Promising Signs for the Waves! On Saturday 27 August, Waverley Collegeand Cranbrook hosted the Invitational Trackand Field Carnival at ES Marks Field. Ourstudents competed against students fromCranbrook, Shore, St Andrew’s, Kings,Riverview, St Patrick’s, St Pius and StAugustine’s.This meeting provided our students withan opportunity to compete with some ofthe strong GPS schools. The results wereextremely encouraging and with two crucialweeks before the CAS Championships, thereis already positive ‘buzz’ running through theteam.Performances to highlight from the track camefrom Brendan Madeira, David Buckland, FinnMergler, Jaya Yoannidis and Rami Alassmi. Our men in the field also showed plenty ofstrength and determination. Performances tohighlight came from Benjamin Gan, MichaelBoatswain, Adi Barisic, Arthur McKenna,Kordell Payne and Elliot Doughty. The carnival would not have been possiblewithout the fantastic support from parents, friends and members of the Waverley Collegestaff.A big, “Thank You”, must go to all parents whokindly helped out (and offered to help) with thevarious jobs at the track. It was wonderful tosee the supportive community, that WaverleyCollege is so famous for, is alive andflourishing. This weekend the Waverley College teamwill be back at ES Marks for the SydneyBoys High and Sydney Grammar InvitationalCarnival. Waverley will be the only CASschool in attendance, with a majority of theopposition coming from the GPS competition. This will definitely be an event worth watching.Next Wednesday night (7 September, 2011)the Track and Field Supporters Club will behaving a meeting in the Br Skehan Room(near Mrs Brisby’s) in preparation for the CASweek. The meeting will commence at 7pm.All parents/friends wishing to help out duringCAS week, as well as in Season 2012, arewelcome to attend.WAVERLEY TO WIN!John McCoyMIC Track and FieldChecking the Political Geography in CanberraWaverley College Year 10 Elective Geographystudents studying Political Geographytravelled to Canberra recently to experiencefirst hand the current political landscape amidrobust debate on several issues. The visit coincided with the first day of theSpring Parliamentary Sitting and two protestgroups presenting their points of view on theCarbon Tax and Gay Marriage. While students did not participate in eitherforum, the experience of our nationaldemocratic rights to present a point of viewwas on display in an example that the voice ofthe people can, and will be heard. Agree ordisagree with the points of view, democracyas evidenced, is alive and well in Canberra. What the students did experience wasParliamentary Question Time and vigorouspresentations from both the Government andOpposition parties.Thereafter, the students had a meetingwith the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, anddespite his hectic schedule, Mr Turnbullgraciously gave nearly forty minutes ofhis time, held in the Liberal Party meetingroom. Mr Turnbull answered student’squestions, giving an overview of AustralianPolitics, with considerations of local issues(Waverley College being within the Wentworthelectorate) as well as his role as ShadowMinister for Communication and Broadband. Some international issues were discussedalong with matters relating to education.Other highlights from the Waverley CollegeYear 10 Geography two day field trip toCanberra were visits to the British HighCommission, the Delegation of the EuropeanUnion, the Australian National Universityand the Department of Foreign Affairs andTrade. All visits involved presentations ofan extremely high standard by professionalsin their respective fields relating to PoliticalGeography. The study of Political Geography camealive over the two days, where studentsrepresented Waverley College with thoughtful, engaging questions and came away withgreater insights connecting them to our nationand our relationships to other nation states.Brad Thompson, HSIE - Geography Dept.Volume 35 No.25 • 2 SEPTEMBER 2011 page 5Track and FieldUpcoming Events• Saturday 3 SeptemberTrack & FieldInvitational, E S Marks• Wednesday 7 SeptemberTrack & FieldSupporters Club AGM,Skehan Room 7pm• Saturday 10 SeptemberTrack & FieldInvitational, E S Marks• Tuesday 13 SeptemberCARBO NIGHTCollege Hall 5:30pm• Wednesday 14 SeptemberCollege Assembly -Presentation ofTrack & Field Team• Thursday 15 September82nd CAS Track &Field Championships,Homebush• Friday 16 SeptemberTrack & Field Dinnerand Presentation Night,College Hall 6pmBelow, Waverley Studentsmeet with the Hon MalcolmTurnbull MP, Member forWentworth and ShadowMinister for Communication &Broadband.
