<strong>Gav<strong>in</strong></strong> <strong>Khan</strong> Belief <strong>in</strong> the Magicable to identify wh<strong>at</strong>’s cultural and wh<strong>at</strong>’s not, because th<strong>at</strong>’s one <strong>of</strong> theth<strong>in</strong>gs th<strong>at</strong> a lot <strong>of</strong> Aborig<strong>in</strong>al teachers and leaders struggle with. A lot<strong>of</strong> my learn<strong>in</strong>g has occurred as a result <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g able to identify wh<strong>at</strong>’scultural and wh<strong>at</strong>’s not. Th<strong>is</strong> happens when you’re a new leader and you’redevelop<strong>in</strong>g new understand<strong>in</strong>gs with<strong>in</strong> a new context or situ<strong>at</strong>ion. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong>someth<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> experienced by people regardless <strong>of</strong> gender or culture orbackground. It’s very rare to come across people who are will<strong>in</strong>g and able to challengeor to <strong>of</strong>fer another po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view, or who will ask those questions th<strong>at</strong>help clarify th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> your own m<strong>in</strong>d. Sometimes you learn th<strong>at</strong> you havem<strong>is</strong>read their mean<strong>in</strong>g altogether. <strong>The</strong>se are the experiences th<strong>at</strong> a newleader has when they go <strong>in</strong>to a new community or school because there <strong>is</strong>so much you don’t know and there’s <strong>of</strong>ten not a cohort <strong>of</strong> Aborig<strong>in</strong>al peoplewho have been <strong>in</strong> those leadership positions. You can’t get th<strong>at</strong> uniqueperspective or feedback, and therefore learn<strong>in</strong>g and understand<strong>in</strong>g thecultural norms can be a really difficult process. Females new to leadershipprobably went through th<strong>is</strong> as well: “Am I be<strong>in</strong>g tre<strong>at</strong>ed th<strong>is</strong> way becauseI’m a female or simply because I’m a new leader?”Anyway, if I was to project myself ten years <strong>in</strong>to the future I wouldhope I’ve still got my health, because st<strong>at</strong><strong>is</strong>tically as an Aborig<strong>in</strong>al man itstarts to decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>at</strong> my age. I hope I would have done some study but alsoto be back <strong>in</strong> schools and have th<strong>at</strong> special contact as a leader work<strong>in</strong>gwith communities. So r<strong>at</strong>her than be<strong>in</strong>g a pure academic, I th<strong>in</strong>k I’d liketo have a balance between the two. I’ve got no aspir<strong>at</strong>ions to be the nextChief Executive or D<strong>is</strong>trict Director or anyth<strong>in</strong>g like th<strong>at</strong>. It’s not aboutthe position for me, but the learn<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> I will have done. Th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> moreimportant for me.I hope I will still be liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Adelaide</strong>. I don’t th<strong>in</strong>k I’d be able to cope31
