Md. Kamal Hossain (Deakin University), for "Multi-Layer Implantable Antenna for Closed-Loop Deep-Brain Stimulation System".

7 IEEE VICTORIAN SECTION ANNUAL REPORT 2012The above authors received cash grants of $850 each.The judging panel once again commented favourablyon the generally high standard of entries received in thiscompetition.Sponsorship and Prizes#THE Section continued its support of Student Project workat several universities. Grants were made in support ofthe Endeavour program at the University of Melbourne,the EnGenius exhibition at RMIT University, and theHooper Memorial Prize presentations at La TrobeUniversity.Although the Section is not by its nature andconstitution a grants-giving body, we are pleased tomake limited contributions in selected areas, consistentwith our own strategic objectives, where our Bylaws andour available financial resources permit.Uplink#FOUR (4) issues of the Section newsletter Uplink werepublished during 2012, including a Special Issue markingthe centenary of formation of the Institute of RadioEngineers (IRE) in 1912, one of the two foundingsocieties of the IEEE. The influence of the early radioengineers on present day IEEE technologies has beenquite profound. Likewise, the rganizational structure ofthe IEEE owes much to its IRE antecedents.Uplink is edited by Alan Harvey and produced by PeterBarrett and other volunteers. Regular and occasionalcontributions to this publication are always in demand,and photographs of local events of interest to IEEEmembers are particularly welcome. Contributed materialshould be sent to Dr Harvey at the contact email addressgiven at the end of this Annual Report.Section Administration#THE rapid growth in recent years in the number ofvolunteers active in the Section has continued in the yearunder review. And, while this is an excellent thing in itselfthat prompts a very positive view of our future, it alsobrings inevitable problems in regard to the training andguidance of the new volunteers, many of whom have noprevious experience of IEEE affairs. The SectionCommittee is acutely aware of this problem, and plans toinvest in Leadership Training and purpose-developedHandbooks and Reference material, directed particularlyat our incoming Section Officers and volunteers, and alsohaving a more general application within the Section.Of course, we continue to seek new recruits, sincethere are always many more tasks requiring attentionthan people to perform them!IEEE members wishing to become involved in Sectionor Chapter affairs are encouraged to visit the IEEE Centreof Leadership Excellence at http://www.ieee.org/go/cle toobserve the many different volunteer roles available.Prospective volunteers in Victoria and Tasmania shouldcontact the Section by email to contact@ieeevic.org).IEEE Region 10 Activities#APART from the regular annual meeting of the IEEERegion 10 Committee at which Victorian Section wasrepresented by Section Chairman Greg Adamson, therewere no Regional activities of note during 2012. Details ofthe Technology and Society in Asia Conference, jointlyhosted by Victorian and Singapore Sections, appearelsewhere in this Annual Report.IEEE Global#THERE were no major global activities of the IEEE inwhich we participated during 2012. We now look forwardto the next Sections Congress, to be held in Amsterdam,Netherlands, in August 2014.At the last such Congress held in San Francisco, CA, in2011, more than 1000 delegates attended, together withthe IEEE President and several Vice-Presidents, RegionalDirectors, and senior IEEE staff members.Sections Congresses are convened every three (3)years and provide one of the principal mechanisms forworldwide collaboration and interaction within the IEEE.Also, many delegates benefit from the workshops anddiscussion sessions held at this forum.#

