A simple and common example is mixing flour and water to form a dough.Issues and NotesLosh applies whether the result is a firm mixture, like a dough, or if the result is a thick batter. One may not use any liquid to bind the particles; this includes fruit juices, milk, baby formulaand oil.Generally, Losh only applies to the binding of small pieces. Therefore it would be permissible tomix banana slices and sour cream, as the banana slices are distinct.Losh: Nisinas Mayim & GibulThere are two aspects that one must be aware of when it comes to Losh. They are Gibul andNisinas Hamayim. Gibul is what we normally think of as kneading, the actual stirring or mixingof the particles and liquid. Nisinas Hamayim is the pouring of the water into the particles, wherethere is an immediate affect. For example, when one pours water into a bowl of baby cereals orfarina, many times there is an immediate reaction. The solids and the liquids combine orcoagulate.Jello and ShabbosThe is a dispute among the Poskim with regards to making jello on Shabbos. The ShmirasShabbos and the Be’er Moshe are of the opinion that it is prohibited to mix the water withpowder to create jello on Shabbos. 1 The Chazon Ish 2 however is of the opinion that in a case

KHAL AHAVAS YITZCHOKwhere when you mix the particles with the liquid and the particles dissolve in the liquid and onlylater congeals there is no issue of Losh. Therefore it would be no problem when one mixes thejello powder with water and it only later it turns into jello. However, one must be sure there areno Bishul issues when mixing the jello.Tuna and Egg SaladA common situation that comes up often is making tuna and egg salad on Shabbos. Someopinions are concerned that the mixture of the mayonnaise and tuna would constitute Losh. However, if the mixing is done in an unusual manner, such as mixing in a criss-cross motion, itwould be permitted. It is important to note that not every type of Shinui is Halachiclypermissible. Others are of the opinion that mixing mayonnaise and tuna would not constitute theMelacha of Losh since there is no real change in the mixture. In other words, all you have is amixture of mayo and tuna. With water and flour, on the other hand you have actually created adough.Preparing Baby CerealsEarlier we introduced the concept of Nisinas Mayim, where the mixture will begin to congealwith the pouring of the water into the baby cereal. Therefore, one should enact a Shinui at thetime where the water and cereal will initially join, namely, place the water in the bowl and onlythen add the cereal. Which is the reverse order in which the ingredients are normally added.Additionally, when actually mixing one should also employ a change and mix it in an unusualmanner using a criss-cross motion. One should be careful too have enough liquid so the resultingmixture will be a liquid (so that it pours) and not thick. 3Yeshivas Ohr Reuven - Annual DinnerPlease place your reservations and ads this week845-362-8362HonoreesParents of the Year: Eva & Shragi Kahana Guest of Honor: Ann & Pinny DavidmanHarbotzas Torah Award: Rabbi Daniel Coren Alumnus of the Year: Lavi NeedlemanDinner Chairman: David LichtensteinMishkan Bezalel on BerashisNow Available for Pickupwww.MishkanBezalel.orgThe purpose of this publication is not to give a definitive halachic ruling, but rather to promote the study ofthe laws of Shabbos. By a thick mixture one may not use a knife or the handle of thespoon as a Shinui for mixing. For dedications, sponsorships or comments please email torah@ahavasyitzchok.org.
