Thecelebration was held atCrown Casino and wouldhave given him a chance torenew acquaintances withplayers and officials he hadknown over the years. At least that was histhinking until he opened theinvitation — to find that hewas expected to pay $750 justto attend the function! As he lived interstate, hewould have had to add about$250 in airfares and another$150 for accommodation, which would add up to anexpensive night.Needless to say, he declinedthe invitation.Mind you, he was not allthat keen to attend, becausethere would not be manythere from his era.He had found that atprevious Richmond reunionsnot a great many of today’splayers and officials had beenthat interested in the playerswho appeared in the Tigerjumper with Jerv back in thelate 1940s.Perhaps not as well knownas his brother Ray, who was astar centreman for Richmondand later for Tasmania, Jervwas one of only four CoastalPeterLyonsPeter’s Peoplefootballers, who played forTasmania in the 1947 ANFCcarnival in Hobart. The others were player andcoach of East DevonportLindsay Webb, stillconsidered an icon, formerLatrobe coach Reg Castlesand another former EastDevonport coach BernieWaldron, who had come tothe Coast from VFL club,Richmond. After that carnival, Jerv andthe brilliant Arthur Hodgsonwere the only twoTasmanians to play in theVFL. Jerv with Richmondand Arthur with Carlton.Jerv played 33 senior gameswith the Tigers during theJack Dyer years, before beingattracted by the morelucrative role of coachingfootball. He left Richmond to coachVictorian FootballAssociation club Moorabbinand stayed there for a year.He returned to Tasmaniaafter being appointed coach ofNTFA club Scottsdale. In 1952Jerv took Scottsdale to thegrand final against City,LOCAL LEGEND: Jervis Stokeswhich was coached by BobMiller. However, when theScottsdale players reachedYork Park, where it was tohave been held, they foundthe ground under water andthe match was put off untilthe following Saturday.Unfortunately, Scottsdalehad lost its edge in that weekand went down to City byabout two goals. He then moved back toVictoria, where he spent thenext six years coaching in thestrong Latrobe Valley League. The first four of these hewas in charge of Moe, withwhom he won a Premiership, and the next two withTrafalgar. He thought hisfootball career was over andcame back to Devonport toretire, but was talked intocoaching Devonport for oneseason, before calling it a day.Tasmanian LiberalsFOR ASSISTANCEPLEASE CONTACT:6421 7930jeremy.rockliff@parliament.tas.gov.auwww.jeremyrockliff.com.au47b Best Street, DevonportGet gassed up!For Fastpromptdeliveryon allyour gasneedsContact your local supplier on13 78 72Devonport Times July 2008 Page 74036974 GL

NEWS FROM DEVONPORT CITY COUNCILA moment with the MayorDevonport Mayor, Ald Lynn Laycock.Aerobics added to relocated gym.Devonport City Council’s weightgymnasium in Forbes Street, hasoutgrown its premises in the squashcourt building and will be relocatedto the table tennis centre within thenext few days.Recreation Centre manager, SteveBrown, said the relocation wasnecessary since Council recentlypurchased six pieces of cardioexercise equipment. The present gymnasium did nothave the room to accommodate theadditional equipment. He said the gymnasium currentlyattracted between 80 and 120 regularclients, with 540 having registered asmembers in recent years. The new equipment had beenpurchased from a $20,000 grant, which had been obtained by Councilthrough the Federal GovernmentDepartment of Health and Aging. There will be only minor dislocationto existing facilities, as thegymnasium would take up onlyabout half of the table tennis centre.Council would erect a curtain-typedivider.Little other work would be required, apart from laying high-density rubbertiles over the gymnasium floor. Thismaterial came from discarded car ortruck tyres.Steve said four table tennis tableswould be retained, which would besufficient to cater for people playingthat game. Members of the Realm ofGaming, who conduct a dungeonsand dragons-type session each week, could also be catered for in anothersection of the stadium.Steve added that the presentgymnasium, which provided onlyweight equipment, was definitely a“blokey” facility and the introductionof cardio equipment would make itmore attractive to females. But he stressed that the Councilfacility would not impact on privategymnasium operators, as there wasno intention to provide aerobicclasses or offer personal training.Rates for use of the Councilgymnasium varied from $6.80 forcasual use to $50.80 for monthlymemberships, with car holders beingable to access facilities as often asthey required. There was another charge of $45 for10 visits, which suited shift workers inparticular.Devonport City Council is pleasedto announce that an exciting newgraffiti education program was rolledout in Devonport schools last week. The Warner Group GraffitiEducation programme aims toenlighten students on the range ofconsequences that can result fromundertaking graffiti. It uses entertaining techniques to getthis message across to students.More than 1000 students from 10primary schools and high schoolshave been targeted and an additional2000 students will be involved in thenext three years.Warner