8 IEEE VICTORIAN SECTION ANNUAL REPORT 2012SECTION FINANCES_____________________________________________________A BRIEF summary of Victorian Section finances is given inthe table opposite. For further details, please refer to theConsolidated Accounts appended to this Annual Report.Section financial results for 2012, on an ex-GST basis,show a small operating profit. Both expenditure andrevenue were less than the previous year, by 20% and14% respectively.Total expenditure for the year was $22,136, whichreflects a continuing strong level of activity throughoutthe Section. This expenditure benefited Student, Chapterand Section activities in almost equal shares.widely in Australia.IEEE Headquarters has assigned the Section a notional'reserve allocation expense' of $13,072. This is theSection’s contribution towards corporate liabilities inrespect of the IEEE Defined Benefits Pension Plan. Thisamount is held within our Section accounts at the presenttime, but it is encumbered and cannot be disposed of bythe Section.In summary, the Section had a nearly balanced budgetin 2012. We have maintained our financial reserves andgenerated Interest that significantly augmented IEEErebate receipts, so allowing a wide variety of activity tobe undertaken.In the coming year, we will again be examiningprospective new sources of income to support andaugment traditional sources. Financial Accounts for the conference have yet tobe finalised.In 2012, our MTT/AP Chapter acquired $38,267, beingthe IEEE share of the profit from the IEEE Asia-PacificMicrowave Conference. Outlinedetails are given below.2012-05-23: Our first event was a presentation by DrDaniel Taft from the hearing aid company Blamey &Saunders, Melbourne. His topic was "Australian-Invented Digital Signal Processing and End-UserApplications for Hearing Aids". This was a veryinteresting and informative talk that described originallocal developments in hearing aid design. An attentiveaudience of over 20 persons attended. The venue wasRMIT University.2012-10-09: The second talk, ”Aspects of ComputerBased Handwritten Document Recognition”, was givenat Deakin University, Burwood, and was organisedjointly with the SSIT Chapter. The presenter was DrAlan Harvey. Reliable recognition of handwritten wordscan be a formidable task, particularly when the lexiconis unconstrained, but improved algorithms and greatercomputing power have led to steady improvements inperformance. Modern techniques include slope detection(both vertical and horizontal), and various forms of textsegmentation. Processing can be either online or offline.We had 16 attend this lecture, which was relayed live tothe Deakin Waurn Ponds campus in Geelong.Other activities of the Chapter during the yearincluded organising a tour of the Australian Synchrotronfacility in Clayton for RMIT Students (see separatereport of the RMIT Student Branch).As part of my duties as Section Vice Chair, a monthlymeeting of the Section Committee was chaired and twoSection Planning Meetings were convened.ALAN HARVEY, Chapter ChairCommunications Chapter#and one promotional event.2012-08-01: The first event was a seminar by Dr.Kerry Hinton, Deputy Director of the Centre for EnergyEfficient Telecommunications at the University ofMelbourne. Dr. Hinton’s presentation was entitled“Network Energy Efficiency: Will telecommunications beSustainable?”. He addressed the issues of powerconsumption in the Internet, including the predictedgrowth from the “Internet of Things” and CloudComputing. Twenty-eight people attended this lecture.2012-08-31: The Chapter, together with theUniversity of Melbourne Student Branch, jointly held apromotional barbecue for undergraduate students,postgraduate students and staff of the university. Theevent was very well attended and our guests includedthe Victorian Section Chair and the Head of theDepartment of Electrical and Electronics Engineering atUniMelb. Three books were given away as “lucky draw”prizes, and this gesture was very well received by thestudents. The total attendance was 50.2012-10-18: In the final event for the year, weorganised a lecture by Thor North, Senior Associate atFreehills Patent Attorneys. His talk was entitled,“Patenting the Next Killer App: Would Your inventionStand the Novelty and Inventiveness Tests?”. Mr. Northhighlighted the significance of the two key attributesrequired in all successful patent applications, "novelty"and "inventive". Twenty people attended.PAUL FITZPATRICK, Chapter ChairComputational IntelligenceChapterCIS Chapter held two events during 2012.2012-07-11: This public lecture by Prof Seth Bullockof the University of Southhampton, UK, had the title,"Would 'worse' simulations fuel 'better' sciencepolicies?" It was held at the RMIT city campus.2012-09-05: The second event was a lecture by DrXiaodong Li of RMIT University on the topic, "SwarmIntelligence". We organised severaltechnical talks and visits for Dr Grier. Our mainactivities for the year are summarised below.2012-02-23: The Greening of Data Centres –Attendees 142012-03-08/09: Crowdsourcing and the expandingmodes of computation. This was a multi-venue lectureseries spread over two days – at the Metropolitan Hotel,Melbourne, Monash University, RMIT University and theUniversity of Melbourne, respectively. The totalattendance at these four locations was 174.2012-04-10: Applications of Video and Audio Analytics– Attendees 142012-07-31: Industry Event: Practitioner’s Night -Jointly with Engineers Australia) – Attendees 722012-08-15: The Problem with Big Data– Attendees 132012-10-03: Collaborating With the Crowd: SocialMedia and Web 2.0 for public sector engagement.Jointly with Engineers Australia) – Attendees 322012-12-30 Signal and image processing methods inpreservation of cultural heritage (30/12/2012) –Attendees 142012-12-30: Exploring information terrain –Attendees 32In addition to the foregoing, we were involved asTechnical Co-Sponsorship and Paper Reviewers withICCSE 2012, The 7th International Conference onComputer Science and Education. There were 90attendees at this event. We also organised a visit bymembers of IEEE Malaysia Section.Overall, it has been a successful year for IEEE VICComputer Chapter. Our 2013 program is already takingshape, and we hope to include a major internationalconference in Melbourne, organised jointly with theComputer Chapter of IEEE Malaysia Section.Further details of our 2012 activities and our plansfor 2013 are found on the Chapter website atwww.ieee.org.NASIR HASSAN, Chapter ChairEducation ChapterAFTER an inactive period of several years, the IEEEEducation Society Chapter resumed operations inNovember 2012 at a special general meeting of Chaptermembers, when Paul Junor of RMIT University wasformally installed as Chapter Chair.2012-11-27: Our first and only chapter activity for theyear was a joint meeting with Engineers Australia atEngineering House, North Melbourne, when ProfessorRoger Hadgraft of RMIT University presented on thetopic "Reinventing the University". There were twenty(20) present at this lecture.Planning is currently underway for a comprehensiveprogram of activities in 2013. We currently have fiftyfiveactive members registered in the Chapter, and ofcourse, we will warmly welcome additions to thisnumber.All members of the IEEE Education Society residentin Victoria/Tasmania automatically become members ofthe Victorian Section Education Chapter. Also, we arealways happy to hear from prospective new volunteerswilling to contribute to the running of the chapter.PAUL JUNOR, Chapter ChairElectromagnetic CompatibilityChapterWE held three technical events during 2012.2012-02-23: "Decoupling PCB's for EMC andFunctionality in the Real World". 14 IEEE VICTORIAN SECTION ANNUAL REPORT 2012Engineering in Medicine & BiologyChapterEMBS Chapter organised three presentations in 2012.2012-03-27: The first event was a lecture held atMonash University, Clayton, on the topic, "Advances inMulti-Electrode Recording Technology and Implicationsin Research". The presenter was Mr. Kian Torab,Technical Specialist at Blackrock Microsystems, Inc.,USA. Attendees were given an in-depth review of recentadvances in the field of electro-physiology based onclinical (human) studies, and also on large and smallanimal research.This was a free public seminar supported by bothIEEE Victorian Section and the Monash Vision Group.2012-11-19: The second presentation was by ProfDavid Liley from Cortical Dynamics Ltd and SwinburneUniversity and was held at Engineers Australia, VictoriaDivision, in North Melbourne. Over a number of years,Prof Liley has developed a mean-field modellingapproach to the analysis of large-scale electrical activityof the brain. This has found important utility in thecharacterisation of anaesthesia fromelectroencephalograms. The talk outlined the model, itstranslation into the Brain Anaesthesia Response depthof-anaesthesiamonitor (BAR Monitor), and its perceivedadvantages compared to existing approaches. Clinicaltrials performed as at the date of the presentation havegiven promising results. This talk was organised jointlywith the Signal Processing Chapter.SAMAN HAGHGOOIE, Chapter ChairMicrowave Theory &Techniques/Antennas &Propagation, Joint ChapterMTT/AP Chapter held three technical talks in 2012.