Evolution of Modified Bitumen ApplicationHot mopping of built-up roof (BUR) felts has been around since the 1800s.Modified Bitumen membranes were introduced in the 1960s. The first SBSsheets were installed with hot mop application. The APP sheets wereinstalled with torch application only. As the products were improved, newapplication techniques were developed. Cold process adhesives wereintroduced by the coating industry in the 1970s. Self-adhered membraneswere introduced by the roofing industry in the late 1990s.