Group’s Awareness GraffitiEducation programs are focussedon providing youth with the relevantIn addition the gymnasium offeredthree months, six months and 12months memberships, which wereeven less expensive.Steve said it was hoped to offer morecorporate memberships, such as theone enjoyed by the TT Line. Underthis arrangement, any employee ofthe Line could access the facilities atthe centre at any time.He said already many of them usedthe facilities and Council was keento attract even more corporateorganisations, as it was importantthat the facilities were used duringthe day.Steve added that not manyDevonport residents were aware ofthe amount of use the RecreationCentre had. He estimated that200,000 – or one in six ofDevonport’s population - had visitedDevonport City Council’s CommunityServices Director’s assistant, LeanneFrenchIt is only a part time job, but as thefront line for Councils CommunityServices Division, Leanne French, finds her days both full andinteresting. Her official position is ExecutiveAssistant to the Director, EvonneEwins, but Leanne sees herselfbasically as the person who doesher best to keep to a minimum thepressure on her immediate boss. She is the first point of contactfor the numerous social interestgroups in the community seekingsupport and advice from Counciland, as such, finds her work bothimmensely interesting and rewarding. As an employee of CouncilLeanne mentioned that she hasinformation they need to make betterinformed lifestyle choices in theirmost influential years.Consisting of a 45-minute interactiveperformance as well as student, teacher and police reinforcement, the programme aims to provide thestudents with an understanding ofthe social and economic costs ofvandalism, which must eventuallybe borne both by them and thecommunity generally. That the programme can be asuccess is evidenced by the dramaticreduction of graffiti in the City ofCasey (Victoria). In that city, nearly 100% of schoolsparticipated in the programme, which saw an 85% reduction in theincidence of new graffiti by the endof the second year with reductions, thus far, being maintained.“This important programmeencompasses a whole-of-communityapproach to reducing the incidentsof graffiti and vandalism across thecity and forms part of Council’sGraffiti Management Policy andPlan,” according to Mayor LynnLaycock.“Graffiti around the city isthe responsibility of the entirecommunity and I see thisprogramme as another step forwardin addressing this important issue.”The Devonport City Council, through the Community SafetyLiaison Group and the LighthouseProject (funded by the NationalCommunity Crime PreventionProgram), has funded the majorityof costs, with the schools providinga small contribution, the MayoraddedRec. Centre manager, Steve Brown, checks gymnasium equipmentthe facility in the past year.consecutive weeks we found that an“We took a head count at the average of 4000 had passed throughentrance to the stadium and in 41 the front door”, he said.Few dull moments for Director’s aidebeen supported and encouragedthroughout her career, which spansover ten years. Leanne initiallybegan in the role of reception, moved into various other roles whichhave had an administration coreincluding records, planning and nowhas brought her vast administrationskills to the Community Services.Leanne began with communityservices in 2006 and, in that time, has built up a great rapport withmany members of the community.“I have really enjoyed workingclosely with the community andimplementing new programs whichmeet the need of residents, this hasnot only made me aware of issueswithin our community and hasenabled me to think outside of thebox when juggling resources andpriorities” she said.Following Councils re-organisationof its administration, Leanne nowworks closely with the DevonportEntertainment and ConventionCentre, Imaginarium, the RegionalGallery, the Zone and the twoRecreation Centres, liaising closelywith Recreation DevelopmentManager and CommunityDevelopment Manager. The new role also consists of a rangeof administration which supports andvalue adds to the work undertakenwithin the Division.A great deal of the role is beingresponsible for the coordinationand communication between theDirector, staff and the community. Many issues which come across thedesk involve research, follow up andorganisation which is not alwayseasy due to the multitude of issueswhich come under the banner ofCommunity Services. The challenge for the future is to assistthe newly created Division in Councilto run as smoothly as possible.Leanne, a Devonport girl, waseducated at Geneva ChristianCollege, Latrobe before undertakinga course in administration at TAFE.However, six months into the course,Leanne obtained a position workingfor a financial adviser and stayedthere for three years, continuing herbusiness administration course on apart time basis.Married to Nigel, a hydraulictechnician , she also has the jobof bringing up their two daughtersIsabella, 5, and Eva, 3 and says sheis extremely blessed that her workcommitments fit in well with thefamily. She works a 20 hour week onMondays, Wednesdays and Fridaysenabling her to be at home on theother two days.4033556 BBDevonport Times July 2008 Page 25