#2012-02-15: Dr Heinz Wipf from Swiss Air NavigationServices Ltd presented the first talk and the title of histalk was “Navigation Signals and AntennaMeasurements in Multipath. Thirty-onepersons attended.2012-11-13: Also of special interest was apresentation by Frank Bodi and Ee Hui Lim from Silcar'sMission Critical Assets Group, entitled "AC versus DCPower Distribution – A 21st Century Perspective". Thepresenters revisited one of the fundamental issuesgoing back to the dawn of the electricity supplyindustry: should electric power be distributed in AC orDC form? The 21st century perspective is very differentfrom that of earlier times, not least because of theproliferation of computers and other moderntechnological devices. Such loads presently convert theincoming AC power to DC, so why not provide thepower in DC form in the first place? The presenterswere very well versed on their topic and gave a highlyengaging overview. This event was held at MonashUniversity, Clayton. There were 37 attendees.For 2013, PES chapter is currently planning aprogram of activities including: power system recoveryafter significant disruption; continuous monitoring in a'smart grid' environment; and electrical fire risk. They were all held at theUniversity’s Bundoora Campus.2012-04-04: This was a Welcome BBQ held to attractnew members to the IEEE and our Branch, also towelcome the returning members from 2011.2012-05-03: This was our first tutorial workshop forthe year and was titled “Altium Designer for Beginners”,presented by Arun Borgio. Twenty-four attended thisworkshop, the maximum number allowed by thelicensing agreement. The event was very well received,and attendees came both from our student branch andthe wider Victorian Section. We plan to run a similar butmore advanced course on PCB design during 2013.2012-05-17: Our distinguished guest on this occasionwas Prof. Trevor Bird, CSIRO Chief Scientist andPresident of the IEEE Antennas & Propagation Society.Prof. Bird visited the university to inspect the nextgeneration of HF Radars, designated TIGER-3, beingdeveloped by the Department of Electronic Engineering.2012-06-14: Our second tutorial workshop for theyear, named "Solidworks for Beginners", was anevening event held from 5.00pm to 9.00pm in the BethGleeson Building. Fifteen people attended (again,capacity numbers due to licensing provisions). Thecourse director was Mr Adam Console, who hasextensive experience with Solidworks and threedimensionaldrafting, with Alex Stumpf acting asAssistant Tutor. Attendees included visiting studentsfrom the University of Melbourne and RMIT as well as LaTrobe students, and there were three visitors fromoutside industry. We treated all attendees to a latedinner and drinks, courtesy of IEEE Victorian Section.2012-07-11: This event was a technical seminarpresented by Dr Pavlo (Pasha) Ponomarenko, who is aprofessional research associate at the University ofSaskachewan in Canada. Dr Ponomarenko's topic was"A Decade of Research Using SuperDARN Radars". Theseminar was attended by physicists and engineers fromseveral departments at La Trobe and was particularlywell received.2012-08-01: Our second semester BBQ was asuccessful social event and a great "catch up"opportunity for our members. We had over 40 peopleattend, and several new members signed up for theIEEE and our Student Branch.2012-10-04: Our third tutorial workshop for the yearwas “Matlab for Beginners”, presented by SelvaMurugesan. This covered the basics of Matlab andconsidered applications for digital signal processing.Fifteen people attended, including two representativesfrom industry. Attendees were again treated to a latedinner and drinks, courtesy of the IEEE.2012-11-30: The final event for 2012 was a socialdinner attended by more than 20 people. As to the events organised bythe Branch during the year, a brief summary is givenbelow.2012-03-30: This was a "Welcome to IEEE" BBQdirected particularly at new students arriving at theMonash Clayton campus. We explained the operationsof our Branch and the benefits of IEEE StudentMembership.2012-06-12: Tour of the Australian Synchrotronfacility in Clayton. It was a great privilege to visit thelargest synchrotron in the Southern Hemisphere. Wewere very impressed by the cutting-edge technologyand the opportunities provided for collaborationbetween scientists all over Australia.2012-08-02: IEEE Monash University Student Branchsuccessfully held a CST Tutorial Workshop, in line withsimilar activities pioneered by La Trobe UniversityStudent Branch. There were eight bookings, and most

