Seismic Replenishment at Sea (<strong>RAS</strong>) <strong>operations</strong>Course outlineThis course teaches the best practice for safe handling of supportvessels carrying out replenishment at sea for seismic vessels. Overthe course of anything from one to five days – depending on theclient’s requirements – it focuses on practical simulator exercises,and can be tailored to also cover other important elements suchas risk assessment, communication, acceptable conditions, etc.Course descriptionThe training aims to instil best industry practice through a handsonapproach using the National Maritime College of Ireland’s(NMCI) Kongsberg 360° full-mission bridge simulator, one of thefew of its kind in the world. The course can also cover key areasof <strong>RAS</strong> <strong>operations</strong>, such as alongside <strong>operations</strong>, maintenancetowing, line astern refueling and emergency scenarios such asbreakdown towing. A variety of environmental conditions areused in simulations to give participants a realistic training scenario.The course is designed for Masters and Chief Officers of bothsupport and seismic vessels. The number of participants oneach course depends on its duration, in order to ensure thatall participants gain valuable hands-on experience, including adeeper understanding of:• safe maneuvering using ship’s engines and helm;• natural forces (wind, current, interaction) and their effecton the behavior of ships involved in <strong>RAS</strong> <strong>operations</strong>;• the importance of assessment and planning and the needfor alternative plans;• safe and effective operation management using bridgeresource management tools;• efficient bridge procedure management during <strong>RAS</strong><strong>operations</strong>.Who should attend?This course is designed for Masters and Chief Officers of bothsupport and seismic vessels, and for company superintendents.The lecturerCourse developer and lecturerClive Hotham specialises inNavigation as a subject. Hehas been actively involved insimulation, both for the deliveryand the development of courses,at all levels for the past fouryears. Prior to working at NMCI,he was a lecturer at FleetwoodNautical Campus for three and ahalf years.
