Discrim<strong>in</strong>ationAcross <strong>the</strong> Sectors:A Comparison ofDiscrim<strong>in</strong>ation Trends<strong>in</strong> Private and PublicOrganizationsBy Megan K. Leasher, PhD and Corey E. Miller, PhDDifferences and similarities between public and private sectororganizations have been hypo<strong>the</strong>sized and researched for severaldecades. This study <strong>in</strong>vestigated <strong>the</strong> differences <strong>in</strong> claims ofemployment discrim<strong>in</strong>ation reported for employees with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> privateand public sectors. A longitud<strong>in</strong>al database of statewide discrim<strong>in</strong>ationclaims was analyzed to determ<strong>in</strong>e if differences <strong>in</strong> employmentdiscrim<strong>in</strong>ation patterns or levels exist between <strong>the</strong> sectors. Theoreticaland practical implications are presented <strong>in</strong> addition to propositions forfuture research.

Perry, PhDWe <strong>in</strong>vestigate <strong>the</strong> relationships between two work-related attitudes (<strong>the</strong>love of money and leisure ethic) and affective, cont<strong>in</strong>uance, andnormative occupational commitment controll<strong>in</strong>g gender, organizationaltenure, and career tenure and test <strong>the</strong> model across Baby Boomers andGen-Xers <strong>in</strong> a multi-group analysis. We collected data from a stratifiedrandom sample of <strong>the</strong> National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA)<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA (N = 397). Results suggested that leisure ethic waspositively related to affective commitment for Baby Boomers, whereas<strong>the</strong> love of money was negatively related to affective commitment forGen-Xers. Career tenure was positively related to all three componentsof occupational commitment for both age cohorts. Gender (male) waspositively related to love of money and negatively related to leisureethic for Gen-Xers, but not for Baby Boomers. Fur<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> love of moneywas negatively related to affective commitment for male Gen-Xers, butnot for female Gen-Xers. Driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> transformatory agenda isdependent upon a stable, reliable and competent Senior ManagementService (SMS). However, <strong>the</strong> SMS is currently confronted with humanresource challenges, such as staff capacity, strategic cross-cutt<strong>in</strong>gissues, and staff turnover. Regular summits lead by <strong>the</strong> Public ServiceCommission (PSC) and Department of Public Service andAdm<strong>in</strong>istration (DPSA) with civil society and labor union <strong>in</strong>volvement,can effectively contribute to ensur<strong>in</strong>g that human resource challengesare adequately dealt with.