The majority feedback from students indicatedthat more detail may be required on parameterdesigning. Finally, we are pleased to acknowledge thesupport received from CST, including free classmaterials distributed to attendees.2012-09-07: IEEE Students versus Staff SoccerGame. This social game was played at the MonashSports Centre in Clayton. It was nice to see that manyacademics turned up for the event, and it was a greatopportunity for students and staff to get to know oneanother outside the classroom.2012-11-02: Industrial Talk: "The ITU-R StandardsDevelopment Process, and the Benefits of Participationby Australia". This presentation was by our IndustryMentor, Les Davey, who heads his own consultancypractice. It broadened our knowledge of theopportunities provided by ITU-R Standards workgroups,and the benefits of participating in and contributing tothis work.2012-11-02: IEEE Public Lecture, "NBN Update". Thistechnical presentation was made by James Park andwas inspiring for both students and outside researchersand specialists. It was interesting to learn what isactually happening in the multi-year NBN project.2012-11-19: IEEE Monash Student Branch AGM. Theincoming Student Branch officers for 2013 were electedat this meeting. Apart from the business transacted, itwas also an enjoyable social occasion when studentmembers got to know their new executive committeethat will be representing them in 2013.Finally, we organised two Career Guidance Sessionson the 2nd and 16th of November, respectively. Thesewere held under the guidance of our Industry Mentor,Les Davey. Each participant had earlier sent his/her CVto Mr. Davey, and in the personal interviews theyreceived counselling on the CV content and their careeroptions. Overall, it was a verydynamic networking event for the IEEE studentmembers of Swinburne University, and a fitting markerof our emergence as a Student Branch.2011-10-15: This was a Pizza Party social event andinformation session, joint with the SwinburneEngineering Society. We shared our views and ideaswith members and encouraged new IEEE studentmembers to join in our Branch activities.2011-10-30: We hosted a guest lecture by Dr.Nursuriati Jamil (Liza) from Malaysia on the topic,“Signal and Image Processing Methods in thePreservation of Cultural Heritage” (joint with the IEEEComputer Chapter). After the talk, we took theMalaysian party on a tour of the Hawthorn campus, andthey expressed interest in ongoing collaboration withSUT.2011-12-05: We were involved in organising aninternational Seminar, “Plug in 4 Power”. SwinburneUniversity of Technology, together with SAE Australasiaand Auto CRC, hosted this event, which showcasedrecent research and development in electric vehicletechnology across Australia and overseas. We hadsponsorship by the Victorian Government and the IEEEVehicular Technology Victorian chapter. The event alsoincluded an Exposition of electric vehicles, newinitiatives and technologies, and charginginfrastructures. Assoc. Prof. Rivethas specialised in the design of RFIC's, mainly forSoftware Radio applications. He discussed the generalSoftware Radio concept, which is claimed to offer lowpower, low cost, reconfigurable systems. He describedan alternative one-chip solution able to handle any RFstandard over a frequency range of 0 to 5 GHz. Thispresentation gave us an insight into electronics researchin France and was a great introduction to analog-RFsystem design.2012-07-12: Tutorial Workshop, “Using the IEEELatex Templates for Conference and Journal Papers”.We had an attendance of 17 people. Almost everyonewas an IEEE student member and there were severalVictoria University students and staff. We only had twoindustry people, so we decided not to charge anyone aregistration fee.

This was a technical presentation byDr. Shane Spiteri, who graduated from VictoriaUniversity in 2003. He initially planned to pursue aresearch career and this led him and two colleagues toset up a company in Portugal. In 2008 he obtainedemployment as a Senior RF Engineer at Ericsson. He iscurrently a Senior RF Engineer at T-Force, contractingwith the AT&T Indoors Group in Chicago. Dr Spiteridescribed his career moves since graduating and gavesome useful advice to those just starting out on theircareers.Apart from the above activities, our Student Branchheld its annual elections on August 24, 2012.
